Due to reasons beyond my control I am not going to be able to attend this year's fest :( I was looking foward to matching text with faces, I guess I have to wait another year. Let me tell you a litle bit about myself, so you can pretend we had a real and wonderful getting-to-know-eachother moment. I am 28 years old.....I grew up in southwestern NH, but have traveled to France, Italy, Jamaica, and Mexico, and lived in northern CA for several years (Arcata). Obviously my passion for Joni is due to the fact that music and poetry have been a main focal point throughout my entire life. I've been listening to and loving Joni since I was a wee little girl and now play her music to my 13 month old daughter, Nya, all of the time (I also have my husband hooked!). I can't pick a favorite period because everytime I think I have a favorite something else fills my head and I am reborn again!!! Currently I am full blown obsessed with DJRD, lisening over and over and over....soon it will be locked into my DNA code. I am an intense daydreamer and and at times impulsive to a fault....I have my degree in Art History but plan to try my hand at silversmithing/jewelry design once I stop being a stay-at-home-mom. Other music I enjoy: Neil Young, Nina Simone, Jill Scott, Greyboy Allstars, JAZZ< JAZZ AND MORE JAZZ, almost all Reggae, Stevie Wonder, Michael Hedges, and of course Bob Dylan. Reading is also a passion, my walls are lined with books of all sujects: quantum physics, tons of Alan Watts, Buddhism, Dutch Renaissance painting, several geological studies of New England, Ella Fitzgerald's biography, and lots of Kurt Vonnegut....you get the idea...I like to read! Well sorry if I've bored you, but it was cathartic for me, it's just like we've sat over a dry martini on the porch at the Full Moon Resort. The sad part is I'll have to wait for next year to hear your stories :( I hope this year's Fest is wonderful and tickles you all silly. See you next year! Roger suggested a song to Joni that he wanted her to perform in the upcoming concert, but she told him she'd prefer to do a different one. He agreed and re-arranged the line-up of singers and songs to accommodate her. Joni also requested that she be sent a tape of the backing tracks so she could practice. Joni was joined onstage by flutist James Galway, performing with a pre-recorded backing track on the song "Goodbye, Blue Sky." She also re-appeared at the finale and sang a few solo lines for "The Tide Is Turning" clustered with Sinead O'Connor, Thomas Dolby and Bryan Adams at one side of an elevated platform. (tho i really do think her cover of "peace train" was, to say the least, woeful..) as far as ladysmith black mambazo are concerned, they are imho one of the greatest acapella groups in the world. im hoping to get to their 42nd anniversary concert in about 2 weeks time - theyve been around a while. ladysmith is the town in which they formed, black is fairly self explanatory, and mambazo is a type of spear traditionally used by the zulu nation. i was watching a interview with joseph shabalala, the founder of lmb recently. he was a normal musician, playing guitar, pennywhistle etc, & struggling to survive. then one night he had a dream in which he saw a choir singing in a strange language, in a strange style which he had never heard before. he woke up, put together a choir (mainly his brothers), taught them to sing as he heard in his dream, and the rest was history. lmb has long been the most successful group in soujth africa, selling millions of records, which is noo small accomplishment in such a small market. i also enjoyed shabalalas account of his meeting with paul simon. he says this small, shy polite man, who, believe it or not, hed never heard of, walked up to him, and said "Hi, im Paul Simon, maybe we can work together". Shabalala took one look at this man, saw him as being full of light and music, and said "we will work together!!" - the result was graceland.. ron np - carol laula - stay with me angel - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 18:02:33 +0100 From: "Chris Marshall" Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: UK Jonifest 2002 Eeeek. I need to know:- o When you'll be arriving Friday - late morning Friday - evening Saturday - late morning Saturday - late afternoon/evening (This helps me figure out how many I'm catering for at each mealtime.) o Dietary requirements o Whether you can find a place to stay (i.e. friends in the locality) or if you need numbers for local accomodation. Floor space has gone, I'm afraid. o Whether you want to get up and play some songs at some point. I propose to buy all of the food and *some* booze in advance, so plan to extort money from each of you on arrival. Probably without menaces though :) Once I know who's coming when, and for how long, I'll try and set a fair price. I hope that's OK, but I can't afford to pay for everything myself, and it all gets a bit disorganised when everyone's bringing food. I was fortunate enough to have presented Dave and his partner Tracy Grammer four times at the Living Trad series, indeed they opened the series when it started up again four years ago. Dave and Tracy toured with Joan Baez and Richard Shindell earlier this year. They were on the verge of much wider recognition. Reading the tributes at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Dave-and-Tracy/ I realize how much Dave touched others as he did Michele and I. And he sang of his passing, in the first song on their first CD: "And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines Do not worry for my comfort, do not sorrow for me so All your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me When I go." What does "O.G. mean? Interestingly, of the 8 artists profiled, Joni's in the only one sentence that is all 100 positive... depending on what "O.G." means. Not too impressed with the way Avril Lavigne is presenting herself, but then self proclaimed bar brawlers never impressed me. THIS IS TRUE: I was telling a lister just a few weeks ago about a outfit I was going to wear sometime to the fest; crow like...long black robe...makeup....and...a crow that I bought marked down after Halloween last year.(walking thur Wal-mart..I see a crow and think of Joni. I quote: In February, Eric contributed to the new Joni Mitchell documentary for Delilah Films, in New York. He was interviewed in Oslo and performed 2 songs while also demonstrating guitar tunings. In 1965, he taught Joni her very first open tunings in Detroit. Just Out! Eric's latest release, Live At the Mudd Club has just been released on MP3 in late February. It was recorded at the famous New York underground music showcase, in 1982. The album features two songs of Eric's that were never recorded or released until now: "Pick Up The Pieces" and "Don't Stop." And be sure to check out "Blue River." It is the only version with Joni Mitchell singing harmonies that has ever been recorded live on stage. Ive not been a very attentive reader of the JMDL of late Im afraid, so these might have already been brought to everyones attention. But I thought they were worth reporting!
