I arrived with Patti Witten on Saturday afternoon. Alas, we could only join the festers for one day because of prior commitments (Cornell Orientation and Patti had several other gigs this weekend). I just can't tell you how happy I am to have finally met face to face people I feel I've been close friends with for years. Number one, Les Irvin, oh my god how long we've been friends and to finally be able to talk and hang out together. Also my good friends, Marian Russell, Mary Pitassi, Jim Lamma, Bob Meuller, the PAZ!, kay ashley, kate bennett, SHERELLE SMITH...on and on (sorry if I didn't mention you all). I'm going to cut to the chase and tell you that the performances on Saturday night were amazing. Patti and I opened the night, and that was good because I got to relax and watch a lot of amazing performances. If you can get a hold of the cds when they come out, you will be amazed. I was also very very happy that most of the singer/songwriters played their own compositions. Sherelle Smith was Absolutely Amazing!!! Her two original songs were beautiful and a lot of fun but her rendition of Edith and the Kingpin had the whole place mesmerized. Standing O for Sherelle and she deserved it. YEAHHHHH!!! Claudia San Soucie played a beautiful set of originals and That Song About the Midway and her best friend John Van Tiel sang a very beautiful song with the help of Paz, Claudia and Chuck E. Great great music. Christina and Henning from across the sea did a beautiful set of Joni (Michael from Mountains, Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, Sunny Sunday and Conversation) Christina's voice is like a bell and Henning played wonderfully. What a treat, also meeting and talking with them was also quite a gift for me. Then after a great raffle, my dear friend Marian Russell played such an amazing set of originals, plus a wonderful heartbreaking version of Cherokee Louise. I must say her song about the Rodeo just blew me and Patti away and we talked about that song on the way home to Ithaca. VERY VERY GOOD MARIAN!!! I also very much enjoyed Bryan Thomas' set. He does the most amazing version of Black Crow...the different style and originality of his music continued to keep the night at a very high level of excellence. But alas again, the clock struck midnight, and like the fabled cindergirl I had to rush home. The hardest decision I had to make was do I say good bye to everyone in the room or just leave and make my getaway without disturbing the mood, so that's what I intended to do, but I had to smash my guitar into John Van Tiel's wine glass and make quite a commotion before I left. John, I owe you a drink!!! I could go on and on. It was too short for me but the time I spent at Jonifest 2002 was a time I won't forget soon. Oh no, I forgot my commemorative coffee cup! If anyone found it, please let me know! :-) take care, Sue - -- ____________________ /____________________\ ||-------------------|| || Sue McNamara || || sem8@cornell.edu || ||___________________|| || O etch-a-sketch O || \___________________/ "It's all a dream she has awake" - Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 10:15:27 EDT From: SMC1254@aol.com Subject: Re: paprica plains What about when the band plugs in again - Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 10:32:22 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Fest report Thank you, Sue Mac! Bob could be right. Doesn't Joni have some Irish blood? My first name is really Liam (says so on the birthcert and passport!), but have never ever been called that. Garret is my middle name. My parents had wanted to call me Dylan (after Bob believe it or not) and decided then to call me Garret (after a politican) at the last minute. The priest didn't like the name and wouldn't let them (he was probably anti Fine Gael; but then so were my parents and still are 21 years later), citing the fact that it isn't a saints name. He conceded to allow them call me Liam Garret as liam sounds more Irish and is my fathers name:) Furthermore, a friend of mine, Rory, is actually Cormac Rory; Anto is actually Paul Anthony (he was called Paul Anthony until his late teenage years when he began to object); Trish is really Mary Patricia; Noely is really Peter Noel. So there you have it, in Ireland we tend to use middle names quite commonly (and when parents get very serious they always use the double barrell "Louise Mary" etc.) GARRET ps- *when* i publish a book my pen name is Liam Martin (martin being my mothers maiden name: ) np- Eddi Reader "patience of angels"- saw her live last week here in Dublin and am utterly converted; she's wonderful. - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 11:54:00 -0400 From: Engwall57@aol.com Subject: Joni in literature I was pleasantly surprised to come across a Joni mention when I picked up a book by Carl Hiaasen for summer reading. The book is "Lucky You." The protagonist is explaining why she wants to use her lottery winnings to purchase a 40 acre parcel of virgin land. She says that developers want to