Many things have been said of this woman (reincarnation of Piaf, Dietrich and Lenya) but she has her own distinctiveness -- she writes, paints and acts. Her City of Strangers album is one of a kind -- a paean to the delicious allure of being new in a strange country, of being abandoned and of the disillusionment that result. Her other albums are just as good, notably ILLUSIONS and BERLIN CABARET SONGS. She has a pop album in the 1980s called CRIMES OF THE HEART where she rendered Beth Nielsen Chapman's "That's The Easy Part" oh-so-convincingly. She also appeared in PRET A PORTER and COMABT DE FAUVES. joseph in manila > > --- Gordon Mackie wrote: >> Im just back from Barthelona (thanks to WtS for the >> phonetics) >> clutching a new dvd gem.. well new to me but its >> been out for 2 >> years) . Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and is pronounced 'bar-suh-lona' by Catalan speakers, at least by those in Barcelona itself. Other parts of Catalonia have their own dialects. >> The Thousand and one lives of Ute Lemper. She is fab. Anyone else agree?<< Yeah, me, lots. I've seen her here in bcn and have three of her compacts, two on which she sings Kurt Weill and the new one 'The Punishing Kiss' with songs by Cave, Costello, Waits and others. Also can't begin to understand why Joan Armatrading hasn't received the respect she should be due - I don't think this woman has ever done anything that wasn't worth listening to. ===== Catherine Toronto ______________________________________________________________________ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 11:53:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Denny Giovanetti Subject: Ute Lemper/Marianne Faithfull (njc) - --- Gordon Mackie wrote: >One of my favourite female singers talking about her work. . . >The name of this dvd? The Thousand and one lives of Ute Lemper. She >is fab. Anyone else agree? I bought her rendition of Weill's "The Seven Deadly Sins" a number of years ago--the beginning of an aural romance, to say the least! And her "Berlin Cabaret" recording is wonderful, very dramatic, yet not over the top a la Liza Minelli in "Cabaret"--Lemper smolders, like the world is truly in decay. (Actually, I think that her cover portrait from "The Seven Deadly Sins" just about says it all; sex, desire & death.) An interesting (and amazing) comparison is UL's performance with that of another blonde, Marianne Faithfull's--both dramatic, but despite the differences between Lemper's clarity and Faithfull's rasp, they're two great readings of the score. And MF is a truly fine cabaret artist. And, at the very least, playing them back-to-back is a way to rid the house of Pollyannaisms! I did hear Joni say in an interview that people DO NOT have the attention spans for long pieces. I don't if she was specifically referring to PP. I don't know if you saw her during her last tour; some of the new stuff she was working on, like Ludwigs Tune seem to be a little more experimental-and longer- than the BSN tunes. Paprika Plains was built around a long piano improvisation she did when she was really in the groove musically. It would be nice to hear her do more of that kind of thing, but I guess she goes wherever the muse leads. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:31:09 -0700 From: "gene mock" Subject: fess up!
