One of the bands that plays a lot around here, Saffire, has a mostly lesbian following. I've seen them live a number of times and while I noticed that, it certainly is not any kind of issue. Ani Difranco of course is even more so...when I saw her in Asheville last year, there was me (45-year old white bread guy),the Italian couple I was with, and 5,000 young girls with shaved heads and misc body jewelry. Again, it didn't bother me, and my presence didn't seem to upset anyone, though they probably thought I was a narc! :~) We were all just grooving to the music, and let's face it, in terms of relationship issues, they are the same whether the sexes are opposite or the same. Paradoxically, it is BECAUSE of my Christianity that I love and accept all people and hope for the same in return. But it is often within the confines of the Christian church where minds seem to be the most closed. Just another reason why the world should be more like a JONIFEST!! :~) Bob NP: Tom Waits, "Jockey Full of Bourbon", Chicago Theatre 8/27/99, (Pally, I'm thinking about you!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Sep 2002 19:16:11 +0100 From: "Amelio Alamo" Subject: NJR Tori Yes Kev I love Tor's music too. (NJC) I know many of you might be tired of reading the fest reports and how wonderful all of the music and fellowships were, but I have to add one small enticement to get you to go to Jonifest 2003. I know it's very minor in the scheme of things, but I did want to you to know how great some of the gifts, raffles, and door prizes were. First of all, everyone who attended received wonderful coffee mugs that were designed by our own Hell. We also got a great video of different Joni stuff that Ashara made. As for the raffles, I want to thank everyone who donated the prizes, everyone who bought tickets (which raised over $600 for the JMDL website), and a special thanks to Sharon (the standup comic) Buffington for being in charge of this fund raiser. Sharon would knock on your door at 5:00 a.m. and force you to buy a ticket :~) Wonder why I mention this? Because it was my lucky night. In the raffle I won one of the best prizes. A Starart book signed by Joni!!!! (thanks so much for the donation Ric). I also won a wonderful needlepoint piece of "Starry Starry Night" created by the multi talented Les Ross. I won a beautiful book on post cards (thanks Alison), plus in the giveaways, I got the songbook to "Hissing of Summer Lawns" and a T-shirt from Joni's BSN tour. There were so many prizes that were donated and I think everyone walked away with something. So that's just one more reason to attend the 2003 fest (in case you don't like music, hugging, talking, laughing, eating, drinking, and staying up late). A workshop on sex acts at the next joniFest. Taught by willing volunteers. Every JMDL member shows up. Everyone gets busted, but outstanding sing a long in the county jail that night. Released on cd, "American Idyll: Sex Acts, Recorded Live in Jail"" raises boucoup bucks for JMDL and it is solvent forever. Jimmy shows up with odd door prizes for the JoniFest and gets a slightly longer sentence but after the jail is surrounded by out on bond festers singing "I will Be Released" over and over, Jimmy's sentence is reduced to time served. In all of this Bob Murphy is sole Fester never arrested; local constables frightened of Ethel Merman as a smurf. Bob Muller has a whole new theme for covers, songs covered in jail, and when Joni hears of all this, she laughs so long and loud she gets inspired to record an album of all new material. That spurs the release of the long rumored tribute album. A video is made of Joni's new single from new album with arrested sex acts JMDLers, which is so popular on mTV it wins the MTV VMA Video of the Year. Moby swears as award is announced, and this time Eminem actually punches him out. Michelle Mayfield mean while is invited to appear on the 700 Club. Pat Robertson produces her next album and she wins the Dove awards and gets invited to White House. G W Bush says something inappropriate about Texas lesbians. Cheney suggests we bomb Texas lesbians as a pre-emptive strike, this endorsed by Pat Robertson. Cheney suggests bombing JoniFest as preemptive strike, this endorsed by David Geffen. Colin Powell goes to JoniFest to negotiate peace and is so smitten by Sherrel's (spelling?) singing that he becomes a JMDLer and is sacked by administration. In a surprise appointment, Marcel is appointed to replace Powell, and surprises Bush after confirmation by smoking weed on state Department lawn and kicking out some killer grooves. Paz goes to DC to join Marcel for lawn performance, followed by Ashara, always in charge of arrangements, and then followed by the rest of the JMDL. The spirit of the JMDL takes over DC. The jet planes turn to butterflies above the nations, the environment is saved before Bush has all the trees logged down (trees causing fires, if you read his last logging proposal). Lori Fye, since she already lives there, is made new president and world peace comes, finally, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius as foresaw by Wally and his fianci one night when they were doing star charts. Michelle Mayfield takes the old Anita Bryant role of Orange Juice Lady and the Bushes retire to now lesbian free Texas (they have all been appointed to government jobs in DC) and renew their opposition to global warning since it is melting all the ice for their drinks. Cheney suggests bombing the Polar ice Cap to make it more ice cube size to help the Bush daughters get the ice into small enough pieces for their martini glasses. Michael Yarbrough and I play the Eminem album with the lines "fuck you Lynn Cheney" and the line about Cheney's heart problems, and Dick Cheney, so scared by Eminem, retreats to his hidden lair under the Appalachian mountains never to be seen again until the third Lord of the Rings movie, where he is defeated by Frodo . Lori appoints Paul as director of homeland security and he gets into such verbal battles with non American terrorists that no one has time for terrorism anymore, just one nasty email after another. Kakki makes martinis for all American terrorists, martinis being so good, they get too drunk for terrorist acts. And the moon is in the 7th house, Jupiter aligns with Mars, Joni speaks to a joint session of Congress and made SIQUOMB of