I've always thought ACOY was about James Taylor, for several reasons: Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" Maybe the line "constantly in the darkness" refers to his drug use, which was pretty heavy for a long time. He's saying his behaviour may not be pretty, but at least he's consistent. Her response is that it may be constant, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid Maybe the devil in question is (again) drugs? I'm sure I've read several different places that James introduced Joni to heavier drugs than she'd previously experienced - maybe the fact that he was using, and still functioning (relatively) well, made her feel more comfortable about trying it too? I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said "Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed" I've always thought the woman in question was Kate Taylor, James' sister ("a mouth like yours" = a family resemblance), and knowing of James drugs problems (and his history of depression, etc.), she was warning Joni that he had some problems that might be more severe than she was aware - although she was still encouraging their relationship. Oh but you are in my blood You're my holy wine You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you darling Still I'd be on my feet I would still be on my feet I've always loved these lines. Like she's saying their love has it's highs and lows (and that's definitely been documented!) but she always needs or wants more. Or rather she can always take more - can never get enough of him. Too much is never enough. Pure supposition on my part, of course! It still remains one of my favourite Joni songs, especially the BSN version. And I've had the privilege of hearing/seeing Diana Krall perform it live, and that was just incredible! Hell P.S. Happy now, Bob? I would guess it's about JT, but to me the strength of the song is its universality and the way we get to make it our own. I'll bet if any of us were singing it, we would not be thinking of James Taylor but rather the significant subject in our own head. That's why it works so well for Krall & others, you really feel like they are singing it to their own "JT". Remember too, that the lyrics evolved a bit from what she originally wrote... Next morning, I found the whole of south London in power cut darkness, and the whole of southern Britain in shock from a storm that had flattened a quarter of a million trees. Earthquake - schmearthquake! Martin. (In London). Azeem said....... There I was sitting at my pc just before 1.am this morning, when I heard a few small taps somewhere, followed by a very strange sensation, that felt like a small ripple under my feet. Thinking maybe someone was trying to get in (a bit paranoid, as I was burgled about 3 weeks ago), I made sure the front door was secure and though no more of it. Then this morning I heard in the news that there was an earthquake in the Midlands at precisely that time, with tremors felt all over England. My first earthquake! "Only" 4 on the Richter scale, so not a big one. Did anyone else in England or Wales feel it too?? Subway Station #5 the second cut is my favorite it stands out, no vocal on this track just overdrive riffing between a methenyesque guitarist W. Muthspiel and her on the Keys. Her covers of Summertime and My Girl are turned into her own songs. The photos in the CD remind me of Zelda the Beat girl friend on the old TV show "Doobie Gillis". On bass is Marc Johnson,Adam Nusbaum Drums. Her Voice is a jazzy mezzo soprano who has sung all the standards by heart in to many smoky bars. I see she does a cover of Take Me to the River (Talking Heads). Just a little tidbit quote from the Ellen McIlwaine site: Excerpt from an article by Patricia Robertson titled SLIP SLIDING AWAY from Avenue magazine, Dec. 2001: If she plays like a cosmic force, why isn't she a household name? Many female lead guitarists play brilliantly but remain obscure. "I can list a whole bunch of female guitarists nobody's ever heard of, like Joanna Connor and Jennifer Batten (who played with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson). There are a few who have broken out like Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, and Chrissie Hynde, but many of us remain unnoticed." says McIlwaine. Does anyone think that Ellen is making a sound quote here?
