I've never thought of Miles of Aisles as a driving album, but this sounds so appealing. Maybe it's because I associate this album with wonderful college days in the Berkshires, where spring was always so welcome and beautiful. Or maybe it's the era or the songs or Joni's give-and-take with the enthusiastic audience. Anyway, I am definitely looking forward to doing this. Count me in on the harmonic convergence! I will definitely send out a reminder to the list. As far as winter albums, mine is DJRD, mostly because when it first was released in Chicago it was like 10 below zero. I remember coming home from work, freezing my ass off, turning on the radio, and there was this classical music coming out from the speakers. A little odd for a rock station, but in those days, radio wasn't afraid to play an eclectic mix of musical styles. Anyway, I was only listening half-heartly, when all of a sudden, a very familiar voice joined the mix, at which point I dropped whatever I was doing and sat there in disbelief. I finally had the presence of mind to slap a tape in the old cassette deck, and managed to record the last couple of minutes of Paprica Plans. Once it ended, the DJ announced that that was side three of the new Joni Mitchell album, and to stay tuned as side four was justs minutes away. Needless to say, I kept the tape recorder rolling. I remember sitting on the couch, wrapped in afgan, listening to side 4 for the first time, and forgot all about the horrible weather outside. To this day, whenever the whether is extremely cold, or I've just finished shoveling a ton of snow from the driveway, I slip DJRD on, and I'm immediately transported to a warmer place. This is in today's NYTimes: "In recent weeks, top Indonesian officials who had denied the problem in the past had begun to concede that the world's most-populous Muslim nation faces a terrorist threat. Saturday's attack, in which many of the victims were foreign holidaymakers, seems to mark a turning point." It's this kind of report that makes me think of Indonesia as a "Muslim" country. At least from this article today, the Hindu population on Bali doesn't seem to the be reason for the attack there. This is more from today's article: "Although Indonesia overwhelmingly embraces a moderate form of Islam, radical groups have raised their profile in the last year, exploiting widespread anti-American sentiment as well as divisions within the government. "Some Islamic militants were pressing a theory that the United States had masterminded Saturday's attack as a means to manipulate the Indonesian government and to strengthen its argument for a war against Islam." I've read several news articles today (AP, Reuters) that has Indonesian government sources saying it is Al Qaeda with the help of the local terrorists. That makes more sense than local terrorist groups alone blowing up and murdering tourists and destroying the economy of one of the jewels in Indonesia's crown - unless they want to get a hit in at the Hindu majority there, too. Here is an Associated Press story: Indonesia Blames al-Qaida for Blast Mon Oct 14, 5:03 PM ET By MICHAEL CASEY, Associated Press Writer Indonesia's government, reeling from a bomb attack that killed at least 180 people, acknowledged for the first time Monday that al-Qaida is active on its soil - setting the stage for a possible crackdown on extremists. Stocks plummeted in the capital Jakarta, and markets sank elsewhere in Southeast Asia as tourists fled the country, already one of the region's most fragile economies. But many Americans said they were planning to stay, contrary to State Department advice and despite warnings U.S. interests could be the next targets. The car bomb Saturday at a nightclub packed with foreigners on this resort island is likely to harm more than just the economy and tourism. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, and despite U.S. pressure and the discovery of an al-Qaida-linked terror network in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia, Indonesia has insisted there is no threat of violent extremism on its soil. The turnaround came after a Cabinet meeting in Jakarta Monday, when Defense Minister Matori Abdul Djalil said: "We are sure al-Qaida is here." "The Bali bomb blast is linked to al-Qaida with the cooperation of local terrorists," he said. President Megawati Sukarnoputri is likely to face growing demands to arrest high-profile suspects whose continued freedom has astounded law enforcement officials in other countries. Whether she can do so without provoking extremists - and possible further attacks - is an open question. In Washington, President Bush (news - web sites) had strong words for the Indonesian leader, saying he planned to talk to her about the need to crack down on terrorism. "I hope I hear the resolve of a leader who recognizes that any time terrorists take hold in a country it's going to weaken the country itself," Bush said. "And there has to be a firm and deliberate desire to find out - find the killers before they kill somebody else," he said. Security Minister Bambang Susilo Yudoyono said there were signs terrorists were planning attacks against industrial sites, including ExxonMobil's Arun liquefied natural gas plant in Aceh and the Caltex refinery in Sumatra. "We will increase the security alert in those areas," Yudoyono said. On Bali, there was no visible evidence of a higher security presence or stricter controls at the airport, though police insisted an elite unit had been deployed. The FBI (news - web sites) and Australian detectives joined the hunt for the killers. Investigators