Instead, it was actually a carousel. In infancy, one mounted a galloping pony and started out on a journey during which one assumed that circumstances would change as the expedition continued. But the truth of life was that it was an endless repetition of what one had already experienced...round and round and up and down on that pony. And unless one dealt with whatever challenges one was *meant* to deal with along the route, those challenges appeared again and again in one form or another till the end of one's days. If he hadn't subscribed to that notion before, J.W. Pritchley was a believer now." Is this a worthy entry, Bob? Just because *I* hear Joni as the soundtrack after the hint of a few words doesn't mean it has anything to do with Joni, but I figured I'd check with you anyway. And if it's close but no cigar, I won't pout, promise. (Maybe you need a Joni Influence on Fiction section :-) To redeem myself I'll find my copy of Cortazar's "Manual for Manuel" and send you the Joni bit from that, which you were looking for last time I checked the Joni in Fiction section. It's in a box somewhere... As an aside to anyone looking for a good book to read, I've read most of Elizabeth George's books and this is another excellent one. As usual for her, it's an English murder mystery that's really a vehicle for psychological character studies, with bits of wisdom and precise observations throughout it. And, speaking of good books, I recently finished "The Cornish Trilogy" by Robertson Davies that several people enthusiastically recommended a while ago. I started the first book last fall and couldn't get into it, and then picked it up a few months ago, started again and ended up zipping through all three. What great reading! Thoroughly enjoyable. No Joni allusions, but lots of imagination and humor and interesting characters. Any suggestions about what Davies to read next? More surpisingly for me, i was thinking more or less the same thing yesterday. About how lessons keep presenting themselves until we recognize them and learn them. Some of these lessons are not easy at all and they would differ from person to person. It is strange that although the circumstances may differ and the people may differ, the lesson is the same. At least that is what i was thinking about a particular 'lesson' I think I have to come to grips with. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 01:05:20 -0700 From: Richard Goldman Subject: Re: Graham, HOB, post delayed(njc) Darice! I know how you feel about being a novice, so I might not be the best to advice you. However, I just got "Don Juan's Reckless Daugther" a little while ago and I'm completely addicted to the album! It's got some beautifully arranged songs on it and is very varied (it's even got some jungle pieces!). I can also recommend "Court And Spark" with some great piano songs and a bit of jazz as well. Just my two cents worth though I am not as deeply involved into Joni as others here and surely don't have the knowledge about her that some of them do. For me, C and S and Blue are at the top of the list with FTR. Hard to say which is better, to me, as they have all touched me deeply in different ways. If pressed, I would have to give FTR the top spot though for it is incomparable. LOTC and Turbulent Indigo are in the next group for me. I find TI great driving music and love to listen to it while in the car. It has grown on me while I have had it and I seem to like it more each time I listen to it. Many don't care for Sex Kills, which I didn't the first few times I listened to it, but now I adore it. The rest of the albums (the ones I have and in this group I write about Hejira, THOSL, Clouds, and NRH) don't do much for me as albums. I have found tunes on each that I like but overall I consider them average to poor, Clouds included. Hasn't mattered how many times I have listened to it, it still bores me and I like Judy Collins version of Both Sides Now much more than Joni's. Hejira seems to be a favorite here although I don't get it. Do love Black Crow and Song for Sharon but can't find the appeal for Coyote and think Blue Motel Room is just dreadful. At the bottom of the heap is CMIAR. This is terrible, in my opinion, and not worth the money I spent on it. Most of it I can't even hear Joni, which is why I bought it in the first place. Apples and oranges but do get FTR, you cannot go wrong with it and it will forever be close to your heart. And: I haven't even heard DED. Have been tempted to buy it numerous times but the comments here have scared me away from doing so. Might get up the courage to spend that money one of these days. Also, haven't heard Mingus, DJRD, or TTT. Have some more listening to do and that is something to look forward to, if I can locate them. Usually they broadcast liberal-bashing shows with hate-mongering hosts for 23 hours a day (96.9 FM), but they do have one okay show from noon to one on weekdays (Eagan & Broudie). Today, in honor of Bruce's appearance tonight at the Fleet Center, Eagan & Broudie featured a call-in poll that co-host Jim Broudie was conducting which asked, "Is Bruce the best male performer in the world, or is Jim crazy?" Anyway, the votes were about 95% for Bruce, 5% for Jim being crazy. Then, after dealing with one caller who disagreed with him, Broudie said, "It's like the greatest female performer of our time -- Joni Mitchell -- said, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." ! ! ! He didn't say that Joni was the greatest female singer or songwriter or musician, he said she was the GREATEST FEMALE PERFORMER OF OUR TIME!!! (Even I don't go that far, although I *would* say greatest songwrter, male or female.) I think this guy should be on this list. Have a great weekend, everybody. