Sometimes if things get hectic, I hang onto certain posts to read later - this was one. This should be required reading for anyone working in the mental health field. If you read them in the order in which you listed them, it's particularly touching. I knew some of the details of Jaco's life and death but still, when you read these in chronological order, it's very powerful. I got about halfway through and I had to stop because I was crying too much - it's so tragic, and the words "there but for fortune..." keep going through my head. If you don't mind the bandwidth, I'm reposting your whole post in case anyone missed it, but I warn you all, you're probably going to cry. --- Les Irvin wrote: > Joniphiles - > My never-ending search for Joni-related articles > found me surfing the Miami > Herald website tonight. Now, as I am in the local public library, the newest one on the shelf is Issue 906, Oct. 3, 2002, and it's not the same one. Therefore, I guess the one at the newsstand is Issue 907, Oct. 17, 2002. The Joni content of this post is that, alas, there is no Joni content in the poll -- unless I managed to overlook it. I skimmed it quickly, but think I saw every album, and did not see any Joni Mitchell albums, nor any Charles Mingus albums. There was, however, a Miles Davis album. I use the term "album" as I believe the poll did: For the muscial content + packaging, regardless of the physical medium, vinyl LP, tape or CD. And, of course, the poll was a popularity contest by self-selected raters -- not experts, not critics and not a scientifically sampled poll. Change subject: This evening, if nothing goes wrong, I am going to a Jane Monheit concert. I believe Ms. Monheit has been the subject of commentary here before. She is sometimes touted as "the next Diana Krall" and, like Ms. Krall, is a jazz-and-more artist, sings and plays piano, cites J.M. as an influence and does a cover of "A Case of You." Ms. Monheit also plays clarinet. AND CHATROOM ANYONE? :) :) (NJC) Just had the pleasure of almost a mini-fest. Christina from Denmark has been in London over the weekend, and had time to hook up with Les Ross and trundle up to Cambridge. We spent the late afternoon singing and playing Joni songs, taking a cheaufeured (sp?) punt tour along the river Cam, and getting dinner in Cambridge. I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but Christina really does have an amazing voice, and our Mr. Ross hides his light under a bushel far too much. He'll protest, of course, but it's true. Me? I'm slightly pished, but on a miniature high having just reminded myself how much talent there is sloshing around this place. Hell, it beats panicing about next week's conference speech that I have to give. Gulp. And if you're around in "real time", come on over to the chatroom. To think... while I heard of Jaco's death on the TV news, aged 16 and not yet a bass player, I didn't know who he was. The full impact came six or so years later when I picked up Hejira. There's an official Jaco Pastorius web site, by the way, run by Ingrid Pastorius and other family members. Lots of personal messages from them too, which is so touching. The second song was an attempt to capitalize on the dance.. Curiously my web notes show that there was a second song named Do the Freddie written Chubby Checker! I am printing the Freddie lyrics, the Chubby Checker lyrics are so very similar but not the same. Oh, hell, I'll give a CC sample after the FATD version. By an odd coincidence, the details of which that I would never reveal to you for fear of them coming back to haunt me, I did a demonstration of the Freddie to a group of people in my aerobic class just last week. Well my dear Bree, at first I had my doubts for couldn't see anyone replacing Julie but now that you have expanded: yes, I see it. And perhaps in the sequence where the older nun sings "climb every mountain", someone could sing "ludwig's tune." mack > > > >How bout as Marie in the Sound Of Music? For some reason, the Chubby Checker lyrics are the ones I remember Freddy and the Dreamers singing. (Those are the lyrics I quoted in my initial post.) For JMDLers who aren't as old as dirt, Chubby Checker was famous for introducing The Twist to the world. (C'mon, baby, let's do the twist . . .) My friend Wendy (Yes, Jimmy, that's really her name!) and I were driving back from New Hampshire tonight and we were listening to a classic rock station. They played "Master Jack" and I stunned myself and Wendy by knowing every single word of that insipid song, right down to the final, "You're a very strange man, aren't you, Master Jack." This led to conversations about such classics as "Come a Little Bit Closer" by