Dear Correspondents: July has been a crazy month!! My goodness. I have been watching my Joni email addy fill up to 786 emails since 7/2! I was thinking that my pals have been a bit quiet since I was able to start reading, then opened that addy and saw at least 100 spams. That means you all have only posted about 686 since the 1st? What's up with that -- we can do that in a good weekend!! I didn't read them all yet, but, must comment (not very interesting reading) on a few oldies but goodies: Back on 7/3 CKarma wrote: Top of my dumb list is the advanced cinematic masterpiece of melodrama from Cher, "Dark Lady." Now me: Chris, next time you are over, please don't mention that to Brad... Then on July 4, my beloved Rev wrote: I was out of town and thus as not here to comment that I always liked Rosemary Clooney, have one of her cds (wanted "Seems Like Old Times") and she was a person affected by the 60s as any of us, and came back strong for the latter part of her career. I hope she found personal happiness -- she deserved it, she was a good person. Now me: Vince, Brad and I saw Rosemary on November 15, 2001 at the Don Ho show in Honolulu. She was in a wheelchair. Don asked her to sing and she did Comma, Comma My house (sure I got that wrong) from her chair in the audience, acapella (sp?). The next night she performed with the HNL Symphony and was wonderful. Because she performed with the Glendale (CA) Symphony in the past and Brad's Mother was the artistic director of that orchestra, we called the HNL symphony (who knew his Mom) and asked for seats, they gave us first row! She was in good voice and did at least ten old numbers of hers. Imagine our sad surprise at that news!! The lovely Anne Sandstrom wrote on 7/9: hmmm.... the list seems rather inactive - maybe it's just too hot? Please try not to take it personally, Colin. You're not the only one to post something, only to have no one (or almost no one) respond lately? Is there anyone one board? Now me: That goes to my point earlier and by the way, happy anniversary, Colin!! Then on 7/10 a note from Hell included: Kerry and I went to see Diana Krall and the Auckland Philharmonia in concert tonight. She was amazing (as expected), and in fine voice. We were hoping to hear A Case of You, but doubted very much that she'd play it, since (from what I've heard) she didn't seem to perform it on her recent tour of the US. BUT....... the lights dimmed, and one sole spotlight hit centre-stage. During her piano introduction, we weren't sure if it was or not, then....... "Just before our love got lost......" Wow! It was slightly different than her version for the Joni Tribute, but just as wonderful. And it was incredible to see and hear her perform it live! Now me: Hell and Kerry...hmmmm. Jimmy and I said in Vancouver last year that a man should never sing ACOY and I am so glad Ms. Krall did it!! Again. And congrats to you two for your new friendship courtesy of the JMDL!! Did ya like NZ, Kerry? On 7/16, DBF, old (and I mean old) roommate and David Crosby reader Jimmy writes: I've enjoyed many of Dolly Parton's songs, but I just heard some clips from her recent CD "Halos & Horns". There are some lovely songs, but I can't believe she attempts "Stairway to Heaven"!!!. Actually she does a better job on that song than Bread's "IF". You'll have to go to cdnow.com and listen to THAT sample. LOL Now me: Jimmy, that is the best thing Dolly has done since *Here You Come Again* (again?). I LOVE this album -- it has been on the CD player since it arrived!! Also on 7/19 PaulC wrote: Columbia Records release 'October Road' -- the first new James Taylor studio album since 1997's Hourglass, which won that year's Grammy award for "Best Pop Album" -- to stores on Tuesday, August 13. Now me: We saw JT at the Hollywood Bowl on 7/3 and he (apologetically) did several songs from his new CD. I dutifully (and in the dark) wrote down his set list to share with the list. Then I promptly, yet inadvertently, threw it in the bag that stayed at the Bowl with the empty wine bottles. He was so amazing. It was an interesting choice for the Bowl to have him as the guest artist on the July 4 series, but his rendition of *On the 4th of July* from his new album was wonderful. That's as far as I got with the JM emails. On another note, I was at a dinner party during the month and was surprised to be sitting with Larry Klein. He wasn't very talkative at all. Mostly he talked about Concrete Love, but was mum on the subject of JM, despite my frequent nudges and mentions of my love for her work and his contributions. He was a total