all America, which really pisses off Judy Collins and Abril Lavigne and Alanis Morrasette, but they are in the minority. Les Irvin and Wally Breeze share Nobel Peace Prize for bringing all these forces together. The White House is painted pink and is now a boutique and a big yellow taxi takes President Lori all over the world where she proclaims love and the JMDL to everyone. All the money saved by having no need for war anymore goes to medical research. That is what happens next. It says so in Sunday's sermon. Vince ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2002 23:45:38 -0700 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: Very unusual, intense weekend/ strangest performance ever... (njc) Last weekend I attended the 14th annual Georgia Reunion and Goodtime Boogie which I had not been to in two years. All in all, it was a very intense and powerful weekend and while not the same as jonifest(what is...)it was highly emotional and spiritual, a gathering of like minded people creating a bohemian village on some beautiful private land in the Georgia mountains. I don't know exactly how many people came but I know there were several hundred. I stayed at the Dew Drop Inn, a site some of my friends have had for several years. People create fairly elaborate camp sites with candles, christmas lights, tye dyes everywhere. At night everything seems incredibly beautiful like some kind of fairytale village in the middle of the woods. There were even a few women with fairy wings flittering down the trails into the night. I had been a little unsure about going as I had missed two years but as soon as I was there for a little while, it seemed as if no time had gone by. Whatever negative elements I had experienced before seemed to be virtually nonexistant. I felt right at home. On Saturday, I had planned to play up on the stage though there was no exact schedule. I sort of milled about and wandered around, hung at the campsite. Eventually, I went down to the stage where there was a girl named Jaime playing, who oddly enough, was from Asheville. I just sort of hung around the stage listening to her sing. Basically, if you want to play you just sort of have to hang around the stage and take it over, just go up and start singing. After she was done someone played a couple of songs on the piano and then I mentioned that I would like to play. I had planned on playing "Terrapin Station" and asked my friend Brian Hillman(formerly of Deep Blue Sun) to sit in with me on guitar. I could have played later in the day but I felt an urgent need to go up and play now. It just seemed like it was the right time. Brian wanted to warm up on a couple of things so I played "Bertha" and "Queen Jane Approximately". Somewhere in between, someone came up to the stage and said there was an emergency and they needed so and so immediately. I called her name over the mike and didn't think a whole lot of it. We then played Terrapin with just piano and guitar. Of course, we had not practiced before hand but I thought it went pretty well. I then switched over to guitar which I found to be alot easier to gell with the other guitar. We proceeded to play JAckaroe, Boomerang Love, Cassidy, and Birdsong. I felt an unusual surge of energy this whole set, as if I was being carried along by something other than myself. At that point, someone came up and said that a friend, Steve, who had just arrived there shortly before, had just had a heart attack and was on the way to the hospital. I stopped playing for several minutes, unsure whether to go on but then played "Box of Rain" sending it out to Steve, followed by "Real World" and finishing with "Eyes of the World." At that point Danny(one of the founders of the boogie) came up to the stage and began talking at which point I left the area and went back to the campsite. I later heard wafts of an Irish melody on the piano, coming through the woods. I found out later that someone was playing it for Steve and that he had passed away almost immediately after his heart attack. So somewhere in the first several minutes of my set, he passed away, only a few hundred yards away. I don't know how it happened that we were up on the stage playing through all if this, with no knowledge of what was going on but reflecting upon it, I am glad that we were. I will never look at any of these songs the same way ever again, their meaning so intensified, the close connection of life to death so clear and vivid...Cassidy was written upon the death of Jack Cassady and the birth of Cassidy Law and Birdsong was written as a memorial to Janis Joplin. It is something I will wonder about the rest of my life. Though his death did bring everyone down somewhat, in another way it really brought everyone even closer together and the weekend became a giant memorial to Steve, a celebration of his life. Somehow, it seemed so natural to pass into the other world. Though very, very tragic... I went to a folk festival last year, and yes, I noticed quite alot of lesbians in the audience (and no lesbian performers on the bill that I was aware of). The vibe was relaxed and quite nice. I think part of the appeal of the folk scene is, as someone in the article mentioned, the fostering of an environment where you can just be who you are. Listen to Elton's "11/17/70" when he was a road warrior, singing every night. Compare to "Caribou" when he was getting fat and happy. Happy & homebound singers are not necessarily at the top of their game. Just my observation as a listener. I had a little bit more control when I was singing during a 30 minute commute each way and talking on the phone all day, doing a help desk job. I'll never have a fine singing instrument like Eminem though. Speaking of finding the right material, I like Marcel Deste's new disc cause he's selected some upbeat, child-like songs that really match his tone and multi-tracked production. Fun. Some really nice harmony parts in places too! He has some really good ideas. np: "Irene" by our own Kate Bennett, from my autographed copy of her "Over The Moon" CD. Priced to own. :) Is it gauche to promote my friends to my friends? Naw..... Jim ps, I don't need an emoticon for the Eminem line, right? Don't get mad Kakki, but I'm cross-posting this to the big list. Okay? > From: kakki [mailto:kakkib@vzavenue.net] > When I had a real voice (and not the memory in my head!)
