Mexico has states as well (Canada has provinces) I thought I had seen Brazil referred to as the United States of Brazil, but if you look at their gov't website, it says Republica Federativa do Brazil, which is more like Federated Republic of Brazil. Maybe I was thinking of another Latin American country. )Interesting sidenote - I started checking different S.A. countries, among the top things that come back from the search for each of these is "CIA - The World Factbook". Hmm.) It may seem arrogant for the USA to call itself what it did, but the name has been around for quite a while, country is in "America", and the states are united, so there you go. Sure, the westen hemisphere is all America (or the Americas), and there may be other united states, but when you say "the United States" or "America", everyone knows who you're talking about. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 06:58:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Is there a world flag?(NJC) --- Lori in MD wrote: > > Does anyone know if there is a world flag > > or "planet earth" flag? > > Here's one: http://www.oneworldflag.org > > (And you know, there may be more!) > I hope there are. Ebay doesn't *really* want you to do that, because they make money on every sale. They present a facade that they don't allow them, but it's so prolific they can't enforce it much. The only way they'll listen to you is if you're the artist, the record label, or the copyright holder. I know because I've tried on several occassions to no result. Now if you try and sell a Led Zep boot, look out - Atlantic polices the listings pretty well. Besides, ultimately it's pretty much a victimless crime. Joni nor any of her record companies make any money on this stuff whether it's sold/traded whatever. The buyer is happy to get it, or they wouldn't bid. No harm, no foul. I just thought it was funny. I am a librarian., (you are one as well, Deb) and I thought I was just pointing out some sources for information.I quickly scanned the San Jose article as an abstract. Although many of the 31,000+ "enemy aliens" were not citizens YET, many had children born in the US, were married to citizens and , according to the oral histories, HAD no ties to Nazi Germany. There is even reference to a German Jew, who after escaping to San Francisco and avoiding the concentration camps, was picked up in one of these sweeps AND deported BACK to Germany. Perhaps a good source for further info could be a search on the "wartime treatment study act" mentioned in the San Jose Mercury article. The very point of the question seems to be what level of abuse and infringement on personal freedoms can/will we ,as a society, permit to create the illusion that something is being done and that therefore "we are safer". I too have German stock in my exceedingly mongrel bloodline, actually on both sides, along with French, English, Scot, Irish. One side is Pennsylvania Dutch, and I have wondered how those communities (with their pacifism) weathered the war years. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Sep 2002 18:47:29 +0200 From: Christoffer Gudi Sommer-Gleerup Subject: Re: Breasteses and languages NJC Cindy wonders: > > hmmm... i would if that's because we have a greater population > to create slang, or because we're more obsessed? Joni has repeatedly said that she was "vilified" for the project. My recollection is closer to the one Mr. Lamadoo restates here. The only reason I can speculate for Joni's perception of "Mingus"' acceptance was poor sales given the success that Steely Dan was having with "Aja" at the same time. That jazz infused pop record was alot more hooky hence much more certain for airplay. Steely Dan unwittingly stole Joni's jazz crown, although HOSL had broken the mold years before. For "Mingus" Joni went into the kitchen armed with the most esoteric and intensely flavored ingredients. I don't think she could be disappointed with the results. In my (Italian) family, we have a saying, "if your hands don't get dirty, the food won't taste good." This image said it all: the cover of DownBeat had a "Shadows and Light" tour photo on it. There were two names on the cover in reference to stories within. The one set in SMALLER type was Count Basie! If that wasn't enough acceptance from the jazz press, I don't know what would have satisfied Joni in that regard. Maybe the phone call that never came from Miles would have made it all worthwhile...either way, "Mingus" is an exceptional piece. CC "Nobody's harder on me than me. BUT it's probably a good thing I didn't pick it up when it first came out...I was into more radical sounds at the time and wouldn't have appreciated it. And I still assert that "Sweet Sucker Dance" is Joni's finest vocal moment to date. Yes, American children are taught that there are seven continents -- Asia, Africa, Europe, Antarctica, Australia, South America and North America -- the world's large land masses. (I'm more confused by Europe being considered a "continent" than I am by North America being considered one.) I don't know when geographers, at least the "western world" ones, decided to agree on such designations. Wally, what were you taught? What were people elsewhere taught? > why people from the US call themselves americans is a mystery to me, but at > least i know that it doesn't have anything to do with americo vespucio. What's the big mystery??? The full name of the country is the United States of America. The name of Canada is Canada. People from there are called Canadians, yes? Is that a surprise? The name of Argentina is ... Argentina? So why would anyone from there or Colombia or Mexico or Uruguay or Peru or Canada want to be called American? Is the supposed arrogance in the founding fathers deciding that "America" would be part of the country's name? Well, why not? Other countries could have done the same, yes? Warning.... Personally, I don't like assigning any titles or lables to myself. I prefer to just be. But if I have to say where I'm from, I would most likely say I am an American. As far as whether or not I'm entitled to designate myself as an American, I could really care less. In my opinion, naming myself an American, indicates nothing at all about me except that I live in or am from one of the 50 states. It doesn't say anything about how I perceive other countries, or the people from those countries, or how I view the United States in relation to anything. And if its taught in US history classes that there are seven continents, then it makes complete sense that the NY Times considers Argentina to be from a different continent. Why wouldn't they? IMO, political correctedness is one of the worst things that ever cropped up in this country or anywhere for that matter. The most important thing is that people find some common ground on which to relate. Why does it matter what they call themselves? I can't help but wonder if Joni Mitchell is in any way the inspiration for the new movie, "The Banger Sisters" starring Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. I was up in the balcony for the taping of "An All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" in April 2000, and I was struck by the frequent, friendly exchanges between two of the audience members near the stage that night: Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. Susan Sarandon spoke during the evening, introducing one of the pre-taped segments about Joni (focusing on her gifts as a songwriter, I believe) and then she introduced a barefoot k.d. lang. Goldie Hawn, however, didn't participate officially, but she was grooving in her seat and appeared to be having a great time with her son, Wyatt. Sometime later, I heard that these two women were planning to make a movie about two aging rock groupies--probably around the time "Almost Famous" (with GH's daughter, Kate Hudson) was released. Well, in case you're counting, this is my second post to the JMDL. No puns this time ("The Banger Sisters" hits theaters, for example)--I learned my lesson. Mostly, I prefer "lurkdom." I heard somewhere in the reports that he may have been on one of the tracks. The last 2 1/2 years I have been a pretty big RY fan and the idea of him and Joni collaborating or just having his guitar behind her voice with the same orchestral maneuvers as "both sides Now" as the background, excites me. I really do hope he is on the album. I am content with the song selection. I will love to hear "Sex Kills" with orchestration eventhough i am a bit skeptical. I am a bit upset that nothing from Hissing is on there. Edith and the KingPin could be fleshed out beautifully and I know, Sweet Bird, Harry's House and even Shadows and Light would fit appropriately on the discs.
