I am awaiting that CD like a pregnant mother who refuses to now what sex her child is until it is born! I will tell you that it is great to here all of you speculate on every little nano sized detail. Faith Hill's voice is noticeably weak during live performances. The Divas show comes to mind. You could barely hear her and she was straining for a sound to come out. These are the not so pretty paybacks of having your voice abnormally amplified in the studio setting. "Hunter or Good Samaritan" As far as guitar tuning and hand positioning for chords, they are identical pieces. It's just that she switches the location of her capo. I use to know the capo locations but have not physically played either song on my guitar in a long time. I'm a proud owner of 2 of those bootleg LPs that had the song listed as the "Good Samaritan". The LP was called Lennie and Dom Songs I think. I have always wondered about that LP title. Anybody know the meaning? Both copies have a blue line drawing of what must have been a picture of a Joni like girl laying down in a grassy field. Maybe it was Joni herself? There are numerous pictures of her doing similar poses when she lived in Laurel Canyon but I've never seen the actual picture this could have been lifted off of. I have not played those boots in over 20 years! That reminds me of something I have to do... Will _________________________________________________________________ Surf the Web without missing calls! It's the first I've heard it mentioned too and, of course, it would be surprising if Balinese people *hadn't* been killed as well, just going by the odds. I haven't been following the stories closely though. I think people have a tendency of dissociating themselves from that sort of thing - is it a form of sociopathy, or is it self-defense (maybe it's the same thing). Sometimes the numbers and the situations are so overwhelming. You read of floods and earthquakes in Asia or the middle east where hundreds, even thousands, of people are killed and it's too mind-numbing to think about. Not just the numbers of people, but the forces of nature that most of us know nothing about in our part of the world. When it strikes closer to home, most people pay more attention because, wow, maybe it *could* happen here after all. I don't know about people in other parts of the world, but I think it's true that westerners, certainly in Canada and the US, tend to take it more personally if it happens to people like us. Which is tragic. I don't know if it's pure selfishness and that we (our media perhaps) tend to dehumanize people who aren't like us, or whether having terrible things happen to people like us makes it somehow *more* tragic for us. It would be interesting to see how stories about tragedies show up in other parts of the world. Reporters here are always looking for the personal angle in order to get readership (the "what's in it for me?" angle). Nevertheless, especially lately it seems, they overdo it on a big scale. They're always analyzing things to death with panels of so-called "experts" spewing off about what this means and what that means, and then regurgitating it and adding comments to the comments. To be honest, I rarely watch TV at all anymore, much less the news. I read the paper on weekends only and I try to read only the first few paragraphs of most stories, just to get the main news without all the trimmings. That's partly because I'm just so busy, and partly because I find there are times I just can't cope with reading more and more about the same damn things and I just can't trust what I read because I don't think there's any such thing as objective news anymore - if there ever was at all; maybe that's a myth too. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: 19 Oct 2002 07:58:33 -0700 From: James Phillips Subject: Joni at Carnegie Hall hello was going thru my digest earlier and noticed someone said something about listening to Joni at Carnegie Hall? Eastern Rain is beautiful and I just discovered that if you play around with that tuning you can also play some great Nick Drake songs (To the Morning, Northern Sky, ). www.jmdl.com/guitar I played a very tentative version of Come to the Sunshine at Jonifest and originally had planned to also play Eastern Rain and another favorite Day After Day (which Marian tabbed). It's a pretty decent boot, but not something originally intended for commercial release. It has Joni's "Get Together" on it if I recall. I believe Lennie & Dom are actually names related to the boot label that put the record out, the company escapes me (it actually might be a reference to the tapers names)...it's the same label that put out the "California" LP as well as "Kept On By Her Own Devices," my fave of the three. -Chris --- Christopher Treacy--- ctreacy1889@earthlink.net--- EarthLink: The #1 provider of the Real Internet. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 23:22:20 -0600 From: Les Irvin Subject: Joni biting the hand Joniphiles - There's a new review up in the Library of a concert in Detroit on 72.02.18: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/720219dn.cfm One paragraph states: "In a new song aimed at jabbing the moguls of the recording industry she states: "I know I'm biting the hand that gives me (material) things." It's either the writer of the article or Joni herself paraphrasing "For the Roses." I guess I seem ungrateful With my teeth sunk in the hand That brings me things I really can't give up just yet But Les, what's a '72.02.18'? I hope it's February 18, 1972! Do I win anything? I have even pleaded and cajoled. But I ain't gonna beg for photos for the Jonifest 2002 page. Sometimes things just don't get done without a deadline, so with that in mind, my deadline for fest photos is Tuesday at midnight (Eastern US time). If I don't have your photo disc by then, or if you haven't uploaded your photos to Chris Marshall's hatstand.com site, they won't be on the Jonifest 2002 page. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. There are many spectacular photographs from this incredible weekend, so the page should be great. It would have been nice to have a few more photographs, but the fest was almost two months ago, so . . . as Janis once said, "That's it!" --Bob ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #435 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
