Well, the party was already well and truly in full swing. All pissed as farts. A bit early I thought. As the party wore on, things just got worse. I just didn't know what to do. Whenever I wanted to move, I had to step over writhing bodies or those already passed out. It just goes to show you can not really tell what people are like from emails. Ashara(and her consort) were there. My, what a good time Mama she is. Lets just leave it that. Oh okay, just a bit....you see Les was laso there(deep voiced dish) and quite obviously Ashara was taken with him. Her fingers were playing thru his hair, whilst he just moaned softly. I felt myself start to blush so i left at that point to go outside. Well, that was not much better. Donna and Strings(not listers-i wonder why) were in the most strange position and talking to eachother in some language I haven't heard before but it apparently required quite a bit of deep breathing. A difficult language to learn without passing out I would think. Then there was Garret. What a sweet quiet young man, i thought. Well, looks can be deceiving. Once Martin and Chris got their instruments out, the sweet young man impression just vanished. Leivre(sp?)-beautiful, elegant, butter wouldn't melt-one would think-but there she was going from kitchen to the 'love room' keeping everyone 'supplied'. And then Azeem-what can I say..so quiet and polite and well, um,...depraved is the word that springs to mind. Poor Steve-I have some very good, compromising pictures of him and his antics. i haven't decided yet whether to put them on site or sell them to the highest bidder. As for my John, I gave up trying to explain that i really don't know these people that well. i had NO IDEA at all. What can you tell from email? Very little it seems. When I finally left, still reeling with shock, i just about made it out the door before being dragged into whatever strange game they were playing. It required lots of moaning and loosening of clothes. The following day, i returned for the second day of this 'fest'(well, I had to didn't I? It juts wouldn't have been polite not to). It seemd Good Time Mama had over done it and she and her consort Sal, had left. Perhaps the British 'reserve' was cramping her style. I believe she was going to some Pagan ritual thing in deepest darkest Suffolk. I know all about those. They are often in the Sunday tabloids. If you thought Day 1 was quiet and restrained, Day 2 made me feel I had been in a time machine and gone back to the times of Nero. Just when i thought all was lost, I heard Donna surface and say'can't you talk about anything else but fucking Joni?' It is very tempting to go on and tell you all about this second day, but i have principles and I am sure Chris , such a good friend, would not really want me to explain you why the police were called and just why they all have to go to court on Monday. Something to do with the 'corruption and obscenity' laws. I am sure it was all just a misucdersatnding and the stains will come out in the wash..... (in case you are wondering why I don't have to go to court...apart from being sober, naturally, it was just so obvious to the police, who arrived in riot gear btw, that i was an inncocent bystander with high moral standards). So that is it folks.....UK Jonifest 2002 is over(well my part in it anyway, but according to the news this morning a disturbance has been reported in the genral driection of Chris' home). Will I be attending UK JoniFest 2003? Of course. That felt great! As for the above question about why I ended up here now, I'm not completely sure. I've known about the JMDL for a long time. Back in the mid-90s when the web was new, I, like probably a lot of you, did searches for info on Joni. Eventually I came across Wally Breese and the JM Homepage. Wally and I had an email correspondence for a while and I think I eventually sent him a lithograph based on the song Amelia with a drawing of Joni in the print that I had done. Although I've never stopped listening to Joni, in the past few months my interest has been renewed. This could be in part because Joni is a genius and her music just has that capacity, and partly because I'm trying to get all of her music in a digital format. So, with each new CD purchase, it's almost like hearing the music for the first time. [BTW, does anyone know if Dog Eat Dog can be purchased on CD anywhere? It seems to be out of print.} I kept hearing Magdalene Laundries on spinner.com. It was the version with The Chieftans. I think it is such a great version of the song and it really made me listen to the song in a new way. I love the lines at the end...."not any spring...." I went and got that which got me started on this quest to get everything Joni has ever done. I'm something of a collector by nature, so this combines two interests. I thought that joining this list would be a good way to learn about works by Joni that I didn't know about, and already that has proven to be true. Thanks again to everyone for the warm welcome! (long) Well, I'm back home after a beautiful weekend of eating, drinking, singing, playing, silly voices, variable weather, renewing acquaintances and getting to know people better. Colin has already snaffled up the gold medal with his no-holds-barred cinema-verite report of the orgy of untrammelled decadence which has already