he's a physical education teacher, a professional swimmer and a sports referee. when he was young he dreamed he would be a DJ and a swimming teacher but somehow he ended up working in a bank, marrying a hausfrau and having four kids. he separated from his wife 10 years ago, and he's been on this side of life ever since, which has been quite a gain for my cause, if you know what i mean. he's so handsome and he has the staying power of a bolognese sauce stain. we've been living together since february 9. he's learned how to use the cool edit software and stuff and he's been mixing and doing the DJ magic ever since. we go swimming everyday. so my advice to you all beautiful people is: when your country's economy collapses and the political scene gets dreadfully dull, give your partners a new career, and it'll all be sunshine sunshine sunshine all around again. we've been buying bookshelves and plants and cleaning up the storage room too. since i can't recover the money i have in the bank in the lovely shape and color of dear cash, i have decided i'll slide my debit card away until it's thin and people can see my tits through it. it's already happening! alberto never had the money to pay for his divorce, so i'm giving him the lawyer's fees for his birthday. isn't that nice? as soon as the papers are ready, we'll have a simple religious ceremony presided by a friendly radical catholic priest, a reception for our friends, his mother, his children and my ex's, and then it's off to city hall to litigate litigate litigate until we get official recognition of our partnership, which can be done but might take some ass kicking. do his kids like me? they do. does his mother like me? she worships me. do i like being involved with man that was married for decades? i hate it, why should i lie. why would a man get married and have four children and take 44 years to realize he is ***different*** is beyond my grasp. in fact, i'd like to hear your opinions about this issue. is that common? do you know any similar cases? do admit: alberto is an anthropological freak. as i write, alberto is doing the laundry and playing the horrid stuff he downloads from the internet. one thing we have in common: we are both fond of vampire schedules. so things have a way of turning out nice in the end. i am as poor as the proverbial mouse, and i won't be able to travel abroad for god knows how long, but i am starting a family with a man i love and respect and life has never seemed so bright and thrilling. my only sorrow now is that i won't be able to be at the fest with all of you and that i will miss all the magic and glamour of those wonderful days in the company of my favorite people in the world. do sing a song for me when you're doing your sets. i need the harmony and the good luck. i am still unable to obtain a visa to travel to the states, which is infuriating after all the money i've spent shopping in every major american city. macy's must be lobbying for me this very minute, i am certain. in any case, i am constantly thinking of all you guys and gals at jonifest this year. i have had the most fantastic dreams about ashara and everybody. i've even seen the performances in my dreams! it's making me feel pretty psychotic to be honest, but then when have i not felt so. for god's sake, this is wally k speaking after all. as an aside, my voice is changing at last, so i'm dropping all the high notes and developing a chest voice. aren't you all shrieking at the news? do admit! i've been sounding like mercedes mccambridge as of late, and just as flat as lauren bacall. so all of you who may have thought you'd miss me at the fest think of what you'll be spared, my dears. i know there are tons of things i meant to tell you but my memory fails me. one last thing. i want to thank all the marvelously generous people that have written and called me during these months. i don't want to forget anyone so i won't mention any names. you've brightened my life in ways that you'll never imagine and you've made me feel i was still part of the world and not just an outcast in some hellish nightmare of a country. i never forget a good turn. i know i'll be able to repay you someday. so one final piece of advice: when life gives you lemons, throw them out and use your debit cards to buy yourselves a bottle of dom perignon. love, wally ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Aug 2002 11:05:53 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Honking=20Dave=20Shannon?= Subject: Joni and James Live I seem to remember a live recording of Joni and James Taylor -- is this available anywhere with a decent sound quality? Ugu Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2002 14:59:10 -0600 From: Les Irvin Subject: "Muslims stick up Washington" mystery solved? Joniphiles - I received an offlist message today from Evelyn Williams, who had a contribution for the JMIC Glossary Project (http://www.jmdl.com/glossary). She seems to have finally cleared up the "muslims stick up Washington" line from "Otis and Marlena". The DJRD album was released in December of 1977 and in the previous March of that year twelve Hanafi Muslims armed with shotguns and machetes stormed the District Building in Washington DC. The crisis lasted two days and resulted in one dead and dozens injured. I think Evelyn has solved the mystery of that line... thanks Evelyn! Here's