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 23:30:43 +0100 From: "William" Subject: Kakki says, There is a Godzilla Maybe running behind the times on this one ... Must go down as the sitcom episode with the most Joni moments - Grace gets to 'sing' Free Man twice; Will tells Grace to get into her BYT; Joni + Mitchell a head-giddying 1943 times. I was half expecting a cameo walk on. Cheez, where IS the woman? Any minute now. Kakki! Kakki! Kakki! <<>> Aaaaaaargh! Indeed! Not just a little green, tropical verdurous Godzilla-sized at your close encounter. Thanks everso for the account. Got to get my vinyls out and listen to those GN albums. All this and Jack says (paraphrasing) on seeing Karen's massive clauset, "If I had a clauset this big I would never have come out of it." All this and Patsy says on Ab Fab, "They are so rich they could order China for take away." From the Chinese Cafe of course - felt a little more JC was needed in there. Weekendorphin overload. I know I am many digests behind, but I just had to say..... MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! I am a musical fanatic, and love every single one of your picks, except I have so far refused to see Sweeney Todd. I just can't bring myself to see this one, even gave up seasons seats to not go to it. I fell in love with Broadway and musicals when I was 7 years old when I saw Ethel Merman {yes, Smurf, Susan and Kay, *really!!} :-) in Annie Get Your Gun, and never looked back. Welcome to the list, Sarah. The good thing about being relatively new to Joni is that you have so much to look forward to and you'll be kept busy for quite a while! I agree with Christina/Christopher ;) about Don Juan's (W)reckless Daughter, but it happens to be among my favourites, although many people think it's flawed. (I don't mind flawed.) Then again, there's For the Roses, another personal favourite. Night Ride Home and Turbulent Indigo are also good choices. (There aren't really any bad choices, just some less good choices depending on your own personal taste.) Have fun. (P.S. My daughter's name is Sarah, with an h - such a lovely name!) ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 22:20:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Joni CDs - some really cheap - at hmv.ca So, I decided to check www.hmv.ca to see if there was any chance of ordering "Travelogue" in advance from a local source. No apparent sign of it yet (how Canadian!), but I did find a few interesting things: First, you can get DED for $7.99 CDN ($5.26 US)- is that cheap or what?! Jeez, even if you're one of those who hate it, you should buy it anyway - buy two! Second, HOSL or NRH for $10.99 CDN or $7.23 US. There are a few more for $16.99 CDN, which is still cheap for here. Then, there's this other thing I've never heard of - "For Free" for $12.99 CDN. Judging by the track listing, it looks like one of those "Ladies of the Canyon" things rearranged (what's that other one called? Girls in the Valley? the one with the really ugly caricature of Joni on it). But this version doesn't have that ugly picture on it. There's no other info given, but I suppose it's one of those strange import rip-offs (how does that happen anyway?) ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 21:33:42 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: Joni CDs - some really cheap - at hmv.ca Catherine wrote: what's that other one > called? And this radio guy is an ultra liberal from the People's Republic of Cambridge on a station that panders to the absolute lowest of conservative racists, sexists and haters, so I cut him a break. Within the context of the radio show, Joni would have too, I think. And just for the record, I DO have a problem most of the time when anyone refers to Joni as the best 'FEMALE' anything. Her greatness transcends any of that bullshit. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 23:01:41 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni CDs - some really cheap - at hmv.ca - njc Catherine asks: << There's no other info given, but I suppose it's one of those strange import rip-offs (how does that happen anyway?) >> I blame Muller. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 20:39:23 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Graham show - Joni and related content - LONG Ah, but O Great Wit, you are fabulous ALL the time while I merely catch stray moments before turning back into the pumpkin again ;-D Kakki > Gee, Darice and Kakki . . .
