If you disagree, feel free to delete now, with my apologies. I saw Bob in Chicago last night, as a surprising empty Allstate Arena (by empty, I mean it was only 80-85% sold out). If you haven't seen Bob perform in a while, and you consider yourself even a minor fan, do yourself a favor, and get tickets the next time he comes around in your area. I can't imagine you being disappointed. If seen him numerous times in the last couple of years, and he seems to really be enjoying himself. His set list is pretty much top drawer from start to finish, and covers the gambit from a strikingly beautiful acoustic version of Masters of War, to a rambunctious cover of Brown Sugar. His version of Niel Young's Old Man was a revelation, and coming from someone of Bob's age, it put a new twist on the song - instead of plea to the Old Man to recall what he was like in his youth, it had the air of a confessional, that even though he couldn't relate to his Old Man while growing up, now that he is there himself, he isn't all that different. "Old Man take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you". Definite goose bump material. As a man in upper 40's who never got along with his father, this definitely hit home. Other highlights for me were a blistering, Slow Train Coming sort of take on the new High-Water (For Charley Patton), an amazing version of Just Like a Woman, a storming All Along the Watchtower, and two beautiful covers of Warren Zevon songs (Accidentally Like a Martyr and Mutineer). Oh yeah, and a killer version of Things Have Changed. My only complaint is about Bob's new found fondness for playing the keyboard. While it served High-Water extremely well, for the most part, the songs he played guitar on seemed to kick it up a notch. But hey, if playing the keyboards is giving him pleasure, what the hell. Anyway - if you have the chance, go see him. I can't imagine you walking away disappointed that you did. The only thing I have to add is that even though the death tax won't be on a ballot anywhere, it's definitely being used as a campaign tool to again say that the Republicans will reduce taxes. That's extremely deceptive since very few voters will benefit by that tax break. In case anyone's interested in another view of taxes, including the death tax, and the widening "prosperity" gap in this country, there's info at http://www.responsiblewealth.org/tax_fairness/index.html, including info about small businesses and farms, issues which were brought up here. If people think their taxes are high now, wait until the shortfall from the tax rebate Bush insists on continuing needs to be made up. Especially after the painful cuts in social services in order to get a balanced budget during Clinton's years, it's a horror that this country is already in such financial trouble, and it's not just because of the war. So guess who's going to be paying more taxes soon? It won't be the wealthy. They may pay a larger dollar amount but it's usually a much smaller PERCENTAGE of their earnings than middle-class people pay, and the Republicans would like that percentage to be even smaller. Why hard working, sometimes paycheck-to-paycheck, people think the Republicans are on their side when it comes to taxes is a mystery to me. It's one of those myths that the Republicans keep exploiting. Believe me, there are plenty of ways for wealthy people to avoid paying taxes. Hard working people do not need to worry about that. There are major differences between the parties this time, just as there were for the 2000 elections. There are some similarities, especially in the getting enough money for campaigns and then being beholden to special interests, but to say there are no differences in philosophy, and how that philosophy is expressed, is not accurate. The current Republicans' agenda is very conservative, and things such as faith-based social services (one of Bush's first acts was to establish a new agency to oversee that--repugnant idea that government and religious organizations would be so entwined); the attempt to abolish abortion (and Bush's nominees for judges shows how active that is); the willingness to let business do anything (any surprise there's no longer any money in the budget for lawsuits against tobacco companies?), are just some of the ways that the conservative agenda is being played out. And Bush would like all that played out without being bothered by any Democratic disagreement and having to compromise. More than ever before, loyalty to the Republican party is demanded, and any Republican who does not toe the party line is punished, which is one of the reasons Senator Jeffords left the party. So, it has become a numbers game. A moderate Republican (and partisan as I am, I know and appreciate that such beings exist) would have a hard time voting their conscience if it did not match what Bush wanted. Anyway, that's all I have to say about politics, except vote vote vote on Tuesday. Yes, as many times as you can, and all for the Democratic candidates (yeah, just some wishful thinking on my part). The one good thing if Congress ends up controlled by Republicans after this election is that the country will fall apart that much faster, so everyone will be ready for a new president in 2004. The current fiscal "policy" has us halfway there already. And, maybe even more important than all that because it's soothing to think of beauty continuing no matter what happens on election day, after reading so many recent comments about Judy Collins I found the cds of hers that I have and thoroughly enjoyed listening to them again this afternoon. "Wildflowers" was one of my first albums, but after I discovered Joni I didn't pay a lot of attention anymore to Judy. I bought the cds I have, "Trust Your Heart" and "Sanity and Grace", years ago based only on the titles but never listened to them a lot, mostly because I didn't like the 80s style production. After reading the comments here, I'm going to get some of her earlier albums, where her voice is deeper and the production sound is clearer. I especially liked