a short article from the Washington Post that ran 25 years to the day later: - - ----------------- 25th Anniversary of Terror; March 9, 2002 It came with the suddenness of September 11: a well-coordinated terrorist attack in the heart of the nation's capital, 25 years ago today. Twelve gunmen, Hanafi Muslims heavily armed with shotguns and machetes, storming into the then District Building on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the offices of B'nai B'rith on Rhode Island Avenue NW and the Islamic Center on Massachusetts Avenue NW. Before the terrorist assault was brought to an end two days later, Maurice Williams, a 24-year-old reporter for WHUR-FM radio, had been shot dead, and dozens more had been injured, including three wounded by gunshots. Marion Barry, then a D.C. Council member, was among the injured. All told, in a 39-hour terrorist siege in Washington, 149 innocent people had been taken hostage. We forget the lesson of March 9, 1977, at our peril. Like the victims of 9-11, the victims of the violent March 9 takeover had no relation to the motives behind the assault. The Hanafi Muslims, an orthodox Islamic group, killed and took hostages in 1977 to force the government to turn over five Black Muslims convicted of murdering seven members of a Hanafi member's family four years earlier. The Hanafi Muslims also killed and maimed to stop the showing in America of the movie "Mohammad, Messenger of God" on the grounds that it was sacrilegious. Fifteen hostages at the District Building, more than 120 hostages at the B'nai B'rith building and a dozen hostages at the Islamic Center had absolutely nothing to do with the jailed Black Muslims or the showing of "Mohammad, Messenger of God." They were innocent targets of opportunity -- a condition not exclusive, but certainly common, to people living and working in the nation's capital. The March 9 terror changed the way we live in this city well before that horror-filled September day came along. Because of the Hanafi takeover, armed guards and metal detectors were positioned where they had never stood before. Closed-circuit television cameras, identification badges and concrete barriers are now permanent features of our local scenery. Terrorism also permanently changed the lives of its victims. Bob Pierce went to work at the District Building 25 years ago as a legal intern for a council member. The day ended with him paralyzed for life, victim of a shotgun blast to the back as he lay with his face buried in the carpet. The deep rage, the mindless, violent assault on the innocents -- all that this city saw then and last September, and in numerous bloody international incidents in between -- are solemn reminders of the scourge that can strike a power center such as Washington at any time. "I say throughout this country it can get worse and there's nothing nobody can do about it," said Hamaas Abdul Khaalis, the Hanafi group's leader in one of his apocalyptic warnings and demands in 1977. Evil forces of that day were defeated. But the lesson taught 25 years ago, which bears repeating today, is that leaders in Washington, as they build for the future, must -- in a world where terrorism seeks its day -- do no less than always prepare for the worst. - - ----------------------- Les, packing for JoniFest. - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2002 13:58:45 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Joni's album commitment Brenda wrote: > It's called the Recording Artists Coalition and Joni was not a > founding member. Would you like to see it? It's really a great coincidence that this concert came up in conversation because I've been quietly planning to bring it along to JoniFest and spring it on everyone. In my opinion it is the crown jewel in Wally Breese's video collection. About a year ago, Megan Allen asked me to make safety copies of the dubs that Wally made for her. There were about 8 videos most of which Barbara Burst and Ashara have already treed for us. After I sent the safety copies to Megan, I forwarded Megan's originals for consideration for future trees. The Wembly show is the one when she said, "We're glad to be here. How's everbody doin?" Just a few people cheer. Teasing, she goes, "Alright? Is that all? Just alright?" Much bigger cheer. Joni: "Yeah! Alright! That's about how glad WE are too!" The Wembly date is grainy as all get out, and everything that Wally dubbed for Megan is in mono BUT, as you said, it was a great show. She did stuff from "Wild Things Run Fast" which, for me, is an essential Joni title. She sat at the piano, with a full band, and did "Chinese Cafe"!! For me, that's a good as this little singer-songwriter game gets. Lamadoo ps, the video I have is "only" about 50 minutes. Does someone else have a longer, or stereo, or superior-quality video of Wembley on 24th April, 1983? - --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > **Just new to the list. We haven't heard that for a looooong time. And she said "Yes" to a Hits package. And the next one in the nest is the FIRST-EVER sequel. This sounds exactly like an exit strategy to me." Jim, I hate to say it, but I agree with you, for various reasons. First, Joni's last release of original material was TTT in 1998. The album included one song, "My Best to You," that she didn't write; another, "Man from Mars," previously