Yes. Judy had one son. She battled his father for custody. She was on the road supporting them all while her son's father accused her of abandoning them. Her son battled depression, drugs, and alcoholism all his life, then committed suicide just when he seemed to get his life on track. An artist friend of mine was in a private rehab center with him in the early 70's. He had painted a gorgeous Joan of Arc after Judy's recording of the L. Cohen song. I sent her a slide of it and told her he was having a bad time battling alcohol. She sent him a 3 page letter that thrilled him to this day. He still drinks, but he's still painting. It seems that no matter what scheme is used to let people cast votes, the votes get called into question because people didn't understand how to cast their votes. In response to this problem the Florida Elections Commission has awarded Fisher-Price the contract to develop a "less confusing balloting system." The Commission has accepted Fisher-Price's proposed system that is based on their classic See 'n Say toys. "It's really quite simple," spokeswoman Liz Holden explained. "All you have to do is turn the pointer towards the candidate of your choice and cast your vote by pulling the string. Then the voice of the candidate comes on and says, for example, "Al Gore says, 'You have voted for me.'" The system has been successfully tested on Kindergarten children. They will next test it on the Early Bird Special crowd at a Palm Beach Denny's. Playskool was also asked to submit a proposal but their plan, based on the popular Poundin' Bedbugs toy, where a vote is cast by pounding the plastic head of the chosen candidate using a small hammer, was rejected as being "far too complex." Overall, I think the songs on her first album are stronger and stand out to me more individually, where as on this recording, I am not as into the songs themselves as much. I feel like she was trying really hard to create a really good followup to the first record and it just doesn't come across as subtlely. I think its great that many of her songs have really good messages, but the message ends up standing out alot more than the song in many cases. There's nothing on there quite as powerful as "Brown Skin" or "Am I Ready for Love." But she is very young and if she can get back to just focusing on writing beautiful songs then I think she will do just fine. Reminds me of the "feel good" sound of the 70's Stevie Wonder stuff. And she released 16 tracks, pretty impressive for a follow-up. I hope she's still around to enjoy people saying "Alicia WHO?" ;~) I agree...it really does remind me of that and I think she captures that feeling really well. "The One" I really like...out of all the songs it sounds remarkably like a Stevie song which I can hear in my head but I think it definately stands on its own. I guess I can't really fault her for being so enthusiastic and full of warm feelings...it really does give you a good vibe and honesty and simplicity of it I think really stands out in comparison to Alicia Keyes and others...a really interesting direction to go in. The title itself, A Voyage to India comes from a Stevie Wonder songs and like Stevie, she has a song on there about God which I think is really cool. They were doing "Doubleplay Tuesday." Right after two great videos from Patti Smith's "Dream of Life" album, I almost fainted when I saw Joni looking great and strumming and singing "Big Yellow Taxi" from "Painting With Words and Music" (which I still haven't seen in its entirety). Then, the real shocker. A video for "Underneath the Streetlights" from Wild Things that was erroneously titled "Streetlights." It was Joni (with an '80s Debbie Harry haircut), Larry Klein (looking very very young), with band, basically making eyes at each other while they strummed and she sang. At first the vocals were out of sync with the movements of her lips. But then it got it together and made me appreciate a song I never noticed off my least favorite Joni album. "For Everyman" "Late for the Sky", "The Pretender", "Running on Empty" were really good records and he still writes good songs (i had purchased his last album, Looking East, when it first came out and liked 3 or 4 of the songs) yet, there is something about him that is just sort of 'Melba-Toasty' sort of cardboard like. Through the production work and penmanship of lead singer Eugene Record, the Chi-Lites made some rather inviting contributions to the cause of many with songs like "Yes I'm Ready," "We Are Neighbors" and the title track "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People." The former addresses the issue of school busing and integration during the late '60s and early '70s. The second selection confronts the realities of Blacks and Whites living side by side. The latter's title implies politicians and/or the powers-that-be need to relinquish some of their control and put some in the hands of the people. "Give More Power to the People" peaked at number four on the Billboard R&B charts, and "Yes I'm Ready" was never a release but is a standard among many Quiet Storm formats. As for the romance the Chi-Lites became known for, "Have You Seen Her" heads the list. The timeliness number had a two week run at number one on the Billboard R&B charts. "I Want to Pay You Back," "Love Uprising" and "You Got Me Walkin'" round out that list. The former is mellower and the other two have bouncy rhythms. All the songs on this album are polished with the group's exquisite three-part hamonies and dynamic string and horn arrangements. ~ Craig Lytle, All Music Guide http://www.artistdirect.com/store/artist/album/0,,64153,00.html (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People CHI-LITES (Eugene Record) For God's sake, you got to give more power to the people There's some people up there hoggin' everything Tellin' lies, givin' alibis about the people's money and things And if they gonna throw it away, might as well give some to me Yeah they seen and heard it, but never had misery There are some people who are starvin' to death Never knew but only hate us [?], and they never had happiness Oh, oh, oh, if you don't have enough to eat, how can you think of love You don't have the time to care so it's crime you're guilty of, oh yeah For God's sake, you got to give more power to the people For God's sake, why don't you give more power to the people Cut this jive and see who's got the power to kill the most When they run out of power, the world's gonna be a ghost They know we're not satisfied, so we begin to holler Makin' us a promise and throwin' a few more dollars There's no price for happiness, there's no price for love Up goes the price of livin', and you're right back where you was So whatever you got, just be glad you got it Now we're gonna get on up and get some more of it http://ntl.matrix.com.br/pfilho/html/lyrics/f/for_gods_sake_give_more_power_to_the_people.txt and Chi-Lites history: http://www.onlinetalent.com/Chilites_biography.html Vince ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #395 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
