Proceeds to his family. Performers will include Sting, Brian Wilson, Don Henley, John Mellencamp, Jimmy Buffet, Sheryl Crow (with James Taylot and Billy Joel scheduled to sub in Boston for Wilson and Buffet). White wrote a bio recently of JT ("Long Ago and Far away""). Lustig described the bow-tied White as a writer with a conscience who focused on the creative process, who spoke out against gangsta rap and record industry injustices, and in support of the RAC. His friend Mitch Glazer says he received phone calls from JT, Crow, Henley and Mellencamp, asking to help. One idea reportedly being considered is to read selected passages written by White about the artists at the concerts. For an insight into his views about Joni, I refer you one of the above featured articles (link repeated below). A quote from it: In the act of exploring these and other related notions, Mitchell would create an inspiring, ten-song series of musical dialogues and playlets that comprise this autumn's "Turbulent Indigo" (Reprise, Due October 25), one of the most commanding statements of a peerless, seventeen-album career that has itself questioned most accepted precepts in popular music. "The arts are important part of cultural justice," says Mitchell, "and truth and beauty are the essence of their greatness, so artists, so artists have a big responsibility in every era to probe the rules by which we live, inquiring whether they serve us well." He was a pretty decent writer, and if he was careful with his words, then his choice of "peerless" is significant. In presenting the Billboard 'Century Award' to JM in 1995, he is reported in the Karen O'Brien bio of Joni as having said: "The sole aim of the award is to acknowledge the uncommon excellence of one artist's still unfolding body of work... the award focuses on those singular musicians who have not been accorded the degree of serious homage their achievements deserve. We can think of no artist more deserving than Joni Mitchell..... in folk and blues, in jazz, in world music, and in every alternative that one must find to arrive at rock and roll, she has taken humanity's most noble strivings and made them intimate for each of us." So I wonder (assuming Joni is not part of this concert): 1. She did not offer ? 2. She was not asked (so she did not offer) ? 3. She was asked, but declined ? 4. She offered but was rejected ? Any guesses or other insights ? I do not know what other baggage might affect her history with White, but it seems to me that this would have been a worthy enough excuse for her to get involved for a change. Unless (4) was the case, I would like to see her try to get on the bill, even at this late date. > http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/940827bb.cfm Bob S. I wish it had been a week instead of just a weekend, but the weekend was a great improvement over just one day. I got a chance to get to know some people better - unfortunately missed a few people, though. If I had been less busy attending workshops and playing music, I might have gotten to talk to everyone who was there. I remember the first person I saw when I arrived was Chuck E. It was such a relief to see him, because I wondered how soon I'd have a guitar. He brought me two guitars (!) to choose from for the weekend, his neighbor's Guild, and his own precious Thompson. I actually used both of them Friday night for Jenny's set so that I wouldn't have to retune between songs, but for the remainder of the weekend I held on to Chuck's beautiful Thompson. He told me it was made by a man named Thompson who lives in BC who makes only 100 or so guitars in a year. What a great guitar! Such a sweet sound and so finely crafted! I am very grateful to Chuck for entrusting it to me for the whole weekend. I hope I didn't put any dings in it (I really tried hard to be careful)! Friday night started with a recording of Anne Sandstrom singing one of her beautiful songs and we were able to join in on the chorus which was about everyone singing together. Very moving. I wish she could have attended the fest. You were very missed, Anne! I hope you are doing well and that we'll hear from you before too long. All of the performances were really fantstic. It was wonderful to see each person get up on the stage and perform, especially those who had only performed a few times or never before. And the audience is the best audience any performer could ever hope for, because they listen and they are appreciative of everyone. It did a lot for my confidence to be able to perform for such a crowd. Walt Breen can play the piano really well and he has a deep rich voice that made me feel safe and peaceful. Les Ross has this really quiet quality when he sings and plays his guitar - he has a strong voice, but somehow he makes it seem quiet, like you're sitting with him in a beautiful forest with sunbeams coming down thru the trees. His guitar playing is gorgeous. Jenny just blew me away with her acapella arrangement of Urge For Going - I can't WAIT for the CDs so that I can put that track on replay for a few days! Yael Harlap has such purity in her voice and music - her heart really comes through when she sings and I enjoyed her set very much. Victor has so many beautiful original songs. I hope he will do a new CD soon! Chuck I love your piano playing - wish I could play like that! Hope you'll do some dulcimer tunes for us someday, though - sorry that there wasn't a space for that this year! Except it was great to hear you play in the workshop!!! Kay Ashley - what can I say? You are fantastic - your songs have such unique melodies and chord changes. I was mesmerized during your set and am so glad that you brought those demo CDs so that I could listen to you on the drive to Boston. Especially love that third song. Oh, and please do something with that piano tune with the ethereal chords that I asked you about. Alison! What a great voice you have! Please consider a singing career! Sharon, I'm so glad you brought your accordion and I really enjoyed your set. You led us to believe that you were just a beginner, but it sure sounded perfect to me and really hard! How do you keep track of all those buttons???? Next time, I want you to show me how it all works. Donna, I loved your set! I love you! You have so much heart and I wish we could have talked more and I hope we'll get another chance someday. It was comforting to be around somebody who can cry as much as I can! More later. I am sure lots of folks will tell you how wonderful the Full Moon was, the food, the people, in gifted detail (better than I) so I would just like to touch on my personal highlights in streaming form (no particular order). First of all my heartfelt thanks to Ashara for the fifth time. This event fills me up and keeps me going for almost a year. I think you ought to consider doing it twice a year. Heeee heee heee! Your efforts are forever appreciated. Being able to get Jack Nielson up there with me was so amazing and he had such a good time playing with other folks and listening to the music and connecting with old "buddies" from the New Orleans fest. Hooking up and hanging out with my old traveling traveling traveling Buds Alison and Julius and then getting to stay with Kay in Brooklyn (thanks so much Kay and I love Holy Man tooooo, hope you didn't mind me singing along) and hanging with Patrick and some my other pals in NYC. Great sushi place too Alison! One of the best parts of this year was getting to hear so many people who have come up but not done anything on stage. Please more of you people get the feck up and play more. Captive audience duh!!!!! Bob Murphy you should just do a whole fecking hour of stand up and music. I dreamed you singing to me last night. You as Ethel Merman doing Joni Mitchell sends me over the top, but then when you had her doing White Rabbit and The Needle and The Damage Done, it sent me over the edge. Hanging out with you down down down at the pool garage was so much fun and the music jams there were as powerful as ever thanks to the late night krewe. BTW Smurph I would love to produce your alter egos tribute to music. With feature performances by Kay Ashley and Susan Guzzi AND Patrick Leader. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! The musical performances every night were just SO brilliant. I was driven to tears by so many people this year. That damn Jack Neilson made me cry with his Wedding Song for Mags and Brei (actually called "Shine On Our Love") and I have had that song beat into my head for the last year during the production of his record. It just brought it all home when I saw Mags and Brei and so many other couples on the list. Bryan Thomas doing A Case of You was another one that just opened the flood gates. Bry you kill me man and your playing gets better and better. Claudia's collaboration with John and also Marian and Hell's collaboration were just stunning between lyricists and musician and then performer. WoW! Perhaps the best musical moment for me was Nikki playing and singing her ass off (at the same time) on stage. You go girlfriend!! A VERY close second place goes to watching Jack sing with Christina and Henning. Also made pretty weepy. Meeting so many new people and putting faces with the names. The only bad part for me is the time factor. I end up spending all my time with friends from past fests or the musicians or the drunks (not necessarily in that order). A note to all JoniFest newbies-Hang out late will sleep when we're dead! The most fun with my clothes on category was having the honour of playing for the folks who asked me to play for them. Thank you so much Sherelle, Yael, Alison, Donna, and Nikki (with special thanks to Jenny Goodspeed for asking me to work with the acapella group). It's always such a gas playing with the Divine Chuck E on keys and OHMYGAWD Roberto and Chris and Les and Jeff thanks so much for playing with me on my set. It is such a gas for me to play with such gifted musicians (I think next year we should also play with a drummer). Other amazing musical highlights this year were: Les Ross (just wonderful and if I were gay.. Well nevermind), Jack Neilson DUH!, Marian Russell, Claudia (as always what a songwriter beautiful spirit that just spills out of her and surrounds you), Sue Mc (the legend wow we are so blessed to have you and thanks for all your efforts and hard work), Jenny Goodspeed (I was transported by your set. Your playing and everything are growing and blooming out loud), Susan Guzzi (what a freaking joy to hear and feel your power), Giselle YOU BITCH!!! just you wait till I get up on the stage the next time I am gonna roast your ass, but good. Thanks so much for the reverse heckling feel free to use me any time for the BUTT of your jokes. If your jokes were half as good as