completed for a movie, and several more she had been singing in her occasional concerts throughout the early 90's. Simply put, her output, in sheer quantity, is not anything approaching what it once was. Joni has also commented publicly that she "sings her sorrow and paints her joy," hates the contemporary music biz, and wants to retire. She has been quite clear through most of the 90's that her heart is not in music. And I think it very telling that, as an immediate response to the events of September 11, her reaction was not to write a song about the horror of the attacks, but to complete a painting of the burning towers. She's living now nearly full-time in her box of paints. Finally, and most sadly, I'm not sure that Joni has a lot more to say. Judging from the quality of the some of the writing on TTT, which tended too often to disintegrate into ill-conceived rants against various forces real and (perhaps) imagined, I'd cautiously venture that the quality of Joni's songwriting does not currently occupy the extremely high level it did for such a very long time. I'd further say that, consummate artist that she was and always will be on at least some level, she knows that. In all, if Joni wants to end her professional association with the music world to pursue a life filled with painting and the laughter of her grandchildren, I say: let her. She's earned it. And she's given us so much that I feel like some sort of musical and literary glutton, daring to ask for more. This is especially true if pursuing another path would contribute in a significant way to her lasting happiness. We're talking tens of thousands of $$. She sold lithos of some of her paintings during her last tour, some signed and some not, which show up on ebay occasionally for $100+. She has also issued various limited editions of her work over the years, expect to pay $1000-5000 for one of those rare pieces. If you visit the jonimitchell.com website you should be able to find something that, with the help of a good printer, will spruce up the walls. The ginger and ti leaf plants are swaying, the sound of water is in the air as it runs from the pond next to the house, the soft lilting sound of Hawaii's morning doves comes in through the windows which are all open, and the sun is pouring in. Although everything is shining there are clouds beginning to blow in and we may have rain soon. Rain is considered a blessing here. It can be fierce and driving but it can also be gentle and is always warm (unless of course you are way up country where it can get quite cold.). The smells after a rain are incredibly earthy and intoxicating. Upstairs in this lovely Baliness type house, Linda (Melanie's dear friend from Bali) and another friend Christie (whom Melanie met in Bali but who now lives in Colorado and arrived here last night after a very long series of flight delays), are cleaning and making yummy smelling things to eat. Sandy and Jim are off today - visiting other parts of the island, swimming, maybe taking a yoga class, recharging. Doug, Jack and Cindy Walsh who flew over last night to spend the day, are up in Makawao probably waking up and thinking about the day ahead. We all have plans for a big dinner tonight. After a busy morning with Sandy Jim Chas, and Linda heading out for various part o the island, Jack and I remained yesterday, quietly fielding calls and visitors, talking, giving foot rubs, cleaning, being generally attentive and available. Chasman flew home yesterday afternoon after spending several days here in Maui. It was clear that his presence was valuable and much appreciated by Melanie as it was by all of us. His family will be happy to see him and hear the stories he brings with him. I drove across Haleakala from Eric's this morning early, watching the shadows shorten as the sun rose. The meadows moved in the early breeze, there were no clouds at first, and the land in the ismus in the middle of the island was checked in various shades of green, yellow and the deep rustie red that is so much part of the islands. I love the Hawaiian music ... filled with passion and love for the "aina" (land), something so enduring. Iz Kamakawiwo'ole, a very big man who had the smoothest of voices, was singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." It is by far the most beautiful and haunting rendition of the song and is so perrrrfect for right now. I wish I were able to attach it here for you to hear...... This morning has been a bit rough -- Melanie is experiencing pain breaking through the morphine -- it may be that stronger doses will be necessary before long. She has been vomiting despite the fact that she has so little in her system and the color is different today. Her energy is quite low although she swings between being very engaged for a few moments at a time, then seeming to drift off. I am hoping there aren't too many visitors and calls, not because they are not appreciated but because of the sheer number of them. She becomes "short," as she says apologetically. It is all part of the process. At some point it just won't engage her and she will let go. We are quite an intoxicating bunch....our love draws her out, gives her juice, and the flood of emails is soooo compelling. She is rather overwhelmed with it all and very touched.. There is so much love.......... Thank you for all the energy being sent our way.