gentleman. After sunset I came in to catch some TV only to find on PBS some glamour girl singing a bouncy "I wish I were in Love again" with Piano four hands playing Bouncy Allegro, none of the biting, been there, felt that dish hit my head, that Joni put into her version on BSN. So now that I am siting in my office late at night listening to the crickets and to the BSN cd I get to reading the lyric's to "Comes Love" and I see the yellow roses Joni painted on the opposite page and It hit me that Joni should have a rose named after her. I have been hybdizing roses and my first sucess was crossing "New Dawn" with "Bonica" and resulting in a medium pink climber that I named "Rosenbaum" after the summer camp I work at for a week each year. I have been crossing the Yelow Roses in my garden this year also so in 2003 I see the results. The Crossing of "Pollen to Ovium" is best done early in the summer to enable the hips to set fat and fertile seeds. this spring I sowed at least 200 seed and had only a dozen actually germinate. After looking in many Rose books at yellow roses an educated guess might be that Joni has a bush or two of the Rose called "Graceland" which is a Jackson & Perkins rose brought out in 1988 and is bred from a rose called New Day from 1977 which was bred from two obscure varieties, Arlene Francis X Roselandia. Bringing out a new variety of rose is a lengthy process a variety must get a patent and MS Mitchell would have to agree to having one rose represent her. Maybe all this is the just ramblings of a hopelessly romantic Rosemane, or it could result in fragrant yellow roses sitting in a yellow vase on a table next to your favorite picture of Joni. One last note I did have a brief dinner with Ashara in Portsmouth N.H.I just have one word to describe her: "Wonderwoman" N.P. In one of the few interviews I read with the Twins, Elizabeth Fraser resolutely refused to offer any explanation as to what their songs were about; however, she did say they were actual words she sang, ie she'd sing the same words when they did the song live, as most other singers would do; she wasn't just making it up as she went along. She wouldn't divulge what the language was, though! Anyway, she did partially explain the strange business of song titles: they HAD to call the songs something ("you can't just say 'you know, the one that goes la la la' "), for publishing reasons if nothing else. So don't read too much into them! I know that some of the titles are names of butterflies or moths (Pale Clouded White, Great Spangled Fritillary); others are arcane first names like Persephone, Ottilie, Amelia (yes!) and Ivo (a nod to the founder of 4AD records). And some are rather more mischievous: as anyone who understands German will know, the literal translation of Fotzepolitic is "cunt politics" - is this the Cocteau Twins having a little joke?? In the light of that, why not have a song where the word tampon is reapeated ad infinitum? << You know, as much as I love them, and as much as I wore out "Treasure" and "Victorialand" on vinyl, you gotta wonder what the hell she's gotta be on to make up that stuff. >> Well, she has certainly alluded to "personal problems" - I think it would take more than those to produce such extraordinary sounds. Trivia I know but hey...what's in a name. I love a challenge! From the article database (http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/951209bb.cfm), I found this: Bill Anderson had met his young wife, the former Myrtle "Mickey" Marguerite McKee, while she was working in a bank in Regina, Saskatchewan, and they had run off to Medicine Hat, Alberta, for a hasty wedding. Less than a year later, on Nov. 7, 1943, daughter Roberta Joan Anderson ("They wanted a boy named Robert John," Joni notes) entered the distressed picture that was her parents wartime subsistence. But it doesn't explain why she was known as Joni or Joan, not Roberta, and I can't find any reference to it (in the relatively short time I've spent looking). Does anyone else know? In articles where her childhood friends talk about her as a child, you never hear them refer to her as Roberta. Sometimes parents will give a child a family name, or a more formal first name, and then refer to them by a middle name or something else altogether. I don't think it means all that much. They probably meant to call her Joan in any case and thought that the order of Roberta Joan sounded better than Joan Roberta. Brian, what a great idea! I have so much respect (and envy) for people who go to this kind of trouble (hybridizing roses in your case), because I'm