The program was broadcast six days later. Joni sang Chelsea Morning, The Gallery, Night in the City, and Cactus Tree. Joni was booked for several other Radio 1 sessions during tours in 1968 and 1969, but all were cancelled for various reasons. 1985: The Alberta Reporter ran an editorial cartoon with a likeness of Joni. Wally described the situation: "On what is called The Sunshine Coast near Vancouver, where Joni has had a house and property since the early 70's, a salmon fishing company had begun to build a huge $2 million plant. The other property owners, Joni's neighbors, asked her to join a protest against this enterprise that they believed could destroy the natural state of affairs in the area. Joni spoke to the press from her home in L.A. and said: "I thought I'd purchased a piece of wilderness, but it's being corrupted by industry." The Alberta Report newspaper took the side of the hatchery reporting that it would bring hundreds of jobs to the population who was heavily unemployed, and they claimed that Joni was not really a current resident and was rarely even in B.C. The salmon company complained that this was a case of a Hollywood celebrity trying to smear an honest fish business." More info: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Cartoon85.html 1994: Joni was the only performer in a special 90-minute edition of MuchMusic's "Intimate & Interactive." And it happens that a band gets together and writes & tours and hones their material and then releases that first LP which represents the best of what they've done. And when it's a hit like August, the pressure is on for the follow-up, and they don't have the luxury of time like they did the first time 'round. That being said, I thought 'Recovering The Satellites' was an excellent follow-up. "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" might be my favorite song from them, period. Was not as crazy about all of 'This Desert Life', but still some excellent tracks on there, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" at the top of the heap. (But you have to understand, I love Duritz' voice, so I'm an easy sell for these guys). Which brings us to the latest 'Hard Candy' which is a close second to August as being their best to date. Really rocks in their melodic style, the band is tight, and hey it's worth it just for their cover of Big Yellow Taxi! As to your second question - I don't see as they have drastically changed their style much over the course of their 4 studio records, so if you think of them as pop now, then that's what they've been from the start. Plus, they're very creative and kickin' live! I kinda thought it might be about the elusive Leonard Cohen, who shared time with Joni in Greece, among other things. Her Wizard of Id is a mirror to his Suzanne. His words pour out like holy wine ; the map of Canada, etc. It may also be not about any one guy in particular. But I hear a very deep hurt there. I have to say, this is my all-time favorite Joni song, and every once in a while, when done with great heart, and in a new way, this song has a way of catching me off guard, and the tears just roll down. No other song does that to me. (Thank you, Bryan Thomas) This said, James could certainly be her Blue boy... But frankly, I hope I never really know. I like (and respect) the mystery. Some things are best left unsaid. No other song does > that > to me. Interestingly, I put on my gold CD of Blue last night and heard some nuances I'd not caught before. Among them, as she sings "blue" in the opening of the title track, the final note of that word becomes beautifully hollow, like the sound of someone blowing over the lip of a bottle or like wind or like the sound of the sea in a seashell. I listened to this over and over upon discovery, because I'd never heard Joni's voice take on that same quality, and I feel she's done it intentionally here. So, class, if you'll all take out your copies of Blue and turn to the opening word and take a listen, I'd be interested to hear what you think. In any case, it is a timeless song and I have to agree with Kate Bennett that I really wish she'd recorded a version for the new CD!!! That is why I will support the Presidents' decision to go against Iraq. Please understand, I am well aware of what this means. I do not take humane life lightly. But terrorist/terrorism must be stopped all over the world. We, and I mean every nation must put an end to this. For too long we have turned our heads and permitted the few to terrorize the many. We must say, NO MORE. There WILL be repercussions for these acts. Even after 9/11 I can live in a fairly safe country, but many have lived with terror for many, many years. It is time to stop. You can use this link to speak out against war, or you can speak out against terrorism, and support President Bush. Kasey STOP WAR AGAINST IRAQ: SPEAK OUT AND ACT NOW Dear Friends, If you care about peace, now is the time to act. The Bush administration is pushing ahead with plans for a preemptive war against Iraq, a war that would be immoral, illegal and would create a new cadre of terrorists bent on striking out at the US. It is a war that will slaughter Iraqi civilians and kill young Americans. It is a war that will drain our treasury and keep us from providing better education, shelter and health care for our people. It is a war that is almost universally opposed by US allies and countries in the Middle East. It is a war in which no one will win and everyone will lose. It looks as though the Congress is prepared to go meekly along in supporting this mad rush to war. Congress is on a fast-track to consider war resolutions by next Friday (September 27th). The only force that can stop Congress and the administration is the strong, clear voices of the American people speaking out for peace. This is the time to make your voice heard and your presence felt if you care about a peaceful future. I urge you to call or email your representatives in Congress now. If you oppose committing our nation to war, let them know. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) Press Conference Opposing Military Action in Iraq September 19, 2002 10:00 AM Cannon Terrace Thank you, Rep. Kucinich for inviting me to speak today. I do not believe that our world, our children, the people of the Middle East or the citizens of Israel will be safer by going to war against Iraq. I believe that going to war against Iraq would be a mistake. The cost would be heavy in lives lost, dollars wasted and it would squander the goodwill of our allies. The serious question is when will the human race work towards peace, rather than war. As citizens of the most educated and financially well-off country in history, when will we decide to put our strength and our energy and our creativity behind peace rather than destruction. It is true that Saddam Hussein is a dictator he is a menace and the world would be better off without him. But, the world will also be better off if the United States works within the scope of international institutions instead of launching an unprovoked first-strike against Iraq. Americas greatest asset is our moral authority, not our military power. Attacking a sovereign country unprovoked forfeits that authority completely. A war with Iraq will cost between $100-250 billion. Just think what we could do with that amount of money if we decided to invest in humanity rather than military hardware. With $150 billion we could help developing countries in Africa by forgiving half of the continents debt, $112 billion would repair or rebuild all the public schools in the United States, and for only $12 million we could de-mine and replant the breadbasket of Afghanistan to help that nation recover from more than 20 years of continuous war. We owe it to our children to exercise the full range of diplomatic options in Iraq, so we can prevent a war that will cost thousands of lives, and give a boost to our real enemies the terrorists who planned September 11. War represents a failure of national policy. It is a last resort. Americas strength is our commitment to moral action and a government based on the rule of law. That law must never be silent, and our moral sensibilities must never be intimidated by fear. Sincerely, David Krieger Nuclear Age Peace FoundationGet more from the Web.
