As always, I appreciate your thoughtful and well informed reply to my somewhat emotional reflection on the election. "kakki" wrote: > Everything I've read says the majority in Alaska want > the oil business to > provide jobs and improve their economy. Was there this > kind of opposition > when the Alaska pipeline was built back in the 60s-70s? I'm not surprised that this is favored by those who want to reap the economic advantages of such drilling. And, yes, there was this type of opposition, actually more, before the pipeline was built. Kakki said: > I know, I know, we all read different takes on it. Yes, that's true. And, of course, there are various ways to measure the ecological impact. My concern is with the local impact but also with any unforseen repercussion that are more far reaching. I said: > > It's all about oil. Iraq. Alaska. You put an oil man in> the White House and that's what you get. Kakki said: > This makes me want to scream every time I read it. I stand by my statement, although I realize it's a generalization. As for whether it was about oil when Bill Clinton bombed Iraq in the 90s, I'd say yes. There are large areas of this world where human rights violations abound as much as or more than in the Middle East, yet that is the area under our scrutiny. If there was oil under Africa, we'd be focused there. There's no oil under North Korea. Hence, the "standard" is not the same. > If, for some reason we "took over" Iraq just to get the oil, the truth is we would have far better access to the reserves there and could bring in a much higher technology to process it, thereby raising competition which would LOWER the price of oil to the entire world and LOWER the profits the oil companies make from it? That's an interesting way to look at it, but I don't think it's that simple. From what I know of Dick Cheney's oil interests, for example, the "pipeline" to and from Iraq is more convaluted. It's not a straight transaction. I believe that this is about keeping the "pipeline" to Iraq and the Middle East open and accessible. >I am not at all enthusiastic about a war in Iraq, but this "it's all about oil" thing drives me crazy. I really don't mean to drive you crazy, Kakki. I think we've talked enough in person that you know I mean that sincerely. We just disagree in our points of view on this one. > It defies the facts as I know them, is way too pat, and seems to be just a mantra for singling out that "big bad Bush oil family." Well, it's is a mantra I sing. I don't believe the Bush family is acting with honest intelligence in the best interests of the American people or the American founding principles. > I have been involved with three environmental land conservation foundations. In all three it was "evil rich Republicans" who gave tens of millions to sustain the organizations and to buy the land up for preservation. On this I think we pretty much agree. Individual Republicans have certainly been environmentally friendly. I just don't believe it's ever been a plank of the party platform. > If you have X amount of money for the environment, where would you have it go - to new technology that will help eliminate it or to using government money to buy up any open space just because the neighbors want their property values to increase, as is often the case here in California. Good question. What I would do is provide tax incentives to people to buy hybrid or electric cars. For example, I'd allow an individual to deduct the percentage of the purchase price of a hybrid car that reflects the percentage that runs on electricity. (You'd only get the deduction once every 5 years or so. You couldn't buy a new car every year and get the deduction. That defeats the purpose.) As always, you raise good points to ponder. Clearly, I don't have all the answers. If I did, I'd be president or something... lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 08:15:26 -0800 (PST) From: paul mccloud Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2002 #467 on voting : i voted for clinton because bush sr helped saddam in 80s even when he gassed the kurds,, then i thought clinton and reno were swine so i voted for dole, of all people ,.. maybe thats sick but clinton bombed serb civilians with cluster bombs , so how nice is he ? he was nuts i think.. now bush jr wants to get rid of saddam . so he seems the oppisite of bush sr. well this time i voted all democrat except for one local republican the republicans support for death penalty is stupid because it just increases crime i think,, they tell us to be alert now that theyll execute the pakistani -- yeah they know it increases crime yet it continues -- how stupid maybe perot would be ok.. or senator nighthorse campbell an indian republican- native american - --- JMDL Digest wrote: > > JMDL Digest Thursday, November 7 2002 > Volume 2002 : Number 467 > > > > The Official Joni Mitchell Homepage, created by > Wally Breese, can be > found at http://www.jonimitchell.com. I think > we've talked enough in person that you know I mean that > sincerely. We just disagree in our points of view on > this one. I didn't mean to single you out at all Anne, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. I've heard "it's all about oil" with the Bushes for years from all over the place! Maybe it is "all about oil" as far as the oil being an important part of the region and most of the world depends on getting access to it in the middle east, but the whole situation goes back way before the Bushes and before U.S. involvement. I just can't get my head around thinking it all somehow started with the Bushes or that they somehow orchestrate all the middle east oil transactions. The Bushes and Cheney have spent most of their careers in public service, not the oil business. Halliburton is a large construction company, kind of like Fluor Daniel. They are involved in projects all over the world, not just the oil sector. I've looked at Bush I's and Cheney's bios - they are not what I would characaterize as oil men. > Well, it's is a mantra I sing. I don't believe the Bush > family is acting with honest intelligence in the best > interests of the American people or the American > founding principles. I essentially don't think the US should be involved in any other countries. I'm philosophically a non-interventionist. I only think we should intervene out of direct self-defense. That is the question for me here - one that has not been completely answered. I'm personally too worried about our safety to just write it off as being all about oil, though. Thanks for your reply, Anne. It's good to hear from you! So I looked at those pages a little further and noticed that the actual sound files are located at http://feature.atlrec.com/buzztone/joni_mitchell/ You will find that you can even look at the contents of the whole directory which is unprofessional but very handy in this case. It contains the files amelie.swf [sic!] borderline.swf cherokee.swf chinesecafe.swf circlegame.swf dawntreader.swf hejira.swf lasttime.swf love.swf otisandmarlena.swf refugeofroads.swf slouchingtowards.swf woodstock.swf youdream.swf You can simply save them to your hard disk by right-clicking the files with your mouse and choose "save as...". To play them on your computer you can drag and drop them into your browser window - the browser needs to have the Flash-plugin installed. The files contain audio only - there is no visual content. I get the distinct impression that Letterman is a huge music fan. For the MOST part the very artists he chooses, shows me he has a respect for good music. However, it is pretty customary to put musical acts on last, on most talk shows. I seem to recall a time, quite awhile back when his musical acts where the middle act. He may also put them on last so you know what time to tune in, and you don't have to waste your time listening to that dim witted actress! Plus let's face it Dave is a bit of a nerd and musicians probably intimidate the hell out him with their coolness - especially Joni!
