From JoniMitchell.com: "Joni got some bad press for walking offstage five times during the show. Whether her frustration resulted from malfunctioning equipment, or from the audience being too noisy, in reality it was a combination of the show being a rare one for Joni in the daytime, the crowd's natural rowdiness adding distraction, and the disappointing fact that this concert was at the end of a long, grueling tour played in venues that were mostly only about 2/3 full." Still I think the self-titled one is stunning, especially the first three songs, Mercury (which brings tears to my eyes), Little Fox and The Moon And The Sun. There's a mystical, ethereal quality to the lyrics and the melodies that touches something very deep in me. And then there's her voice: poised, vulnerable, warm yet slightly distanced, and not always smack on the note. The most recent studio album, Miracle, is pretty good too. She's been virtually silent since then, with just a compilation to show for her pains. Come back Heidi, where are you? The last time I saw her was at the 12 Bar, a tiny London venue known to a number of members of this parish - in fact didn't I drag Martin Giles along?? She sounded a bit rusty if memory serves, though she was on good form when I buttonholed her after the gig, and agreed that the Heidi Berry album was the best one she'd done!! Azeem in London NP: Heidi Berry, of course - Love. NJC I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION, (SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE), INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL San Francisco (SatireWire.com) A U.S. federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is unconstitutional because it contains the phrase "under God," a decision blasted by Democrats, Republicans, and brand managers who say the United States is making a grave mistake in dropping its principal sponsor. "Over the years, the U.S. under God has been a great draw for the major players Einstein, Solzhenitsyn, John Lennon," said government marketing analyst Gil Treacle. "Without God's brand recognition and infinite marketing powers, you risk losing the marquee names to competitors. Then the networks don't renew, the money dries up, the fans revolt, and the next thing you know, you're Argentina." The U.S. Justice Department, assigned the difficult task of finding a replacement, said it has already been in contact with several entities ("One nation, but 24,000 Starbucks") interested in having their brands associated with America. Until an agreement is reached, however, the U.S. will advertise the position by replacing the phrase "One nation, under God," with "One nation, (sponsorship opportunities available)." While the words "under God" were only added to the Pledge by Congress in 1954, God has been the title patron of the United States since its founding in 1776, and the God name adorns everything from U.S. currency to the phrase "So help me God" used to swear in the President. The three-judge panel who voted to sever that 226-year relationship has come under heavy fire, but many have defended the decision, saying it is wrong to force religion on anyone. "The phrase 'under God' clearly violates the First Amendment's separation of church and state," said McDonald's CEO Jack Greenberg. "However, there is nothing in the Constitution that separates chicken and state, which is why we're proposing, 'One nation, six chicken McNuggets and a medium Coke, all for $1.99.'" A handful of Americans, however, has insisted the United States can get along just fine without a primary sponsor. Their suggestion that the Pledge phrase be regularly updated to reflect the national condition, however, has so far attracted little interest, as a CNN/Gallup poll found only 10 percent of respondents would feel comfortable reciting "One nation, under indictment." Europeans, meanwhile, seemed to be confused by the entire episode. "I don't understand. I always thought it was 'One nation, we are God,'" said British Prime Minister Tony Blair. "Oh my, I've been worshipping them for nothing." God, in various forms, currently supports most nations, with the exception of officially atheist China and Vietnam, and the Netherlands, which hasn't been told yet but is in for a nasty shock tomorrow. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 10:09:55 -0400 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Bush campaign contributors break for Mexico NJC REMAINING U.S. CEOs MAKE A BREAK FOR IT Band of Roving Chief Executives Spotted Miles from Mexican Border El Paso, Texas (SatireWire.com) Unwilling to wait for their eventual indictments, the 10,000 remaining CEOs of public U.S. companies made a break for it yesterday, heading for the Mexican border, plundering towns and villages along the way, and writing the entire rampage off as a marketing expense. "They came into my home, made me pay for my own TV, then double-booked the revenues," said Rachel Sanchez of Las Cruces, just north of El Paso. "Right in front of my daughters." Calling themselves the CEOnistas, the chief executives were first spotted last night along the Rio Grande River near Quemado, where they bought each of the town's 320 residents by borrowing against pension fund gains. By late this morning, the CEOnistas had arbitrarily inflated Quemado's population to 960, and declared a 200 percent profit for the fiscal second quarter. This morning, the outlaws bought the city of Waco, transferred its underperforming areas to a private partnership, and sent a bill to California for $4.5 billion. Law enforcement officials and disgruntled shareholders riding posse were noticeably frustrated. "First of all, they're very hard to find because they always stand behind their numbers, and the numbers keep shifting," said posse spokesman Dean Levitt. "And every time we yell 'Stop in the name of the shareholders!', they refer us to investor relations. I've been on the phone all damn morning." "YOU'LL NEVER AUDIT ME ALIVE!" The