buy the land to build "a shopping center and a parking lot, just like in the Joni Mitchell song." Most likely a reference to BYT. I was further pleased this weekend when I was in a wine store and heard, faintly, Joni's voice coming over the loudspeaker. She was singing a song I am unfamiliar with - it sounded like a musical cousin to "The Only Joy in Town." I figure it must be from TI, since I have not bought that or heard the entire CD at this point. I probably will buy it now, because this song sounded beautiful. Les - - ----------------------- Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light The Definitive Biography By Karen OBrien Fully updated and published on 5th September 2002, priced: #9.99 Uncompromising and iconoclastic, Joni Mitchell confounded expectations at every turn. Restlessly innovative her music evolved from deeply-personal folk stylings into pop, jazz, avant-garde and even world music. Mitchell is one of the worlds most influential recording artists, and a role model for a generation of singer/songwriters from Sheryl Crow and Elvis Costello to Beck and David Gray. Intelligently told and with an unrivalled degree of access, Shadows and Light is the story of a true rock n roll icon. Canadian-born Joni Mitchell began her career as a folk singer/songwriter in the mid-1960s. Championed by the Byrds David Crosby, she quickly threw herself into the Bohemian scene in New York and later Los Angeles. Her musical reputation grew steadily, and in the late sixties and early seventies she enjoyed international success with songs including Chelsea Morning and Big Yellow Taxi, and critically acclaimed albums including the landmark Blue and the jazz-influenced Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Mitchell has continued to produce both highly-regarded and adventurous music throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and into the new century, and her musical creativity has been matched by her passion for the visual arts. Her idiosyncratic paintings and photography have been exhibited to acclaim in Canada, the United States, Japan and the UK. This definitive biography includes first hand interviews with those closest to her: friends, musicians, critics and radio DJs, including Suzanne Vega, Larry Klein, Graham Nash, Tom Rush, Elliot Roberts and Richard Thompson. Covering Mitchells visual art as well as her music, the book includes fascinating previously unpublished correspondence between Mitchell and modernist painter Georgia OKeeffe. Published to critical acclaim in October 2001, Shadows and Light has been fully updated and includes new interviews with Jonis first husband, Chuck, as well as Jonis creative reaction to the events of September 11th. Broad in scope and full of detail, this is the remarkable story of the life and loves of an extraordinary and complex artist. Karen OBrien is a music journalist and a BBC World Service radio news editor who has also written and broadcast widely on the arts. Karens previous book, Hymn to Her, a collection of writings on women musicians was published by Virago in 1995. She is a New Zealander by birth and Londoner by choice. - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 13:46:26 -0400 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: "The Definitive Biography" reissued with new content > I just received this press release about the second > printing of Karen > O'Brien's book. Even top Republican leaders are publicly questioning a war: Brent Scowcroft, the former National Security Advisor, says a U.S. invasion of Iraq "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and, thus, destroy the war on terrorism." He also says "there is scant evidence to tie Saddam to terrorist organizations, and even less to the Sept. 11 attacks." Kissinger also says, "American military intervention in Iraq would be supported only grudgingly, if at all, by most European allies." Dick Armey, the House Majority Leader (R-TX-26), says, "I don't believe that America will justifiably make an unprovoked attack on another nation. I am really getting curious about this > Jonifest deal..sounds kinda like Wavy Gravy camp for grown ups????....Pearl Funny you should mention him & Camp Winnarainbow as I was just there on Saturday, and saw the kids put on their awesomely cool 'last day of camp' show. All 100 kids sang some songs at the end, finishing with "Imagine". I've interviewed Wavy a couple of times, but didn't know he had a past w/Joni, or I woulda asked! We of course stopped at Atty May's and popped in to say hello. She was a little bit busy and fixing to head home pretty soon but we were able to talk to her for a few minutes, tell her about the wonderful fest that took place, and also show her the lyrics to "Parsonage Lane" which she enjoyed reading. It was very strange and surreal though to be there without anyone else around. It was so quiet, the kitchen was closed, May was engrossed in paper work, the bar was empty. But in a way, that just reinforced what a wonderful weekend we had at Full Moon. I still feel a strong presence on the island and we were glad to be able to end our journey there, lost in thought of the past, present, and future to come. But here's the rude jolt back to reality...we had walked over to the beach to see the water and were walking back, just getting ready to cross the street, walked into the cross walk and saw a big red pickup truck in the crosswalk driving towards us...now that was weird enough in itself(if you've seen the crosswalks there you know they are fairly wide white lines, about the width of a car...)