I am fighting to keep it simple as we did on the > original dy, My suggestion is to emphasize what a wonderful thing it is just being able to gather, what a miracle that everyone is there, still alive and able to be together, and how that's not something to ever take for granted. And some silence because when there's a lot of activity and noise it's not always easy to feel connected to everyone (I think) because people are focused on what's happening, not on each other. I like candlelight services as a symbol of the connection between us all (plus everyone always looks so darn good with their face all aglow). It's always beautiful the way the flame goes from one person to the next until there are dozens, hundreds, thousands of fragile, yet strong (even if the flame has to be protected by one's hand), bright flickers of light. To me it's a moving symbol of the fragility of life and how one life affects and is part of each other life. The plans for marking the anniversary in NYC were announced this morning and include a candlelight ceremony in the biggest park in each of the boroughs. I'll be walking over to Central Park and just the idea of being in such a gathering is healing for me. And if there's some terrorist activity because the crowds will be huge, well, so be it. > My biggest challenge is how to involve the people who attrend; as clergy, I > get to play a role, but the people just sit unless we find a way to > involve them more than just singing the occasional hymn and saying > Amen. I am trying to formulate a candle lightiung thing but it isn't > coming together in my mind. Poetry keeps coming to mind, although nothing in particular, but things different people could read parts of, rather than having one specified reader. And if people were gathered closely in a circle (not a single huge one, but concentric circles) rather than in rows they could look across at each other holding candles. And maybe the service could be held outside so there's an obvious connection to nature also. > The one thing I know I want sung is "O Beautiful, for Spacious Skies" > (even I have my patriotic side). Yes, it's a beautiful song, rather melancholy I find rather than being a rah, rah song. > I also am open to any ideas as to how to nicely make the point at the > community service that yes surely 11 September was a horrible act of > terrorism that should be commemorated - that is why i was the only > clergy in our community to suggest it - but in the eyes of the suffering > of the world, it was dramatic, but hardly the worst event of even the > last decade. > how can we only remember our own pain and not also include the suffering > of others? I do not want what we do to be a > political event at all. There have been horrors throughout history and I'd like to say it's because people lose their connection with each other, but that's too simple. Very tightly connected groups do horrors to other groups, so it's not as though there's no connection to people, just that sometimes the group's demands are stronger. It plays out in less horrific ways every day. And how to bring that up in a memorial service... that's a tough one. Maybe in remembering the victims, perhaps naming the historical "events", and prayers for personal courage and clear-sightedness for each of us so we do not become victimizers ourselves. > Any ideas, I am open to. If you all out there were planning a community > service to observe September 11th, what would you do? What should I do? Mayor Bloomberg this morning also mentioned his hope that people throughout the world would gather and light candles as it's happening in NY, so perhaps that connection could be part of your service too. It's quite a NY-centric hope, but the outpouring of condolences in the form of gifts for the memorials here, photos of ceremonies throughout the world, and hearing/reading people's stories was tremendously comforting last Fall. There's a tendency when suffering to feel it's a solitary experience; it was good to be reminded that's not the case. Hope some of these ideas are helpful, Vince. I wish you much luck with your planning and now am curious about how it will turn out. I'll have the TV on for part of the day also, especially early when the name of each victim is read at the ceremony at ground zero. It's hard to get a grasp of the number of people and, for me, it will be a chance to remember them all as unique individuals. And to remind myself of the unique personhood of every victim of violence, not only the ones in the towers that day. When reading the article I was also thinking of Joni and how she resisted being molded in any way, and wasn't even looking for fame, but was just doing what was meaningful to her. I'm thankful, too, that I was able to grow up with Joni. The execs in the article are already "planning" on Britney not being around much longer. Wow, use 'em and toss 'em. Such a cruel business. No wonder the 30-year career folks are getting attention these days, even from younger listeners. There's got to be some substance there to survive that business. There's also a review on the Times website of the Newport Folk Festival that Dylan played at recently, first time since he was booed for going electric there 40 years ago. It includes descriptions of the music scenes, now and then, and how different they are. There was a lot of sharing going on back then. Kind of reminds me of the jonifest music making. New Archbishop Finds Himself In Pagan Controversy By Mike Wendling London Bureau Chief