shocked residents of this small Cambridgeshire town. I can't remember the activities that Colin describes, but hey, if you can remember it, then you weren't there! I can't describe what a pleasure it was to meet Ashara after corresponding with her for so long, and getting a non-virtual hug. She and Sal are Seriously Good People, full of warmth and good humour, and sporting an impressive arsenal of high-tech photographic equipment, the results of which will no doubt be making an appearance very soon. My only disappointment was discovering that Ashara only sings in 17 languages - come on lady, get yer act together! Chris was the host with the most, as he was last time, providing unparallelled hospitality, storming bass playing, an endless stream of double-entendres and a very sweet singing voice, which I'd never heard before - - more, Chris! We spent most of Friday afternoon and evening in the garden, chewing the fat and gurning for regular photos. By that time there were a baker's dozen of us, Stevie Mitchell having had to return to London for some vague and possibly illicit purpose. To say that he made up for lost drinking time on his return later that evening would be to fail even to hint at the enthusiasm with which he was knocking back the grog. None of this stopped him supplying some lovely backing vocals and some even filthier double-entendres (there were a LOT of them about - quite right too, they are the lowest and funniest form of humour). Anyway, so there we were, drinking the milk of human kindness (among other things). Jacky had trekked up from deepest Sussex, sadly without any of her wonderful mandolins, but hey, she brought her wit and wisdom, so I'm not complaining. Lieve was making her debut at a Jonifest, and it was lovely to spend time with such a beautiful person, who radiates joie de vie and warmth. Yet another bonus of this weekend was to get to know Garret and Donna, the Irish contingent (well, Garret's the Joni fan, Donna graciously tolerates our idolatry :-) - I hadn't spoken to them much before, and in addition to being top people, they have both got the gift of the gab in spades. Donna is also the provisional winner of the swearing competition, pending verification by the audio and video tape analysts. And I can report that they can both sing too, though they didn't volunteer for front-line service - next time, guys? I can't say anything about Colin at the moment, as my lawyers are still considering the merits of the libel case I will be bringing against him for the outrageous calumnies he saw fit to post to the list. [Whaddya mean I protest too much??] John was as cool as a cucumber, and was joint winner with Les of the Hunkiest Voice competition. [my lawyers have just authorised me to disclose the fact that Strings and Colin tied for the Talking The Hind Leg Off A Donkey competition] We eventually got to the singing part of the evening, and were treated by a wonderful selection of songs written by Strings and Martin with England's Jaco, Chris. Martin and Strings "offstage" are like a comedy double act (with Martin as the "straight man" :-) with Strings's ebullience playing off perfectly against Martin's dry humour and impeccable timing. "Onstage", they are both totally focused on the music. Martin plays guitar beautifully, while Strings has a gorgeous voice, putting over her lyrics with utter conviction and maximum emotional impact. Once this gal realises just how good she is, watch out world! And then there was Les, a walkover winner of the Best Scoobie-Doo Impersonation Competition, and like everyone at the gathering, someone you could happily spend an evening with, talking about any topic under the sun. Les's unique performing style has already been swooned over by those who saw him here last year, and at the USA fest. Tonight he premiered his extraordinary, minimalist arrangement of Woodstock, which he still describes as a work in progress - so USA festers, it's gonna be even better in three weeks time! I must add thanks to Martin for accompanying me on my rendition of I Got What I Wanted, which took him all of thirty seconds to pick up. Unfortunately, I walked away with the Most Inept Guitar Solo award, but as I said, this is a kind audience, and nobody threw anything. Well, either that or they're lousy shots. And I promise to have a couple of my own songs next time. Saturday was spent doing completely different things to Friday. Oh, alright then, it was more of the same: good company, enough alcohol to float a battleship and enough food to feed its crew, and more great music, this time of a more communal nature. The evening went on far into the night, and eventually turned into a joyful Crowded House singalong. Sadly, our collective rendition of Four Seasons In One Day didn't make it to tape, but trust me, it was very sweet indeed. It'd be impossible to remember everything, so apologies to anyone slighted by omission, but highlights would have to include Donna's spunky rendition of American Pie and Martin's note-perfect recreation of May You Never. It was all good stuff, balm for the soul. All good things have to end, and so Sunday saw the hardcore elements finally despatched back to their homes, leaving Chris to resume a less stressful existence and rub his hands together with glee at the thought of daily barbecues for the next two weeks.
