Some time ago Kakki wrote to say that she had been to see Jonatha Brooke in LA and had been knocked out by the young support act Maia Sharp (daughter of songwriter Randy Sharp). Not long after she sent me a copy of Simon & Garfunkel's amazing 1968 Holywood Bowl concert. And more recently Kate raved about Maia Sharp who she had seen supporting Patty Griffin. -- so here's the news: >Art Garfunkel With Maia Sharp & Buddy Mondlock >'Everything Waits to Be Noticed' >Released on Manhattan Records - OCTOBER 8, 2002 and more... >* Long Lost Simon & Garfunkel Concert From 1967 Surfaces on >Sony Legacy ---- A missing chapter in Simon & Garfunkel's rich >musical history will be revealed on Tuesday, July 16, when >Columbia/Legacy releases "Live From New York City 1967." >The 19-track disc was recorded at Lincoln Center in Manhattan >on January 22, 1967, and has never before been officially released >as a concert album. and more.... >Columbia Records release 'October Road' -- the first new >James Taylor studio album since 1997's Hourglass, which won >that year's Grammy award for "Best Pop Album" -- to stores on >Tuesday, August 13. and finally... It was a pleasure to read! I don't think kids are much more different today than they were back when I was a kid. I've witnessed some pretty cruel things myself as a kid. I've even done a few things that I'm not proud of. I think it is just human nature to "test the waters". The scientific method is what makes kids grow and learn. The big difference that I do see today is the lack of discipline. I really think the kids today are begging for it, they require it to become fully functional human beings in a civil society and most adults are too scared, don't care, or just too darn tired today to deal with it. So the kids just keep pushing the envelope even further. I have no words to adequately explain Kodo ... They are a group of percussionists -- there are also two flutists -- from Japan, with incredible energy and spirit. They literally put their entire bodies (and souls, it seems) into their playing. The intense joy emanating from the stage last night was awesome to behold, and it wrapped itself around the audience and included everyone in the magic. Here are a couple of excerpts from Kodo's website (http://www.kodo.or.jp): - ----- Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo are forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. In Japanese the word "Kodo" conveys two meanings: Firstly, "heartbeat" the primal source of all rhythm. The sound of the great taiko is said to resemble a mother's heartbeat as felt in the womb, and it is no myth that babies are often lulled asleep by its thunderous vibrations. Secondly, read in a different way, the word can mean "children of the drum," a reflection of Kodo's desire to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child. - ----- Our small planet is filled with a huge variety of people from different cultures who often have very different ways of living. In this world, it is more important than ever that people find ways to live together harmoniously. In ancient Japan the taiko was a symbol of the rural community and it is said that the limits of the village were defined not by geography but by the furthest distance at which the taiko could be heard. It is Kodo's hope with the One Earth Tour to bring the sound of the taiko to people around the globe, so that we may all be reminded of our membership in that much larger community: the world. - ----- Kodo's USA tour schedule: http://www.kodo.or.jp/perf/kodoperf/sche7-8-2002.html If you have a chance to see them -- ever -- DO. If you receive any sort of WORK, whether via e-mail, the Internet, or simply handed to you by a colleague, do not open it. Those who have opened WORK have found that their social life is deleted and their brain ceases to function properly. If you do encounter WORK via e-mail or are faced with any WORK at all, purge the virus by sending an e-mail to your boss with the words 'This is too much for me, I'm going out for a soda. This better not be here when I get back.' Your brain should automatically delete the WORK. If you receive WORK in paper document form, simply lift the document and drag the WORK to your trash can. Send this message to all your friends in your address book. If you do not have anyone in your address book, then the WORK virus has already corrupted your life! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 18:53:26 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: Art & Maia + JT news (NJC) Paul, We can always count on you to have a sharp eye out (no pun intended ;-) on the latest music happenings and synchronicities!
