Excerpt from the Inaugural Address of the President of the Republic of Costa Rica: "We will compete without destroying Nature because, beyond the events of the moment, our rich bio-diversity will always be a great wealth and we will preserve it. Before becoming an oil enclave, before becoming a land of open pit mining, I plan to initiate a sustained effort to transform Costa Rica into an ecological power. I think it could be more minimal in its arrangement--maybe just with strings or a quartet with some reeds for decoration. What really bugs me is this: what purpose does the light percussion serve? Why have that faint high-hat tapping out the beat and the delicate brush of the snare drum? One of the things that is so inspired on the Hejira version is that this song which has the theme of flight, has an arrangement that soars as well, with instruments that provide space and air--the icy vibes, the slide guitar and the rumbling of joni's guitar seem to echo the sense of flight! Add to that, the odd measure of 3/4 time to punctuate the 4/4 further provides a rootless quality. If I'm not mistaken, there's no percussion whatsoever in the Hejira version, and the inclusion of it in this new version takes the tone poem quality of the work and attempts to put it into a traditional song format. And the plodding tempo adds to the frustration for me on a tune that should float. Don't get me wrong--I adore Joni and I'm sure I will listen to this new work over and over. But I feel about this arrangement the way I felt about the muddy VG8 on TTT--it could be so much better. My guess is that the tunes that are going to fare the best on this outing are the Wild Things Run Fast offerings. It seems the biggest loser in yesterday's > election was the state of Alaska. There'll be tons o' > drilling there for sure. Everything I've read says the majority in Alaska want the oil business to provide jobs and improve their economy. Was there this kind of opposition when the Alaska pipeline was built back in the 60s-70s? Everything I've read says there will be little ecological impact - and that there was little ecological impact from the previous drilling there. I know, I know, we all read different takes on it. > It's all about oil. Iraq. Alaska. You put an oil man in > the White House and that's what you get. This makes me want to scream every time I read it. Was it all about oil when Clinton bombed Iraq during the 90s? Are the longstanding UN sanctions on Iraq all about oil? What about the fact that the US can get oil from a number of other sources than Iraq and has done so for years now? What about the fact that Europe and Asia are the biggest consumers of oil from Iraq? What about the fact that the largest oil companies in the world area British and Dutch? If, for some reason we "took over" Iraq just to get the oil, the truth is we would have far better access to the reserves there and could bring in a much higher technology to process it, thereby raising competition which would LOWER the price of oil to the entire world and LOWER the profits the oil companies make from it? I am not at all enthusiastic about a war in Iraq, but this "it's all about oil" thing drives me crazy. It defies the facts as I know them, is way too pat, and seems to be just a mantra for singling out that "big bad Bush oil family." > A personal aside. When I spent a few years lobbying for > funding to clean up a local pond, the Republican city > councilor was the biggest and most active supporter of > the effort. So, I guess you can't generalize. (although > it seems that overall the Republican party is not as > environmentally friendly as the Democratic party.) I have been involved with three environmental land conservation foundations. In all three it was "evil rich Republicans" who gave tens of millions to sustain the organizations and to buy the land up for preservation. > When will people figure out that it's worse to wake up > in the morning and say "Sh*t, I have no planet" than to > say "Sh*t, I have no job."? Preserving land is a good thing within reason. Far more important is controlling and working toward eliminating pollution of our air and water. If you have X amount of money for the environment, where would you have it go - to new technology that will help eliminate it or to using government money to buy up any open space just because the neighbors want their property values to increase, as is often the case here in California. They held up a much needed freeway here for years, wasting millions, based on saving part of some bird's habitat. What is worse - the bird losing some habitat or people in their cars idling on clogged highways and freeways for hours every day adding grossly to the air pollution? I tried to find this "20% of the electorate voted for GOP" on the Moveon site but couldn't locate it. Was this a email that went out to subscribers? I am also on a political email list and read all day yesterday of record turn-out all over the U.S. Where I voted there was 4 times the usual number of people and a long wait for the voting booth. I would think that anyone (who wasn't incapacitated or otherswise prevented from voting) who did not vote yesterday must not really care that much one way or another. It may not be a mandate or a referendum for Bush, but there has to be some kind of message in there, don't you think? This was an historic win for Republicans and they astonishingly won in several longstanding Democratic party regional strongholds. I know some of you may hate to hear it but I have 20 friends and co-workers (all female and all but one Hispanic or African American) who have switched from lifelong Dems to Repubs. since November 2000. I think it's as simple as the fact that the economy is in the crapper and people want change, so they voted for change. I don't think it's a mandate for Bush or Republicans per se. Nor do I think the new regime is going to turn the world around or upside down as some of the others do. The vote comes up again in 2004 - how much can