I think she is trashing a generalized way of thinking by Americans that might make low voiced women seem like lesbians. She is obviously against this way of thinking from what I read. There is no doubt that Joni's voice has been lowered by her smoking and I doubt she would deny that, but she probably wouldn't exchange her current deeper register for her earlier higher one for nothing!!! While her earlier voice was beautiful her deeper register is so much more useful as an interpretive vehicle for her complicated songs. It definitely sounds MORE womanly and MORE sexy (anybody remembers Odetta?). Even in the early seventies she was mentioning the fact that she was able to sing lower and wanted to SLOWLY explore this part of her vocal range that most people were not familiar with. One thing, he something doesn't blatantly make a statement one way or another, I don't know that I would get too worked up about it. Joni did play at a well known lesbian festival in Michigan(NO MEN ALLOWED). I doubt she would have done that if she had something against lesbians or body hair on women. My family is from Spain and let me tell you I have never seen so many smoker then on the streets of Madrid. Men and women! They are all walking around the city very quickly and with a cigarette in hand. I always thought that cig smoking and exercising has got to be such a horrible combination for your health. I bet that smoke really gets down there. Most Americans don't walk while they smoke, it is my observation that Americans like to sit while smoking. Americans live a life that is way more hectic than Europeans and I think that is where that whole cigarette break comes in. I think Americans associate it more with relaxing. Men and women! Omn our recent drive thru Europe(France, Spain, Switzerland, Germnay, Holland and Belgium) we were surprised at how civilised it still was. People smoked everywhere! And dogs (in France) were even in the fanciest restaurants, and we had no trouble keeping the dog we collected in the motels either. And children were treated with respect. Again, the bargain bin. 99 cents a piece. Linda Ronstadt-Lush Life Interesting that I found this one after the talk about it the past few weeks. Listened to one side on the way home. Not good. She seemed to hit all of the notes perfectly but so bland. Seemed to be pretty emotionless. Give me "Willing", "You Won't Matter Anymore", and "Tracks of My Tears" anyday. Couldn't bear to listen to anymore of it. Linda Ronstadt-Get Closer Haven't tried this one yet. Hall and Oates-Private Eyes. Big, big fan but this album seems pretty commercial. Haven't got to it yet either. Diana Ross-Ross Pretty lightweight and not great but not too bad. Good music to have on when you are not really listening. Nevertheless, what a waste of a great voice. Carole King-One to One Carole, Carole, Carole. Darn, after Tapestry, Fantasy, and Music how can she record these terrible tunes. Couldn't past half of it either. Aretha Franklin-Aretha Haven't got to this one. Just saw on t.v. that one of her houses burnt down. Not good news. Glad she wasn't there. Aretha-What You See Is What You Sweat Got through half of this one and it is was great. Looking forward to the other half. Her duet with M. Mcdonald is beautiful and he is so fine on this recording. Best of Motown 7 Can there be a bad Motown compilation? This one features Ross on "Touch Me in the Morning." Damn, what a tune. One of my all time favorites. Here is the kicker and the jewel of my search. I got another Joni album. About to put it on. So excited. Got it for $3.99. As I mentioned I also bought Dog Eat Dog on eBay last week as well as Mingus. Haven't received them yet. Didn't know what this one was til I took it out of the bag just now. It is "Song to a Seagull." Couldn't tell at the store because they had one of their anti theft devices on it. Couldn't read the names of the tunes nor the name of the album. I tore off the scanning tag trying to find out what it was. The clerk looked at me with irritated consternation as I whistled lightly (and looked away) and pretended that I wasn't paying attention to what he was doing. Ooops. Here goes. Yipppee!!!!! p.s. the artwork on this cd is absolutely beautiful. I'm running behind the times as usual, and for all I know this has been discussed already, but tonight I finally had time to sit down and read the Rolling Stone women issue. Now don't kill me, but if I have to hear one more time about how screwed over Joni has been by the business, I'm going to poke my eyes out. I wish she'd quit talking about it every interview -- it's either that, or something about how dismal today's music is. It just makes me cringe, because in every article, she's coming across as bitter and cold, with none of the witty, kind Joan we all know and love. And, all in all, considering that it has been a good 25 years since she had an album that turned a profit, she's doing pretty good -- LOL, I don't mean this to sound snotty as it sounds -- I'm just saying that I've noticed since at least TI that most articles are focused on her negativity, and it irks me. Anyway, that's my rant for the night.
