That article is a big, big clue to figuring out Joni's major themes in The Hissing of Summer Lawns. I think that magazines don't run wierd articles like that anymore because there's nothing "old", primitive anymore. It's all been gobbled up, as they discussed 27 years ago in that National Geographic. >>>>>> I happened to flick through an old National Geographic. It's Vol. 147, No.2, from February 1975. There's a fascinating - and deeply strange - pair of articles and accompanying pics by one W. Jesco von Puttkamer (crazy name, crazy guy!) concerning two "stone age" Brazilian Indian tribes, the Kreen-Akarores and their apparent old enemies, the Txukahameis. And, on pages 272-273 is....yep...the original photograph that a certain Ms Mitchell must have traced for use on the collage/illustration on the HOSL cover of the Txukahameis Indians (plus, second from right, a stripe-faced visiting Suya Indian) hauling a giant Anaconda out of the water. Man....why don't magazines run features that strange anymore? I've been trapped under boxes (the type for moving) for weeks now and am beginning to see the Jonifest light! I was still wavering on my set here and thought I'd ask for some assistance. As far as Joni songs go, I was interested in maybe playing Carey again, but only if I have some Careyettes! My other option is Coyote, also some singing assistance would be helpful ;-) I was definitely going to play it's a hard life by Nancy Griffith. I also wanted to do a sing along I was thinking of either peace Train or Hide Your Love Away by the Beatles or I am totally open to suggestions. HELP! lol... To the list: I've already had a good handful of these spoken for, but I still have plenty to go around. This CD is NOT available in the US, so if you want one (for what I paid for it - $10.50 + $2 shipping) let me know. I CAN say that once this batch is gone I don't intend on re-stocking, and if you want one you'll have to pay about twice as much once you have it shipped from Germany. Joniphiles - I received an offlist message today from Evelyn Williams, who had a contribution for the JMIC Glossary Project (http://www.jmdl.com/glossary). She seems to have finally cleared up the "muslims stick up Washington" line from "Otis and Marlena". The DJRD album was released in December of 1977 and in the previous March of that year twelve Hanafi Muslims armed with shotguns and machetes stormed the District Building in Washington DC. The crisis lasted two days and resulted in one dead and dozens injured. I think Evelyn has solved the mystery of that line... thanks Evelyn! Here's a short article from the Washington Post that ran 25 years to the day later: - ----------------- 25th Anniversary of Terror; March 9, 2002 It came with the suddenness of September 11: a well-coordinated terrorist attack in the heart of the nation's capital, 25 years ago today. Twelve gunmen, Hanafi Muslims heavily armed with shotguns and machetes, storming into the then District Building on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the offices of B'nai B'rith on Rhode Island Avenue NW and the Islamic Center on Massachusetts Avenue NW. Before the terrorist assault was brought to an end two days later, Maurice Williams, a 24-year-old reporter for WHUR-FM radio, had been shot dead, and dozens more had been injured, including three wounded by gunshots. Marion Barry, then a D.C. Council member, was among the injured. All told, in a 39-hour terrorist siege in Washington, 149 innocent people had been taken hostage. We forget the lesson of March 9, 1977, at our peril. Like the victims of 9-11, the victims of the violent March 9 takeover had no relation to the motives behind the assault. The Hanafi Muslims, an orthodox Islamic group, killed and took hostages in 1977 to force the government to turn over five Black Muslims convicted of murdering seven members of a Hanafi member's family four years earlier. The Hanafi Muslims also killed and maimed to stop the showing in America of the movie "Mohammad, Messenger of God" on the grounds that it was sacrilegious. Fifteen hostages at the District Building, more than 120 hostages at the B'nai B'rith building and a dozen hostages at the Islamic Center had absolutely nothing to do with the jailed Black Muslims or the showing of "Mohammad, Messenger of God." They were innocent targets of opportunity -- a condition not exclusive, but certainly common, to people living and working in the nation's capital. The March 9 terror changed the way we live in this city well before that horror-filled September day came along. Because of the Hanafi takeover, armed guards and metal detectors were positioned where they had never stood before. Closed-circuit television