the comment (and, sorry, I forget now who made it) about listening to "early Judy" early in the morning, wonderful idea to start the day with such clarity and beauty!! And Will, what a moving story you told about Judy's emotional purging during that concert. That must have been wonderful to experience such an open heart. According to the Congressional Budget Office the top 1% of taxpayers pay the highest total effective federal tax rate (percentage) among all groups: http://www.cbo.gov/showdoc.cfm?index=3089&sequence=11 And it has been that way for every year that is listed (since 1979). The only tax which that groups pays a lower rate is "social insurance" or payroll tax. The top 1% has paid in the neighborhood of 2% while most everyone else pays around 9%. Is there some analysis I'm missing here or some source that states otherwise? The following is an article about Tori Amos' new album, "Scarlet's Walk." I have never paid any attention to Tori, but the concept for this new work intrigues me. Has anyone heard it yet? What do you think? I found the article at: << http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/usatoday/20021031/en_usatoday/4 580229 >> The Joni content is in the final paragraph. Amos' 'Walk' goes in search of America's soul Thu Oct 31, 8:42 AM ET Elysa Gardner USA TODAY NEW YORK While touring over the past year, Tori Amos met many fans who were eager to talk. But one encounter made a particularly deep impression on the singer. ''There was this Native American woman,'' Amos recalls. ''She was older, and she hadn't come to hear the music -- she could have cared less. She just sat down and said, 'I have a message for you.' And do you know what she said?'' Amos leans forward on her sofa and lowers her voice slightly, as if to relay an important secret. ''She said, 'The white brother took the land, but unfortunately, that's all he took. It's time that he takes more.' She was saying, in essence, that those who own the land and those who hold it are two different entities, and that it's time they came together.'' Such theories and observations informed Amos' new CD, Scarlet's Walk, which arrived Tuesday. The singer/songwriter describes the album, her first collection of new material since 1999's To Venus and Back, as a sort of musical search for America's soul. The 18 tracks take a mysterious figure named Scarlet -- more about her shortly -- from coast to coast. Her journey invites listeners to reflect on events ranging from Sept. 11 to the forced Native American migration of the Trail of Tears, which directly affected the Eastern Cherokee family of Amos' mother. (The CD also allows access to ''Scarlet's Web,'' a feature on Amos' Web site including maps that offer more specific insights into the songs via photos, commentary and behind-the-scenes video footage.) Being a Tori Amos project, of course, Scarlet's Walk is considerably quirkier in its use of imagery and metaphor than your average historical essay. Scarlet may be a person or a symbol of something bigger. Amos chose the name partly to suggest a thread running through the story, ''because scarlet was actually a fabric before it was a color.'' ''Scarlet is my character in the story,'' Amos explains. ''She starts off going to see a friend who's a fading porn star, Amber Waves'' -- also the name of Julianne Moore (news)'s porn-star character in the film Boogie Nights, Amos points out. ''I go to L.A., to the other side of the 405 (freeway), where all the cheesy porn movies are made. I know there are great ones, but I'm not talking about the great ones. Poor Amber.'' From there, Scarlet embarks on an adventure that eventually finds her on a plane heading from Boston to New York. ''And another woman gets on another plane, but her plane doesn't make it down. Then my character feels what she felt before she died.'' Amos says she came up with the plane-crash scenario before 9/11, ''but I didn't know what it meant. I didn't know what some other references I was coming up with meant, either.'' When the tragedy occurred, Amos was in New York, preparing for a TV appearance. She was about to release a compilation of cover songs called Strange Little Girls and begin a tour. ''We started getting a lot of e-mails from people asking us not to cancel, because everyone was canceling shows, and people felt they needed a place to congregate, to just be together. ''So we went on the road. It was a time when people were telling us stories - -- in letters, before and after shows. I've never experienced an openness like that, where people needed so much to talk, because nobody knew what tomorrow would bring -- or if there would be a tomorrow. People in different cities responded in different ways, but for once we weren't isolated. After 30 or 40 years of living in a grown-up Disneyland, where we felt no one could hurt us, we were finally experiencing what it's like to be part of the world.'' The experience fueled Amos' eagerness to re-examine her own Native American roots. ''The land has a story here, and it's not about King Arthur,'' says the singer, who now lives in England with her British husband, sound engineer Mark Hawley, and their 2-year-old daughter, Natashya. ''Even though many of us are part European, we have our own rich history and mythology. But we haven't handed it to our students and our children the way other cultures have.'' Amos is encouraged, though, by the rising profile of young female singer/songwriters who also are exploring issues of personal and social relevance. ''The winds are changing,'' she says. ''People want thinkers and poets and songwriters. There's always a place for entertainers -- we all love them. They make us giggle, and they make us want to sing and dance with them, and that's important. But I think we're beginning to get what could be the equivalent of the Laura Nyros and Joni Mitchells and Roberta Flacks of the next guard. If that's starting to happen, it's really good news.'' ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #457 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