your playing and singing...and your version of Magdalene Laundries was just off the hook. And after all that teasing (which really did make me laugh so hard) you made me have a big boo hoo as well.) Thanks for the emotional roller coaster ride! Pearl it was a joy to see you get up and I enjoyed your set so much. As I did everyone's. There were some amazing moments from everyone all three nights. I smoked half cigarettes (mostly inside that back room) so I wouldn't miss anything (and also to not get wet the first two nights which is WHY you have a cold Alison!!!!! I hardly talked to anyone to not miss any of the music. BTW Patti W (Thanks for the pick of which I found a few more of the floor) your version of Hejira was mind-blowing and I may just never play that song again thanks to you. Christina and Henning I see nothing but good stuff for you guys. Best of luck with the record! What a voice and NOT so hard on the eyes either. Thanks so much to Kate and Jeff for organizing the song circles every night (especially after stage managing all nights). The was some of the most amazing stuff I hope they at least come out on the video tape (thanks Ashara again) so we can re-live some of that stuff. I was gonna try and see what I got on tape (which was not as complete as last year, but I am pretty sure Les Irvin was on the ball). There was so much other stuff that filled me with joy but I would gush forever. Thank you all so much for all of your support, friendship, love, music, and caring. I reserve the right to write a follow up to this stream when I decompress a bit more and the streaming starts happening again, which will include my trip to Woodstock, under age girls in bars, self medication, and some other of the after hours memorabilia. Till then I bid you all a fond good night and pleasant dreams. Huge BIG BLACK BEAR HUGS TO ALL!!!! Love Michael Paz P.S. Will someone please make sure to call Full Moon and send someone down to the garage/pool table area and tell Victor the fest is over and he can stop playing. Love ya man, but you won this year. I heard you playing long after the sun came up and was forced to my bed. I remember when you passed out on the floor at Ashara's the first year I met you. All without the help of drugs. Unreal, basically. Amazing, wonderful, fantastic, and other superlatives that I think Lama beat me to. I was so amazed at how old friendships picked up where they left off a year ago, and new ones were quickly formed. The music this year was simply stunning. One thing that benefited us all, I think, was having three nights of performance with some great management by people such as Jeff. And wow - I thought we were overburdened with talent last year, but this was something else. Sherelle, Jack Neilson (sp?), Brian Thomas, Christina Fris-Neilsen (sp?). Good lord, where were you all hiding until now??? And everyone was fantastic in their own way, each bringing something new and interesting to the occasion. And the Ethel Mermans with their passport smiles had me gasping for breath. Highlights? Many. A few that stuck out for me were getting to play with some truly talented people. I feel blessed to have been able to do so. Things that stick in my mind are:- "Edith and the Kingpin" with Sherelle and Paz "Sex Kills" with Paz "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" with Les Ross and Christina Above all, playing a kicking version of Woodstock with Kate Bennett, Jeff Bisch and Chuck E to finish off the last night of performance was amazing. What a way to draw to a close. Monday night was cool too: at the tapas bar in NYC with Patrick, Alison E, Hennning, Christina, Les and Patrick's sister and a friend of Alison's. Great time. Alison, I'll explain about the underwear sometime. On another note, I had so much Jonifest synchronicity on the way home - it was amazing. There was the guy from Belfast in the bar at JFK. He'd heard of Kate Bennett from his brother in the US. The bass player a few rows back from me on the plane: he also had heard of Kate, and his father had played with Jaco in the early eighties. Like, ommagawd! The german guy sitting next to me, who had bought two Joni albums in their original packaging on vinyl in a NYC thrift store. The cost? $3. I pointed all these people at www.jmdl.com, so there may be some new arrivals. I'll be accepting an ambassadorship fee :) My photos are up on www.hatstand.org/gallery. It truly felt like we were in a 'bubble' (who said that?) of warmth and generosity and tolerance and giving and friendship, and of course, song! I don't remember any Biblical mention of Adam and Eve and the kids jamming in Eden, and I don't know on exactly which day of Creation the guitar was created, but the extent to which these above qualities abounded at the Fest are making it VERY hard for me to get back to life as usual. I don't even want to pick up the newspaper ....readin the news, and it sure looks bad. (Except I think some lost Orca whale made it home to the pod recently...) All this lifted my heart. Thank you Ashara, and everyone there, or not there but rooting or pining (we missed you). Full Moon will be talking about THAT for some time to come. (It was a superb choice of venue) They should probably build another couple of cabins for next year (and with the bar tabs from the weekend, they probably could!) It's a ggod thing the shamans cancelled because with all