pursuers said they have had some success, however, by preying on a common executive weakness. "Last night we caught about 24 of them by disguising one of our female officers as a CNBC anchor," said U.S. Border Patrol spokesperson Janet Lewis. "It was like moths to a flame." Also, teams of agents have been using high-powered listening devices to scan the plains for telltale sounds of the CEOnistas. "Most of the time we just hear leaves rustling or cattle flicking their tails," said Lewis, "but occasionally we'll pick up someone saying, 'I was totally out of the loop on that.'" Among former and current CEOs apprehended with this method were Computer Associates' Sanjay Kumar, Adelphia's John Rigas, Enron's Ken Lay, Joseph Nacchio of Qwest, Joseph Berardino of Arthur Andersen, and every Global Crossing CEO since 1997. ImClone Systems' Sam Waksal and Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco were not allowed to join the CEOnistas as they have already been indicted. So far, about 50 chief executives have been captured, including Martha Stewart, who was detained south of El Paso where she had cut through a barbed-wire fence at the Zaragosa border crossing off Highway 375. "She would have gotten away, but she was stopping motorists to ask for marzipan and food coloring so she could make edible snowman place settings, using the cut pieces of wire for the arms," said Border Patrol officer Jennette Cushing. "We put her in cell No. 7, because the morning sun really adds texture to the stucco walls." While some stragglers are believed to have successfully crossed into Mexico, Cushingsaid the bulk of the CEOnistas have holed themselves up at the Alamo. "No, not the fort, the car rental place at the airport," she said. "They're rotating all the tires on the minivans and accounting for each change as a sale." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 15:18:39 +0000 From: "Timothy Spong" Subject: Re: "Escort and Spark" (indirect JC) Yesterday, I was looking through the July 15 issue of "Editor and Publisher," the trade magazine for journalism. In fact, that was my mommy tag line whenever she didn't like something I decided: "I'm not here to be your friend. I'm here to give you the tools to be a responsible adult." Believe it or not, now that she is in her twenties, we are the best of friends because she is mature enough to accept that responsibility. My heart is at peace that she can take care of herself now. It's hard to cut the apron strings, yet that is the whole purpose of rearing children. I took my role as a parent very seriously. I agonized over it because I knew that I was flawed as a human being, and I did not want to pass those flaws on to my child. I remember purposely trying to teach her how to wake up and get going in the morning because I had so much trouble doing so. I did not want her to miss out on the chance to live life to the fullest. Being undisciplined and uncaring keeps a child from growing to his or her full potential. Parents are not doing their kids any favors when they let them just run amuck without any thought or care as to the consequences of their actions. If a parent loves their child, they have to set some sort of boundaries and limits for the child's sake until the child is old enough and responsible enough to set their own. That's my two cents anyway. It was the 2nd date on their tour, and from the moment they launched into "Siberian Khatru" they were ON it! Jon Anderson was in fine voice, and everybody was bangin' on all cylinders. Each player took a solo turn; one nice highlight was during Wakeman's solo section when Anderson came out and sang part of "And You And I", just the two of them. I could see (through my binocs) that Wakeman was looking to the other guys for cues, and reading music for some of the stuff that he was not originally on. He was reaching between two keyboards much of the time, although these days there is no Mellotron and no big wall of modular Moog. It was interesting to view the guys as medieval achetypes: Anderson the ethereal, elflike nature spirit, Howe looking very much the wizard, Squire the mighty warrior, Wakeman as Prince Valiant, White maybe a knight's valet (though that does not do justice to his masterful drumming). While it was hot outside, and a million bugs were trying to hog the spotlight, the setting at Konocti was quite nice, little treed islands on the lake looked like the Roger Dean artwork that has graced many an album cover. What a sweet connection! I wouldn't know if he's still with them or not, but I wonder. When I have heard them live before their sound was impeccable. The sound last night was my only complaint - I'm not sure what was the problem but it was a pretty muddled. The L.A. Philharmonic backed them up for a change - a promising idea - but maybe there were just too many people in the mix. Plus, the Bowl is notorious for sound problems at times. Sergio now has three girl singers - his wife Gracinha Leporace, Jessica Taylor and Kevyn Lettau, who has done some wonderful Joni covers and who plays here regularly at La Ve Lee. They sounded just like the original girls from '66! They played most of their classics - Mas Que Nada, Look of Love, Tristeza, Scarborough Fair, Fool on the Hill, plus the classic Brazilian Desafinado, Waters of March and One-Note Samba. The group Pink Martini was also outstanding and seemed to have many hardcore fans in the crowd. I think Sergio should go back to playing a bit smaller venue, like the Greek or Wiltern, though! Minor Joni content - in the Hollywood Bowl program there is a review of the Chieftains new 70 minute CD "The Wide World Over - a 40 Year Celebration." It sounds incredible. The reviewer had this to say "Artists such as Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, and especially Joni Mitchell on her chilling track "The Magdalene Laundries," tend to overshadow the band to whom this is a tribute, but willingness to accompany is also part of the Chieftains' charm."