cameras, identification badges and concrete barriers are now permanent features of our local scenery. Terrorism also permanently changed the lives of its victims. Bob Pierce went to work at the District Building 25 years ago as a legal intern for a council member. The day ended with him paralyzed for life, victim of a shotgun blast to the back as he lay with his face buried in the carpet. The deep rage, the mindless, violent assault on the innocents -- all that this city saw then and last September, and in numerous bloody international incidents in between -- are solemn reminders of the scourge that can strike a power center such as Washington at any time. "I say throughout this country it can get worse and there's nothing nobody can do about it," said Hamaas Abdul Khaalis, the Hanafi group's leader in one of his apocalyptic warnings and demands in 1977. Evil forces of that day were defeated. But the lesson taught 25 years ago, which bears repeating today, is that leaders in Washington, as they build for the future, must -- in a world where terrorism seeks its day -- do no less than always prepare for the worst. - ----------------------- Les, packing for JoniFest. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2002 13:58:45 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Joni's album commitment Brenda wrote: > It's called the Recording Artists Coalition and Joni was not a > founding member. I think Brenda, you're on to something. I don't see Joni going indie because she'd lose her "ameteur" standing in a certain way. Let me explain. For decades, she's been railing against the business. She's the last person in the world to turn on a dime and go into a string of interviews with "Ooooh, I love to meet people who ask me "What Bob Dylan's really like?" and "So, how's it feel to write "Both Sides, Now"?" and "Do you often get mistaken for Judy Collins?" When I turned down interviews for the past 30 years, I didn't know what FUN it could be!" That's not Joni. When others do it, it's real and it's great and it works. But I can't imagine that Ms. Mitchell can make the jump. She identifies herself as "a painter". Period. She's been telling us for decades that music is her "day job". (And she's a late riser! Hee hee) In June 1971, the "Blue" album revealed her vision of Los Angeles: "But it don't snow here It stays pretty green I'm going to make a lot of money Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene." I think this is ONE painter who has painter herself into a corner. Someone tell me she's working on new songs. We haven't heard that for a looooong time. And she said "Yes" to a Hits package. And the next one in the nest is the FIRST-EVER sequel. This sounds exactly like an exit strategy to me. (As in, "Well, if I'm goin' out, I'll make sure I like the Hits package. We'll do it MY way. And if I'm going out, I'll let Larry pick the songs for the oldies record ("Both Sides Now"). And if I'm on my way out, what's the harm in a sequel?" Maybe the promotion routine is too much excitement, travel, and illness now. On the other hand, I'll never forget how juiced she was the last time I saw Joni. It was Detroit in 2000, and she was at the "Both Sides Now" concert. Even though her flight was delayed, she kept the date and was wired when she took the stage. What I'm saying is that I think she actually *enjoys* very short tours. I think she'll do another short tour but will not do a big tour and will not grant an interview to Rolling Stone. My guess. One more thing? When I saw Joni in the Rolling Thunder Revue, I thought, "All that talent, and she runs off after ONE or TWO songs? That's a waste." When I saw her in the film from the Isle Of Wight concert, & I thought, "She lost on a festival crowd. It doesn't translate." Same thing about the Dylan tour. Unlike Neil and Crazy Horse, and the E Streeters, my opinion was that stuff like "Song For Sharon" works in a living room best and is almost lost in a hockey arena. It doesn't translate. But the "Both Sides Now" tour worked for me. Listen to any of those shows and you'll hear someone have a time and working at doing her best. For me, I hope a tour happens. Man, that last one was a great time. Lama Lamadoo Brenda said,>>>>> She could also do what Van Morrison has done the last few years. He makes the records he wants and then takes them to whatever label he thinks can do the best with it because it may fit a particular genre. He makes very short term licensing deals and he owns it all. It would be something to see her do that. It just doesn't seem likely that she would.>>>>>> ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #324 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