that songpower we woulda KICKED THEIR BUTTS, here, there, and astrally! So I made it back to the pod, a least for a few days. Some of us got together at Ric's last night (Ashara, Maggie, Roberto, Heather, (queen of nametags and pasta), and my Barbara, and with all of Ric's incredible Native American art around us I was thinking about a Hopi creation story where, you know, the world is getting created by the GS (great spirit) and the first stage was creating twins, who were singers. They sang two tones and between them, the harmony created all matter, all the earth. So in this creation story, sound preceded substance. (I think there may even be pretty good recent physics that could be comfortable with that...) The sounds that went down last weekend and the people channeling them (Ethel included) created real substantial MAGIC. Maybe we turned back the doomsday clock a whole couple of minutes... Ashara asked us about personal high points, and so going on to mention mention only a few individual performances, let me just say that my high points were all about the HARMONY, literally and figuratively. That, and almost being made a honorary lesbian. When Henning and Christina were ending with an amazing 'Conversation' they had 75 crazies going 'doot-doo-doot' so loud it drowned out the PA. Ashara did Shower the People and Jenny and I had worked out a really nice three part harmony, but in the moment the whole room lit up with voices. And on and on... Well, you'll see. Roberto and I were saying that most of the performances were pro quality, or, say, better than almost all of 'Joni's Jazz' - you'll have you own faves but it was just uniformly-amazingly-fantastic. If I were an A&R guy from Sony with carte blanche I would have been handing out contracts left and right. My regret was that there just wasn't enough time to connect with everyone, in a deep enough way. Next Year? The good news is that Ashara is totally nuts and she's already working on that! Eveybody be well, and see you later. More than this I will not ask, Faced with mysteries dark and vast, Statements just seem vain at last..." Robert Hunter It really does seem that there is no way to put into words what took place this year. Something so rare, so vast, so powerful, so beautiful it is beyond simple words. And I completely did not see this coming, and yet on another level, it makes complete sense. I think it was in the beginning of the year that Jody and I decided to have the Terrapin Station tent. But it wasn't until the summer that I found out who Maggie's brother is and that he had written a book about Jerry Garcia. I had already started thinking about playing Terrapin Station as part of my set but hadn't finalized anything but after I learned that it started to make complete sense. And when I looked at the fire imagery in JotMS, and saw how similiar it was to Terrapin, I thought it would be really interesting to play these two songs together. I really feel that they both get to the heart of what we experienced this weekend. "Which of you, to gain me tell, Will risk uncertain pains of hell, I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance" Robert Hunter "You've got to shake your fists at lightning, You've got to roar like forest fire, You've got to shine your light like blazes all across the sky" Joni Mitchell I think we did take that chance this weekend, and if there was some way to measure the energy level and the love that was experienced, it completely shot off the map. We have arrived at Terrapin Station....with no question, we are there. By Saturday night, whatever was in the air was so thick you could have sliced it with a knife. I could really feel the energy level building up in momentum. And building and building...from the beginning to the very end there was no weak moment. And despite what my wicked stepbrother Michael may say, I have to give all the credit to everyone who came to the pool hall and joined in on a wild Dionysian drunken musical train out of hell, certainly on its way to heaven. I was especially glad to see people like Les and Claude who I don't remember being in the late night crew before. And everyone who joined in on harmonies just really blew me away. My brother Michael Paz "Johnson" (heeeheee...one of two people given honorary Johnson status the other being John Van Tiel "Johnson") kept pulling all these songs out of his hat and I kept responding, and there was song after song, and you know it really felt like we were moving, sometimes veering off the tracks at a deathly speed and then getting back on course. A high point for me was when we sang "Ripple" into "Brokedown Palace", two of my favorite songs ever written...the harmonies were just breathtaking, really...Julius I think you really hit onto something with your accapella idea and it completely came into fruition. That's what this year feels like...a culmination of many things that began last year and even earlier than last year, coming together to become one. Last year we had the Ganga Line on one end of the house and at the other end, the silent living room but this year, both came together and became stronger. Another thing that I think really put everything into focus, was celebrating the union of Mags and Brei...that seemed to make everything seem even more special. Everyone seemed to come together. I really have to stop...I've been writing madly in my journal