basically lazy and inept about that sort of thing. Just keeping my one rose bush alive is about all I can aspire to. I don't know about where other listers live, but this year, the roses in Toronto have been absolutely spectacular - I guess it's the weather we've been having. I so admire people who have that kind of passion about anything - I tend to be a bit (a bit?) more laissez-faire about just about everything. It would be great if you could be the one to develop the Joni Mitchell rose. ______________________________________________________________________ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 09:42:47 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: Roberta J Anderson...what's in a name In a message dated 26/07/02 14:30:07 GMT Daylight Time, anima_rising@yahoo.ca writes: << Two of my sisters are called by their 2nd names, i.e., Mary Margaret is known as Margaret or Maggie; Patricia Anne is known as Anne, or Annie. Alison, after only three short days without ciggys, believes that she is Laura Bush, First Lady of these here United States of America... Colin, four days off fags, sings like Carly, looks like Carly, has the dogs barking their fool heads off... Kakki, two days shy of a cigarette begins to have Grace VanOwen delusions. I'm a casual fan of Counting Crows, but my son is devoted, so he had the new album at 7:00 the morning it was released. Since he really liked the BYT cover as well, I was curious how other loyal CC fans felt about it. Sooo, I hopped on their website and checked out the message boards. Sure enough there was a lot of conversation - mostly along the lines of "what is that song?" One person even claimed it was a cover of an Amy Grant original!! I started to refer them to Bob's excellent database of covers, but I refrained. Then I ran across this crazy girl ranting about how Adam Duritz had totally subverted Joni's song by changing the lyrics and completely altering the meaning of the song. HUH? I didn't remember any drastic lyrical changes, except to alter gender where appropriate. But this girl insists that Duritz changed the song from a politically aware song about the ecology to a silly love song. HUH? Joni? Overtly political? Did I miss a meeting? Then a couple days ago Adam Duritz posted a new diary entry - apparently he actually reads the message boards. He took off on this particular thread - he was stumped as to what she was talking about as well. He goes on to wax eloquent about Joni's genius as a songwriter. Restored my faith in my own ability to interpret a song at least. Check it out at the website - countingcrows.com. I'm too ignorant to post a link, but the link to the diary entry is on the front page of the website. Sybil n.p. I've also got the live version where Adam introduces the song by saying that Joni was recording right down the hall, and came over to their studio to listen. Duritz tried to run & hide, intimidated by his idol, but couldn't get away and was pleased that she grooved on it as well. Wonderful album, "Night On My Side", it's already got under my skin after only two listens. It's very varied in mood and volume, nothing is overstated, her voice has an effortless presence, even though it's not the most anything-in-particular voice I've ever heard. She doesn't sound much like anyone, though there are shades of one singer, and can I dredge up from my memory banks who it is?? She's got the Ingredient X I look for, and is worthy of our attention. The new Bowie, which I also purchased today, really is good, and finally lives up to the "best since Scary Monsters" tag that has unfailingly been appended to every album he's made since he got Tin Machine out of his system. I've rarely watched TV as an adult but did check out LA Law when I could back then (when I wasn't working all night) because many of the funny and quirkier stories were lifted right from the law firm I was working at the time. The management was always trying to figure out who was the leaker(s). I remember the famous one about the nasty dragon lady female partner who fell down the elevator shaft. The real story was that the nasty female partner fell down a couple floors in the elevator late one night and then was stuck in there all night long. She was found in the morning a raving mess and was not much heard from after that! Good show, and it did take me a long, long time to get over my Harry Hamblin crush ;-) Rob/Evian as Ozzy? I'd love to see that! Good luck quitting. At the constant nagging of my friends, I quit for all of three days once at which point they were all begging me to start again.
