Joni was sitting at a big circular bar and when she saw me she turned to the man next to her and told him -- I guessed from lip reading and the gestures she was making -- that she wanted to meet me. So I walked over to her, she stood up . . . and she was about seven feet tall! Shortly after that, Joni was going to perform using some kind of technology I had never heard of. Employment was not to be had, and I have some personal issues to resolve, so I'm back in the Motor City again for awhile, and just rejoined the list last night. Oooh that Kakki! I must tell you all that while I was in Los Angeles my one accomplishment was the ability to sing live at many different venues, which gave me the most joy I've had in years. I managed to meet pianists who were at least able to play "Both Sides Now" so I did perform that song quite a bit, to appreciative crowds. At one venue there was a lady in the back singing along ever so softly! I managed to have one performance videotaped by a friend, but have yet to actually see it (shudder). As well, my one super bonus to being in Los Angeles was the opportunity to spend some wonderful evenings with Kakki. She is the most intelligent, supportive, sensitive and beautiful woman I've ever met and I miss her and our weekly meetings at the Red Lion tremendously!! However, while I was there I did play for her some of my old tunes from a compilation recording of mine I call "Dust From The Shelves." She spilled the beans on my "Carnival In Kenora" version that was recorded in, I believe 1972, when I was just a baby!! I sound like a little boy, and am not sure I find it worthy for the covers collection. I'll take a hesitant listen again and see how I feel about it. Anyway, it's great to be back on the list, and thank you all for being here. My heartfelt thanks again to Kakki for making my stay in Los Angeles so very wonderful. Great songs, and great music. Jerry np: Joni - Both Sides Now (original studio version) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Oct 2002 14:04:57 -0400 From: Merk54@aol.com Subject: The dreaded Hatbox! I must be the only one in the universe that actually didn't mind the dreaded hatbox - aside from the fact that the CD was damaged - which in my case the CD crapped out in the middle of ACOY which was pretty freakin' awful. But as far as the concept itself, I kind of enjoyed it, especially the mini copies of the artworks and the lyric sheets. I took the two images of Joni at the bar, and took the lyric sheet from BSN and framed them in a single matt with three cutouts, with the Joni facing out in the left cutout, the lyrics to BSN in the center and the backwards Joni on the right. I used a matt and picture frame that was the same basic color as the dreaded hatbox, and if I do say so myself, it turned out Mah-va-lous! Plus it's a rather small size, so I was able to hang it up with out taking up a whole wall, and my wife even likes it! Since the CD was defective, when I returned the box for a good one, I accidentally forgot to include the artworks and lyric sheets, so I still have a complete set of everything to keep with the hatbox. My only real gripe about the whole thing was the CD holder being too wimpy to secure the CD. It was probably a little pimpy to put out the hatbox version ahead of the regular release, but in all honesty, I would have bought the hatbox version anyway, so in my case this was irrelevant. As far as the price of the new CD, I can't really complain about that either. What other artist do you know of who puts so much energy and creativity into putting out an album? You just know there is going to be original artwork involved. Doesn't Joni deserve a little extra credit for that? Then there's the whole point of paying for the orchestra, etc. I've always been amazed by the flat rate of entertainment. For all practical purposes, most CD's cost about the same, just like all movies cost the same to go see. Whether the movies costs 5 million to make, or 150 million, you still pay about $7.50 to see them. Whether a cd is made by 5 unknown people in a band, with just a photo of the band on the cover, or the cd has a major talent with a fifty piece orchestra and original artwork, the cost is still about the same. This has always seemed very odd to me, so if Joni's new CD is a little on the high end of things, so what - in my opinion, it is worth the added cost. Of course peoples reaction to the music will play a big part in the Return on Investment piece of this. If Joni knocks a home run with these new versions of the songs, then most people will feel the price was well worth it. If she only puts another nice album (as in BSN), then most people will feel disappointed. At least that's my take on things. "Love" was the title and it was a collection of shorts. Liv Ullmann was in on of the segments. It was never released to my knowledge. Joni's was a piece in which she played a Back man (see the cover of DJRD) with a boom box wigged out on Miles Davis - or something like that. She never had anything good to say about the project to my recollection. I have tried to find it to no avail. I believe there is a story about her going to a party in Black paint - anyway she was fixated on the idea for a while, as DJRD exhibits. I stand to be corrected on this.