ever since I've gotten home...and I had planned on getting alot done tonight but the time is just skating away. love, Victor ps. Jody and I created a new form of communication that uses only laughter (I think I did more laughing this weekend than speaking. pps. It was about 7:00 in the morning on Saturday. I was standing by the pond with Jody, Rose, and Jim and started singing to the duck(who I think should be made an honorary JMDL'r)...and Rose said, in her New Jersey accent, "Victor, you've lost your fucking mind!" If this is PhotoIsland, I've got an account with them too and I got an e-mail just today to say they've just put some restrictions on the number of "visitors" you can have to your account each day - you're only allowed four. I suppose for most purposes, that would be enough - but not for the jmdl. Cripes, their timing was perfect, wasn't it. I wonder if it would make any sense to set up some mirror accounts to take care of that? ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! how cool is that on top of all the other million details you had to do... i know jeff & i got lots of thanks for doing the stage managing but i must confess it was a very easy job...EVERYONE had their act so together that the whole thing ran so smoothly with no downtime between sets...so all of you who performed deserve a BIG THANK YOU for being so on top of it & extremely professional... in addition, there are 2 folks who really deserve a multitude of thanks for making the stage performances go so well (aside from our wonderful sound man, john, i think was his name?)...that is paz & chuck e who brought lots of equipment & made sure it was working & that everyone who got up on stage had everything they needed...paz & chuck e thank you SO much for making our job so easy!!!! it is impossible to list all of the great performances that we were privileged to witness...suffice it to say that i was really blown away as everyone who performed as so many have already attested to...those of you who were not there really ought to get copies of the video when they are available & hopefully you will understand... there were many spontaneous standing ovations which were so well deserved! special thanks to the musicians who played with me - les, chris, chuck e.... you all are so talented...it was such a joyous pleasure to have you helping me out! it was wonderful to get the chance to do a songwriting workshop & to everyone who participated thank you thank you!!!! it was such a joy to hear all of your songs & everyone's astute observations...joni influenced songwriters sure write some amazing songs!!!!!! oh, another regret- i never made it to any of the other workshops...i'd planned to go to all of them but somehow needed to eat & have some downtime in between all of the activity...the time definately went by way to fast to fit everything in.... it was wonderful to get the chance to connect with so many folks in bits & pieces, some more than others...there were many who i kept meaning to connect with for a bit but before i knew it, time had run out...hopefully next year everyone will return & more of you who were not able to make it this year will realize that it is something not to be missed! in a way i really feel like i connected with each one of you as part of the whole experience, & also getting to hear you in your performances both formal & informal... i was so happy to see so many folks get up on stage who did not do so last year...each & every performance was so moving in its own special way... the song circles were soooooooooooooooooooooooo wonderful! thank you thank you thank you all for participating & making it so magical! it was so wonderful to pick up with those who i had met last year & to meet new friends this year...it was really a special treat to have 2 special jmdlers members join us- marian & sue who have done so much work on the guitar site of the jmdl...getting to meet & hear you both was a major highlight... oh but there were sooo many higlights it would take me 3 more days to list them all...so i won't even try, however i must mention something that no one has mentioned yet- bob mueller you ROCK on drums! i could not believe how you kept up that wipeout bongo beat for so long! the crowd was on their feet dancing!!!! the day after----i had a mission to find big pink (the band house)...found out from the owner of full moon that it was in saugerties where we were visiting family before & after the fest...i couldn't get any exact directions out of either of the full moon folks who knew where it was...but i was able to find the street name & photo from a quick google search & so jeff & i took off to find it before our flight left late tuesday out of albany...we were really really close & drove around the neighborhood for about an hour or so...but even though we found the street where it was on the map we had...we could not find the actual street!!! twice we asked some folks out in their yards (for the street not for big pink) & they pointed us in the direction with some vague idea of where it should be but we never found it...both jeff & i suspect that folks have agreed not to help anyone who may be searching for this street...knowing what they must be looking for...but i know we were within a mile of the place & it was frustrating to run out of time before we find it...i'm doing my research & next year i will find it!!!!!