from Scotland Yard were on the way, and Germany said it might send experts. Bali police said 27 witnesses had been questioned. Suspicion has fallen on Jemaah Islamiyah, a group that Singapore says is based in Indonesia and is linked to Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s terror network. But the group's leader denied involvement. "All the allegations against me are groundless. I challenge them to prove anything," Abu Bakar Bashir said. "I suspect that the bombing was engineered by the United States and its allies to justify allegations that Indonesia is a base for terrorists." Indonesia has refused to arrest Bashir, saying he has committed no crimes and that an anti-terrorism law has not been passed by Parliament. Underlying the reluctance is a fear that arresting Bashir could provoke a backlash against the nascent democracy in the world's most populous Muslim nation, and that providing the military wider powers to deal with terrorism could herald a return of human rights abuses. Malaysia and Singapore have jailed scores of suspected Jemaah Islamiyah members accused of plotting to bomb the U.S. Embassy and other Western targets. The group has carried out bombings in the Philippines. Jemaah Islamiyah is believed to have four tons of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used to make the Oklahoma City truck bomb, purchased by a suspected Malaysian member who the Malaysian government says allowed two of the Sept. 11 hijackers to use his apartment in 2000. The U.S. Embassy ordered all nonessential staff and dependents to leave Indonesia, and said other Americans in Indonesia should consider leaving. Up to 20,000 Americans are believed to be in Indonesia, although few are permanent residents. Many are employees of U.S. energy companies, which have extensive interests in the resource-rich nation. Foreign countries compiled rising tolls of their citizens killed in the bombings, while volunteers at a hospital-turned-morgue piled ice on bodies and loaded others into refrigerated containers to slow decomposition in the tropical heat. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, whose countrymen are believed to top the death list, arrived on Bali on Monday. The bombings may be the work of al-Qaida and its allies, he said, but he stopped short of calling for Bashir's arrest. "We want the investigation to be concluded successfully ... rather than getting into personal details of groups like Jemaah Islamiyah," Downer said. A pair of explosions, one from a car bomb, tore through a maze of bars, restaurants and nightclubs Saturday night at Kuta Beach, a haunt for surfers and young vacationers. The open-air Sari Club was turned into an inferno. Little remained of it Monday except a huge hole. Government officials said 181 people died, although hospital workers put the total at 190. More than 300 people were injured. Hundreds of wounded Australians were flown home Monday but two died en route. Balinese officials said that only 39 positive identifications had been made - 15 Australians, eight Britons, five Singaporeans, six Indonesians, one German, one French citizen, one Dutch citizen, one New Zealander and one Ecuadorean. Two Americans were killed and four injured, the U.S. State Department said. In London, the government said that at least 30 Britons died. Switzerland believed two of its citizens were among the dead. Bali's international airport was filled with stunned vacationers desperately looking for flights home. But planes also brought people to Bali, including relatives coming to console heartbroken family members and friends and to join the agonizing wait for missing loved ones to be identified. "It's been hell," said David Byron, an Australian. His 14-year-old daughter, Chloe, was with schoolmates when the Sari Club exploded in flames. "But I'm taking her home. I don't care what is left." The normally crowded beaches were largely empty Monday. At sunset, about 300 people, mostly longtime foreign residents, gathered on the beach for a religious ceremony, joined their hands in a circle and prayed. "We all thought Bali was immune and sacred and protected," said an American woman, identifying herself only as Atta, who lost two friends in the attack. "This is the work of outsiders." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 2002 17:36:04 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Bali (njc) > I don't understand this either. The veteran singer/songwriter, on the promotional trail for a new album, says she is "ashamed" to be part of the music business and may stop recording. "I just think it's a cesspool," the 58-year-old folk-rock icon said in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. "I hope it all goes down the crapper. I would never take another deal in the record business, which means I may not record again, or I have to figure out a way to sell over the Net or do something else. But I'll be damned if I'll line their pockets." Oddly, Mitchell just signed a new deal with Nonesuch Records, which will release her new album, "Travelogue" in November. Mitchell was previously based at Reprise Records where her last few albums sold poorly but won several Grammy Awards. Both labels are units of AOL Time Warner Inc (AOL.N). Mitchell also lambasted MTV, complaining that her three-year-old granddaughter is already grabbing her crotch and dancing, imitating the video clips played on the music cable network. "It's tragic what MTV has done to the world," opined Mitchell, who was voted the fifth greatest woman in rock 'n' roll by MTV's sister channel VH1. Both networks are owned by Viacom Inc (VIAb.N) (VIA.N). Once described by her friend David Crosby as being "about as humble as Mussolini," Mitchell has previously described contemporary music as "appallingly sick ... boring chord movement and bad acting." In holding up Bob Dylan and herself as the standard for songwriting, she has written off devotees like Sting, Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow. Mitchell has also previously savaged her former label boss David Geffen for not paying her any royalties, although he has countered that her albums never sold enough copies to cover the advance payments that she received from him. Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Canada, Mitchell has established herself as one of the most respected artists of her generation. Her eclectic career spans 35 years and includes such seminal albums as 1971's autobiographical "Blue" and the 1974 jazz-pop excursion "Court and Spark." She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Since we bag up all those tiny bodies to be used later in a stock, usually done together). However cleaning up after some of Wally's little messes can be a whole nuther extravaganza. Huh?? Love ya girl. You too Wally with all your salacious inyerendos.... In the movie (don't know if this was posted before) there was a dance sequence to Joni's Bothe Sides Now. What is really strange is that it was a orchestra version but did not sound exactly like the BSN album release. Has anyone else seen this and noticed the difference?? I want a copy of this version as it was really cool and very sparse in it's production. Best Paz (still trying to find the words to tell you all about McCartney) Oh Lawd help me! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 00:28:16 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu \(Lama\)" Subject: Cowboy Junkies, Last night in Indianapolis, Indiana; njc Last night's Cowboy Junkies show at Indianapolis, Indiana's Birdy's nightclub was an unusual appearance. Very. My first clue that it was gonna be a weird night was when we stopped for gas. The guy behind the counter was wearing a turban and was arguing Middle Eastern politics with the normally silent bassist, Alan Anton. Alan was so passionate about Pakistani politics, he was like a speed freak. That's different. (He's right about building a coalition- it's the ONLY way.) When we arrived at the venue, there were broken flower vases all OVER the parking lot. Inside the front door, Pete was collect signatures for an anti-war petition. He rewarded each signer with one of Margo's flowers, bowed gracefully, and planted a light kiss on the back of the right hand. The normally refined and gracious Jeff Bird was trying to pick a fight with a bouncer over a parking spot, threatening to never return to "a fascist, rule-based country like Amerika". Strange times. In the end it was the wallflower, the reluctant star, the retiring songwriter who made the whole night. Mike spun amazingly clever and detailed yarns about the inspiration behind each song. At one point, he climbed a light tower and proclaimed, "I'm free! People love me! It really *IS* *OKAY*!!" He was unstoppable but the lack of attention seemed to catapult his sister into a drunken rage. Poor Margo. She was slugging Jack Daniels straight from the bottle most of the night. At one point she pulled "a Joni Mitchell", screaming at the Geese, "You're too RUDE to deserve this music! SHU--UU-UT THE HELL UUU-UUUU-UP!!!!" Ultimately, Mike had to pull her off the front row; she was clawing the face of some pregnant woman wearing Dutch shoes. After that, Management threw them out so we had the meet-and-greet in the parking lot, where it all started. Birdy's sold their equipment from the stage entrance. I got Michael's teal Gretch for $50. You should'a been there. It was a night for the ages. Lamadoo Unless this is a late April Fools's post. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 01:08:06 -0400 From: "William Chavez" Subject: vocal range A severe drop in vocal range is definitely apparent with Joan Baez and I don't think she ever smoked. At least I don't think I've ever seen her with a cig in her hand(on stage or on photographs). I must say that I do not bash smokers but it can alter a singers vocal quality in an unpredictable manner. Sometimes good and sometimes not so good. I do love Joni's voice on Turbulent Indigos and there is not a note in there that doesn't sound "smokie". She is also one of the very few women that actually looks cool on photographs with a cig in her hand. The vast majority of women do NOT! Rickie Lee's 1st album cover came close but I don't think so. I think it came very close to being "right on" because the cover is so "Jonish". The rest of RLJ album is a different story. You guys were discusing her album a few days back and I agree with most of the positive comments. WOW, what an album! There are a few songs on there that not even Joni could improve. RLJ has such an infectious "spunk". "Coolsville" is one of my favorites on there. Will One more thing, Judy Collins once stated that dairy products were bad for singers!?!? I don't think adults should be drinking milk period but why singers? Professional vocalist out there?? Friends who are professional singers tell me that dairy products create extra mucus, which can coat the vocal chords, kinda makes them all gummy. Icky. I take their word for it. Extra mucus can also affect their sinus cavities, which would then effect the sound of their voice. I think that's a concern especially for classical singers who rely on projecting their voice rather than using a microphone to be heard.
