But I had to mention that I was totally moved by Norah Jones, who I heard for the first time on a radio station in Seattle when I was out there on business a couple of weeks ago. I'm mystified as to why I've never heard of her in New York before; her debut CDs been out since February. She blew me away. She's all that's been playing on my CD player for the last 2 weeks. Does anyone know her work? She's a little bit Shawn Colvin, a little bit Diana Krall, maybe some Bonnie Raitt thrown in. I don't detect Joni, but she has the same ability to move me as Joni, but mostly with her voice and not with her lyrics, which is how Joni does it for me. When I got home with the CD, my 11 year old says, "Oh yeah, we saw her video on the plane when we went on vacation. I really like that song." ('Don't Know Why') Anyway, where the hell have I been? Anybody like her? _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 17:57:29 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: 10 Desert Island Soundtrack Albums, Bob, njc love all the mark knopfler soundtracks, esp Cal add Oliver to the list of broadway soundtracks ps, was in a clothing store today & heard someone singing a cover of ladies of the canyon...the volume was low but it sounded like it could have been annie lenox ? ******************************************** Kate Bennett: www.katebennett.com Sponsored by Polysonics/Atlantis Sound Labs Over the Moon- "bringing the melancholy world of twilight to life almost like magic" All Music Guide ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 17:58:15 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: 10 Desert Island Soundtrack Albums, Bob, njc The only real dud in the show is "A Real Nice Clambake". My Fair Lady (broadway cast - Julie Andrews=Eliza Doolittle, musically anyway) 2. A Little Night Music (broadway cast) 3. Yentl (so what if it's all Babs, she sings beautifully and passionately like she means every word and it doesn't get any better than that) 4. Dr. Zhivago (I know, I know, 'Lara's Theme' has been done to death but I love this movie and I love the music in it) 5. Godspell (soundtrack) 6. Beaches (soundtrack - get over 'Wind Beneath My Wings' - this has some great covers by the one & only Divine Miss M) 7. Mary Poppins (first one I ever owned - knew every song by heart at one time) 8. The Sound of Music (I was a real Julie Andrews queen) 9. Cabaret (soundtrack) 10. A Star Is Born (soundtrack, Garland - at her peak and it doesn't get any better than *that*) I also love the music from 'West Side Story' but for some reason don't own a recording of it. Honorable mention: 'Funny Girl' (soundtrack), 'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever' (soundtrack), 'The King and I' (soundtrack), Carousel (soundtrack), '2001: A Space Odyssey' (soundtrack), 'Pippin' (broadway cast), 'Star!' (soundtrack - yet another Julie Andrews), 'Camelot' (soundtrack), 'Company' (broadway cast), 'Do I Hear A Waltz' (broadway cast - Stephen Sondheim meets Richard Rogers - no great songs but some wonderfully witty lyrics), 'The Wizard of Oz' (soundtrack - Harold Arlen's sublime melodies and E. Y. Harburg's effervescent lyrics - Harburg was the Sondheim of his day, lyrically), 'For the Boys' (soundtrack), 'Gypsy' (TV movie soundtrack - you can have Merman, you can have Russell, I'll take Bette anyday, thank you!), 'Hello Dolly' (both soundtrack & broadway cast - love Babs belting 'Before the Parade Passes By' and 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes' but love the whimsy of Carol Channing, too), 'Hair' (broadway cast - this one would have been number 11)..... and you know there may be more....... I've been watching the re-runs and really enjoying this show. Last night they ran the episode where Nate and his sister fly to Seattle to drive a 'client' who was afraid of flying back to LA. They stay at Nate's friend Lisa's house, a huge place with a large front porch and a gorgeous view of downtown Seattle. That is a real house on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle not far from where I work. I have walked by it many times. And the view they showed on 'Six Feet Under' is for real (not like the view outside of Frasier's apartment - I don't know of any apartment building in Seattle where you could get that view.) Anyway, it was kind of cool to see that house on TV. I have often fantasized about owning it.