Jay and the Americans" (There's that word again!) and "I've Never Been to Me" plus "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Then I broke the news to Wendy that I had read in today's Parade magazine that Lulu has a 25 year-old son who was going to play Prince WIlliam in a TV show tonight. (Talk about dragging your feet to slow those circles down . . .) Anyway, Lulu's baby is named Jordan Frieda and he is her son by a man named John Frieda. I said I was surprised by that because I always thought Lulu married one of the BeeGees, and Wendy said I was nuts. (Some news flash!) Anyway, as most people of a certain age in the US know, Lulu was -- I think -- a two-hit wonder, with "To Sir With Love" and "Oh Me, Oh My," which are both great slow-dance songs, by the way. But I think she has had a longer and much more sucessful career in the UK. So my question to the list is: Did Lulu ever marry one of the BeeGees, or did I actually overdose at some point during the 60s and 70s? Thanks, --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 22:33:04 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: NJC Slow Dancing/The Freddie/Lulu Don't know about the marriage Bob but she did have another hit with "I Could Never Miss You (More Than I Do) in 1983, approximately. Don't remember "Oh Me, Oh My." Your post reminds me of a friend that I had back in Lubbock, (well, our relationship was another story) but he loved that song) "Never Been To Me." Who sang that? It made me cringe. As far as I am concerned, the best version of it was the scene from the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert when they used it for the drag number. lol. And writing of that movie, who would have thought Guy Pearce could possibly be straight after that performance? mack ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 23:36:05 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC Slow Dancing/The Freddie/Pomus/Lou Reed Vince writes: << DO THE FREDDIE Chubby Checker (Pomus - Appell) >> So the songwriting credit is shared with Doc Pomus? Isn't he the one whose death lead Lou Reed to write and record the incredible "Magic and Loss" album? This is a brilliant piece of work, but it's soooo sad I rarely listen to it. Besides the title track, it includes "Power and Glory," "What's Good" and "Harry's Circumcision." I really admire this album, but it's so dark I can only listen to it when I feel like I'm so happy I could just drop dead, which isn't often. I think many people make the mistake of assuming that Lou's career ended with the Velvet Underground, but his stuff from the 80s and 90s is absolutely profound. "Drella" is one of my desert island pics. And "New York" is also excellent. His songwriting actually approaches the level of you-know-who sometimes. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 23:38:20 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni an actress? - njc Mack writes: << And perhaps in the sequence where the older nun sings "climb every mountain", someone could sing "ludwig's tune." >> Better yet . . . Well, there are two parts to that question, and I think I'll stick to the first part (I'm sure some of the "Ethel" moments at Jonifest were induced by drug-flashbacks.....) Lulu did indeed marry one of the BeeGees - Maurice. You can see the happy couple here (scroll to the bottom): http://www.brothersgibb.org/history-part-4.html "Lulu wore white boots, a white mink-trimmed coat and white mini dress and Maurice wore a white suit." Nice..... I'm not sure when they divorced, but from memory the marriage didn't last too long. And yes, Lulu has had a long and successful career in the UK. I was sure Lulu married one of the Gibb brothers after her highly publicized May/December marriage and divorce from Frank Sinatra! And speaking of Lulu, here's another story with Lulu content . . . After Janis and Jimi died in my senior year in high school, my best friend and I decided to play a little joke. (I know their deaths were tragic -- and I had even seen Janis' last concert that previous summer -- but we *were* 17 and I have always had a very dark sense of humor.) Anyway, we started a rumor that Lulu had died of an overdose. Well, back then no one had Internet access, so no one could check the story. (Hell, we were glad to have pads of papyrus to write on in those days!) By the end of the school day, the rumor had swept the school and my friend and I were killing ourselves laughing over it. But as Ethel Merman would say, "HERE'S THE KICKA!" Months later, our clueless classmates were still talking about "poor Lulu" every time the subject of overdoses came up, which was quite often in 1970 - 1971! OK, everyone.