get done in two years? Not a lot. And then what will happen? People will vote for change again, and there ya' go. I voted for some Repubs and some Dems...I tried to vote for the person and not the party, I don't think this generalization stuff does anybody any good - - like Joni says, it just creates a borderline. I think it's about more than the economy but generally agree with the rest of what you say. That's why I think people on the losing side shouldn't get so worked up about it. > I voted for some Repubs and some Dems...I tried to vote for the person and > not the party, I don't think this generalization stuff does anybody any good > - like Joni says, it just creates a borderline. Mark E in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 00:57:40 -0500 From: "William Chavez" Subject: Song lists-comments NJC It would be too difficult for me to list all time favorites. I don't know how you guys are doing it. I will comment on the selections mentioned by other people that sent chills up my spine when I read them. K.D Lang-"My Old Addiction". This is such an incredible centerpiece for that whole album. The CD format has really changed the way artist present the whole concept of a concept album. The album "DRAG" is definitely a concept album. Now that we no longer have to flip over the LP, we are seeing a lot of CDs with a track somewhere in the middle that is usually a ballad, kind of of lengthy and a power house when it comes to emotional impact. This song and the way it was positioned on that album is a good example of a "centerpiece". I highly recommend this album. She does the only version of "Air that I Breath" that I haven't gotten sick of. Judy's version was tops until KD put hers out. Now I can't stand Judy's version. What about the first and last songs on Drag. What a way to open and close an album. She approached these songs as if they were classic standard and gives them very careful treatments. Had Joni done this with BSN, I think more people would have like it more without the usual "heavy orchestration" complaint that everybody likes to give it. I was very pleased with BSN though. Billy Holiday-"I'll Be Seeing You". This is great but really MOST everything she has ever done is classic and high on the emotional factor!! "Don't Explain, Travelin' Light", etc.......................... FMac(S.Nicks)"Sara" Classic soft rock. Full of that personalized mythological language that very few people can understand. I think that is one of the reasons why people are sooo attracted to people like Nicks and Tori Amos. Your never really sure that you have the whole picture within your grasp. Liza is a great vocalist though I'm not sure I identify closely with any one of her interpretations. Julie Andrews-This woman is CLASSIC. Everything she sang on that movie was sung with soooooooo much passion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!She made it believable. PP& Mary-"Day is Done" Great! What about "500 miles" and "Any Day Know". Here you have a woman with a fair voice, at best, yet she can nail a song. J Airplane- I'm a big fan. She also cut this("Somebody to Love") with her prior band called the Great Society. This was also a very good version but not as good as the one you are probably thinking of. She also did "White Rabbit" with this band with a very long recorder(flute like instrument) solo. L. Ronstadt-"Prisoner..." is good but I think "Silver Blue" is the real magical cut on this album along with her definitive rendition of Dolly's "I Will Always Love You". FMac(S.Nicks)-"Landslide" To me this song should be a bigger anthem than "Blowin' in the Wind". Rates extremely high in significance category. Even if everything else she's written were considered garbage just this song alone would have made her significant. I think Stevie is great! There is a great live version on the Fleetwood Mac Live double album(1980) where she changes up the melody a little. This usually spell disaster when you attempt this with a classic, but God does this version ever work! It is the most emotional version I have ever heard and it still stands up as her best 20 years later. Joni-"A Case of You" Could any rendition of this song ever be labeled horrible? It would be very difficult to destroy the beauty of this song,. Just mouthing the words would probably do. J.T.-Fire & Rain- Great choice. Taylor has come close a few times to the excellence of this song but I don't know that he could ever write anything that will top this. All Along the Watch Tower- I actually saw a classical guitarist from Rhode Island break up his classical set and just burst into this song. I remember it being better than Jimmy's. Jimmy's version is tops as far as recorded version go. U2-"Pride" is great on record and mega great live. I would have to break out a couple of LPs to comment on the Karen Carpenter tune. Can't remember it off the top of my head. Doris Day-I don't remember "Secret Love" but I know she does the best version of "Love Me or Leave Me" I have ever heard. She is also very good in the movie of the same title despite the fact that she spends half the time crying. Roberta Flack-"Do what you gotta do" Great and everything else on that album is great too. Reverend Lee is reeeeaaaal spicy. Her first two album are great but I think I like 'Chapter Two' better than 'First Take'. Mary Tyler Moore theme song should be released as a video! The beginning part and the little instrumental of the same song at the end. I loved Mary. I think even women were in love with Mary. The water goes down the drain and back into the water supply, doesn't it? Or am I missing something here? It's not like you're pouring toxic waste into it or urinating in it before it goes down the drain. It's not like you used it to scrub your toilet or rinse out the cat box. So there's a little ketchup in it? Is that gonna hurt anybody? Since when did a little ketchup ever hurt anybody? Well, maybe on scrambled eggs, but just a little watered down ketchup going down the drain? Come on!
