We had been chatting on the chatline with Yael about stuff, and then Paz went away unexpectedly. I had been teasing him about hurricane Isadore about to smake him, and then, suddenly it did! He lost power. He called me on an analog phone, which was still working, and asked me to spread the word that we would be out of touch due to the storm, until whenever. Of course, you can call him and harass him if you have the numbah. He'll enjoy it! Good question! Do they have to be alive, though?! If they do, then I've already had one wish come true - Diana Krall singing A Case Of You. She really nails that one. On the rest of the wish list, maybe Stephen Stills doing Black Crow, with a loooooong guitar solo in the middle. Or what about Manhatten Transfer, doing Raised On Robbery acappela (or Dry Cleaner)? Crowded House would be a nice one for me too (the NZ connection) - not sure what song would suit them, though. And if we're allowed to choose artists who are no longer with us, I'd have Janis Joplin doing whatever she wanted! But, yes, you are perfectly correct. Do you know the rest of the story ? "My favorite> > one neither > of you mentioned, River." Actually, River is one of the closing 3 songs on Blue, so I did highlight it without naming it. Note that Steve T's (Amelio Alamo's) reply of today also named the same three cuts. It is one of Joni's fortes to touch common ground by sharing her feelings and experience. Apropos of your anecdote, James Taylor (about whom the song was written, I believe) sang the song back to Joni 30 years later at the TNT tribute concert (which might be an interesting tape for you to view - I have shown it to a few non-fans, and it was well received). I recall that name, vaguely. They only lasted a short while. About 6 years? Some people have told me they were 'good' but I don't want to spend the money on a whole album if I just like one or two songs. Are any of the albums good all the way through? Are any of the studio albums worth buying or should I just get the hits package? If I were to, someday, consider buying one Beatles album, to test them out, what one title do you suggest? Brian Blades' brother, who did a fine job on Emmylou Harris' "Spyboy" video is Rueben Blades. I read on the Internet that he was also in movies and they named a sandwich after him. I'd play the "Spyboy" video tonight but I'm catching up with an old friend of the family, James Taylor. I bought the new one, "October Road". I was surprised to find that he wrote it all in blank verse- JT's first collection without a single rhyme anywhere. Imagine how hard it must have been for him! Maybe not, although there are revered haiku masters in Japan so it wouldn't surprise me if employees in Japanese IT departments would be communicating this way. It's an enjoyable challenge trying to fit what you want to say into the haiku structure. (For a short while a coworker and I emailed each other in haiku; few words, lots of thinking time; obviously way too much free time.) In the collection Vince sent the haiku about the crashed computer being only a stone is about as simple and profound an anti-materialism statement I've ever heard. > -yael, wondering if it was a joke... I don't know, but I did enjoy reading them. (Thanks, Vince!) The thing that stuck out to me was the description of haiku as free verse, unless what's meant by that is that the ends of lines don't have to rhyme. It's far from being free verse, though, so I'm getting my teacher hat on (it's part of "oldest child syndrome"; I don't think there's a cure). Apologies to all who know all about this wonderful form of verse, and for those who don't... Haikus always have three lines and the structure is very rigid. To be haiku, the poem must have 17 syllables in this format: 5 syllables 7 syllables 5 syllables Traditionally they also evoke some kind of image. Joni's now singing in my head: songs are like tatoos you know I've been to sea before crown and anchor me Almost haiku, or... make the "you know" one word, "y'know", which is the way she sings it, and there it is, a perfect haiku. I knew Joni's rhythm in those lines reminded me of something... no wonder I wanted to talk about haiku. And reading about Blue recently on the list... well, it fits for the moment. I recently listened to her version of Scarlett and it blows me away. It would be especially great to hear her rich deep voice singing some of Joni's helium-voice tunes like "Blue Boy" and "I Think I Understand". And I'd love to hear Richard Thompson doing "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire." He could make it really scary. I'd also love to hear him sing "Amelia", with just acoustic guitar.