August 05, 2002 www.CNSNews.com - London (CNSNews.com) - The future Archbishop of Canterbury was inducted into a group with Druid roots Monday, an event that was criticized by traditional Anglican groups but that the Archbishop himself defended as "entirely Christian in tone." Archbishop-elect Rowan Williams was inducted into the Gorsedd of the Bards during a ceremony at the National Eisteddfod, a Welsh cultural festival. Williams and the group's leaders say the ceremony has nothing to do with paganism or the ancient Celtic religion of the Druids. But some evangelical Anglicans are upset at what they say is the participation of their next leader in a Druid rite. According to the festival's website, the Gorsedd of Bards is "an association whose members consist of poets, writers, musicians, artists and individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to the Welsh nation, language and culture." The Gorsedd of the Bards dates from 1792, when founder Edward Williams - no relation to the Archbishop-elect - started the group in London as a way of advancing Welsh culture. During a dawn ceremony, society members gather around a stone circle dressed in robes. Inductees clutch a long sword while a list of their accomplishments is read out. This year's festival is being held in Pembrokeshire on the southwest coast of Wales. Although the Gorsedd is headed by an "arch Druid," festival officials denied the ceremony had any pagan links. "It's a celebration of culture and the arts in Wales," a spokeswoman said. "People hear the word Druid and they associate it with pagan beliefs - that's not what this is about. There are Christian hymns during the ceremony, and there's a Christian element to the proceedings." The spokeswoman said that conservative Christians and reporters had "got the wrong end of the stick" - in other words, they didn't fully understand the history and meaning of the Gorsedd ceremony. That explanation didn't quite satisfy David Phillips, general secretary of The Church Society, an evangelical group within the Anglican Church. Phillips expressed doubts about the suitability of the ceremony when it was announced last month that Williams was going to be inducted into the Gorsedd. Williams has since been named the next Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the Anglican Church, and Phillips said that questions remain about the ritual. "I'm surprised that a Christian leader would want to be involved in something like this," he said. Phillips said some of his associates in Wales have a different view of the Gorsedd, but that the "multi-faith" aspects of the ceremony weren't entirely acceptable to the Church Society. "We understand that there's a generic reference to 'God' included in the ceremony," he said. "We are looking for more information, but as we understand it, this ceremony isn't fully Christian." Reform, another evangelical group within the church, said that church leaders should concentrate on the Christian faith "rather than dabbling in other things." Williams struck back at his critics in a statement released Monday. "When approached by the Gorsedd and invited to receive the honor of being admitted to the Gorsedd, I was delighted to accept," he said. "Admission to the Gorsedd is one of the greatest honors which Wales can bestow on her citizens." Williams noted that several previous Welsh bishops have also been admitted to the society. "The suggestion, perpetrated recently by some elements of the British daily press, that the Gorsedd is even remotely associated with paganism is deeply offensive - not just in its suggestion that I would wish to associate myself in any way with paganism, but also to those people of goodwill in Wales who appreciate the Gorsedd and Eisteddfod for the color and culture which they bring to Welsh national life," he said. The society's recorder, Y Prifardd Jams Nicolas, also criticized reports linking the Gorsedd with paganism. "A lot of nonsense has appeared ... suggesting that the Gorsedd is a pagan organization," he said. "Nothing could be further from the truth." "The Gorsedd's ceremonies are entirely Christian in tone, Christian hymns are sung and the prayers are made to God," Nicolas said. "A great many of those accorded the Gorsedd's honors over the years have been Christian ministers of religion from various denominations." Williams is the first modern Archbishop of Canterbury to come from Wales, a U.K. province that has been culturally and politically intertwined for hundreds of years with its bigger neighbor to the east, England. Since he was named as the successor to Archbishop George Carey last month, Williams' thoughts on politics and religion have been the subject of intense scrutiny. He holds liberal views on the ordination of gay and women clergy but is conservative when it comes to abortion and birth control. Before he was named Archbishop, several evangelical leaders questioned whether he would be a suitable candidate to lead the church. But experts say Williams won't be in a hurry to impose his own doctrinal ideas on Anglicans and that his appointment most likely won't cause a severe division in the church. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 17:49:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: i used to be wallyK njc - --- Wally Kairuz wrote: > back online! back at work! back among you!!!!! > oodles of news to tell you all. but that will have > to wait until tomorrow. > and yes, i'm getting married in december. do you > want to hear about it?
