Go look at the new, brightly coloured but very unpleasant face of America, at the official Citizen Corps site (the TIP's project "A national system for concerned workers to report suspicious activity." is at www.citizencorps.gov/tips.html). The entire concept is very scary. In my job, we sometimes get people writing in to "snitch" on other people. In my experience, most of those who want to snitch on others tend to be malcontents with a major chip on their shoulders, or people who believe and spread every rumour they hear, or, in some cases, they're even paranoid and psychotic. They either use this type of snitch-line to get back at people they don't like, by telling false stories about them, or they are genuinely psychotic and really believe this other person is evil and out to get them. No matter what way you look at it, it's frightening. And I agree that the ones who run these things are often even scarier than the ones who do the snitching. ______________________________________________________________________ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jul 2002 11:47:03 -0500 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: Joni and Jewel I was just reading about the November 2001 Vanity Fair photoshoot with musicians on the cover. Love Paz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jul 2002 12:41:45 -0500 From: johnirving Subject: They kiss on the Seine. Hi All, Happy Jonifest time. I'm home, rested from our fabulous trip to France. And yes, the young do kiss a lot on Main St., although I couldn't say if Joni or Myrtle is right as to weither it's amour or just passion. On our last day, I walked alone for the only day of the trip, over to the Isle St. Louis to buy pastries for the trip home from a lovely little shop that sold the most luscious apricot tart avec 'pistache.' Along the way I sang a number of Joni's paris songs to myself and gosh, they came alive on the streets of Paris big time! -That was fun. One nice moment was the evening Rich and I met Laurent. We went for dinner in a small Japanese resteraunt where Laurent grilled me on my interests in Joni. Rich noticed he was sounding me out before deciding weither or not to invite me back to his apartment. "Do you read the list?" he asked... he couldn't recall me posting there. (I insisted I did, though less now.) -Had I read his posts? Could I recall any? - --Well, to be honest, no. I rarely take note of who's posting what. It saves me forming an "attitude" towards any particular list member. I just go with the content. And man, I can zoom past anything non-Joan related in a nanosecond. So up to this point I was striking out big time. Then he asked what else I listened to and I replied, "I don't listen to anything other than Joni." Now that took him by surprise. Nothing else? Wouldn't I get bored, overwhelmed by that??? - -To which I replied, "Joni is the counter spirit of my own being. I love EVERYTHING she's done and I can listen to her forever and a day and still be on my feet." Or something to that effect... Well, THAT worked. We were off down the lovely tree lined, bustling streets of Paris; past cafes with outdoor seating, past Pastisseries with the most gorgeous delicacies in the glass cases. We took the back way up to Laurent's flat. It's a gorgeous home filled with fine, elegant antiques and fine furniture, books, paintings and the like. It's the sort of interior Woody Allen uses for his films, these deep multi-roomed affairs that leave you amazed someone could have a place like that in New York, or in this case Paris. We were treated to ice cream from a shop most dear to Parisians, on the Isle St. Louis. (Didn't think the cream could last the 8 hour flight home.) It was delicious. A must stop if you're visiting Paris, btw. I almost got thrown out for spilling my glace twice in the apartment. !!!! Yipes indeed. But it wasn't all my fault. He kept pointing out interesting things while I was eating and I'd look up and my plate would turn up and... well, here's hoping when I'm finally invited to Bob Mullers that peach pie will be on the menu. The pie would slide less. Laurent played a tape of his band performing 2 Joni tunes: Black Crow and Woodstock. His guitar work was verrrry nice, I should add. He gave me a short lesson in Joni playing. I was my ever demure self and refused to take the guitar. Someday, I will be a public Joni singer and player. But for now, I croon when solitary or at least feeling so. The evening was topped off with Laurent taking out an outfit of Joni's, signed, that he purchased. Quelle small!!! Joni is my height (5'7), and I couldn't imagine someone my height getting into that petite little garment. So there you have it. Another list member met and once again I am delighted and amazed at how fantastic JMDL members are to meet in person. For those of you headed for JoniFest, you are in for a fabulous treat. Next year, I learn to speak French. -This year. For next year. -You know what I mean. Best to all. My big reservation is that it is widely being put to a particularly unappetising (to me) use<< you are right, protools can be used by all sorts of people with all sorts of results... my point was mainly that i don't think anyone, no matter how good your ears, could ever tell if someone had used protools to correct someone's pitch... i love protools but use it sparingly...or rather my engineer does (i just watch & listen)... maybe i'm giving away trade secrets here but recording artists rarely sing a whole song all the way through on a take & keep that take in its entirety...(except if its a live recording)...singers will often sing a song several times & with protools you can pick & choose the best parts from each take & put em altogether for the recording...in the old days you used to have to punch in the parts that you weren't happy with... for me its a recording tool, rather than a songwriting tool... ******************************************** Kate Bennett: www.katebennett.com Sponsored by Polysonics/Atlantis Sound Labs Over the Moon- "bringing the melancholy world of twilight to life almost like magic" All Music Guide ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jul 2002 15:50:41 -0400 From: "Suze Cameron" Subject: Re: something disturbing (NJC) Hi Ron, I am going to play Polyanna here and say that I don't have a problem with this. After all, don't you think it already goes on, just not in an organized fashion? If these agencies are truly going to focus on terrorism then I don't see what the concern is. My small subdivison has a neighborhood watch program. We look out for each other and report any suspcious cars or people in the area. Isn't that basically what the government is suggesting we do? Also, the whole racial profiling getting a bum rap... hello, our country was ATTACKED! If the perps were short, stocky women in their forties with blonde curly hair I wouldn't mind being pulled over and asked questions. I could understand being yanked out of line at the airport and having my luggage inspected. I'm sorry I don't fit the profile of the criminals, but is that MY fault? Arab Americans, and I know there are plenty of them who are law abiding, need to look to their countrymen in the Middle East and point the finger there, not here. Whoah! Look out I'm on my soap box now! Too bad I missed Speakers Corner in Hyde Park. Of course I may have been apt to say something bad about the Royals and that would land me square at Traitor's Gate now wouldn't it? Sue n.p. I think, in theory, the idea is to have a more efficient centralralized clearinghouse of the tips that now go off into various other agencies and possibly get shuffled to the bottom of the pile. And I think that the primary goal is to facilitiate reports of suspicious activity of possible terrorists. However, with all of that I think that a lot of people feel a great aversion and opposition to this kind of centralized Federal control generally because it might be used against anyone or any group that future Federal administrations may not like. I'm not positive but it is my understanding that the idea is going to be scrapped based on majority conrgessional opposition. I have not heard a thing.** Hi Mia, Joni constantly gets hammered with questions asking her what she what she thinks about Shawn Colvin/Sheryl Crow/Jewel etc. Basically any girl with a guitar gets compared to Joni. Joni always responds that nobody else writes and composes like she does and they shouldn't be compared to her. While it comes off as arrogance, it's not intended that way. I haven't heard any of the artists in question compare themselves to Joni, they are always in awe of her, and rightfully so. It's just the press that screws it up. But perhaps bubbling underneath there's a resentment from Joni when one of the new faces strikes it big while mining the same turf that Joni has done with so much more success. And fwiw, I've always liked Jewel's "Pieces Of You" and still play it. And thanks for mentioning my dear Antonia Christina Basilotta, a.k.a. Tony Basil. I've always liked the sexy energy of her "Mickey" song and video, but originally became enamored of her when she played a prostitute who trips on acid and cavorts around a New Orleans cemetary with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson in the film classic "Easy Rider" (1969).