...and it was a bit of a shock to start walking across the street in what is supposed to be a crosswalk for pedestrians and see a truck coming towards you, completely inside the lines...now there was another truck that had turned the corner a moment before and about 8 seconds after we saw this truck coming towards us, a guy in the other truck stuck out his head and said, "Hey, that's a crosswalk!!!" and we just lost it, and started bursting out in uncontrollable laughter( which is not too surprising considering Jody and I had about 6 hours of sleep the whole weekend)...we were just losing it, bawling out hysterically when the guy in the first truck, which had turned around out of the crosswalk after hesitating for a moment, stuck his head of the window and said, quote endquote " Hey fucking jerk, what are you a fucking asshole...don't you have a fucking car, fucking jerk!!!" to which I said with a completely straight face in a serious tone "We walked here from New York." He seemed to pause a minute, and said "Well, why don't you go back."(with much less fervor I thought) and I said "Okay we will..." and he drove off. I hope I did an adequate job in describing this as we thought it was truly bizzarre and have been laughing about it all night. We were wondering whether sleep deprivation made this scene even funnier than it would have been otherwise, and that perhaps this guy thought we were completely off our rockers...I guess I can't really answer that question but anway, what a strange way to enter back into the other reality. Thanks to everyone for a truly amazing weekend that there are really no words to describe.... Victor and Jody, still coming down off of this incredible high ps. working on project B which is top secret... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 18:59:46 -0700 From: "Lori in MD" Subject: Home safely (NJC) Just a quick note to say I arrived safely at home around 6 pm after seeing Cindy & Gisele off at BWI airport. Hope y'all got our note on the message board ... sorry for leaving without see ya laters but we had to go early to pick up my car from the repair shop in Milford PA, and for some strange reason no one else was awake!?! (Our wonderful cabin mates, Susan G and Mary P, did manage to stand up for a hug before returning to dreamland.) It was a great fest, the best!!! Thank you Ashara and others (you know who you are) for everything. More manana ... If I had to dream of the *perfect* place to hold Jonifest, Full Moon is certainly it. Stephen, Walt, Smurf and I arrived mid-afternoon on Thursday. After getting settled into our simple but comfortable rooms, we had dinner with the other 25 or so people that came for the Thursday night festivities. The Mexican style dinner was wonderful, filled with very fresh vegetables, chicken, salsa, warm tortillas, and delicious tasting spices. Dessert was a warm chocolate brownie drizzled with chocolate. Every meal at Full Moon was really tasty! After dinner we all went up to the Performance Space, which has a stage with a full sound system, chairs and tables, a bar, and a porch in the back for the (cough, cough) smokers. (Yuck!) :-) Several people performed including Christina and Henning from Denmark, Claud, and Gregg Cagno, who came all the way for Thursday night only- just to play Millworker for my birthday. All the music was absolutely wonderful, and it was a very relaxing, mellow, music-filled evening. Everyone else staggered in on Friday, and more of the same- good food, good music, good friends. The next 2 days were similar, adding workshops during the days and lots of connecting with friends new and old. The music went on from 9AM until the wee hours of the next morning, with barely a 2 hour break in between. The song circles after the scheduled performances were absolutely magical. There was over 16 or 18 HOURS of video tape rolling, so if you missed it, you will be able to relive almost the entire weekend! On a personal note, it was the VERY best ever Jonifest for me. I was *finally* able to relax for the first time ever, and really enjoy all the performances, as well as make much deeper connections with people. ;-) Watch for the dates for Jonifest 2003 as soon as I get caught up on a bit of sleep. (That will take a loooooooooooooong while!) LOL!! Many hugs, A very tired but VERY happy Ashara ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 23:33:46 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: NJC Made it back... Wow. More later.
