HMMMMM....I'm not a parent...but was a child once and I changed many a diaper. I would have not made a good parent..I'm too selfish...and I like to go when I feel the urge. Diapers? go when you feel the urge?? I'll leave that alone ;-) It's good that you realize that you would not make a good parent, Bree. I see many parents who just can't handle their children whether they are just too lazy or beaten down. There is no doubt about it ... children are work! That is if you want them to grow up to be quality individuals. I'm not sure how old you are Bree but when I, too, was growing up we were taught to have respect for elders. I guess those elders mainly being family members. I must admit ... there was a certain fear factor that all six of us had of our parents. We definitely had lines we DARED not cross. My parents didn't try to be my friend either. They were authoritarians. They were responsible for the well-being of six children and I must say, they did a pretty decent job. We were never without food, clothing and a very nice place to live. We each received one really nice toy for Christmas. We were taught to make it last 'cause there would be no replacements. Maybe it is a sign of our society. The recent generation has been brought up in the 'disposable' society. I think it carries over into many aspects of their lives. I was a single parent for many years. One daughter. I am proud of her but I see where she becomes trapped in this 'disposable world'. Any thoughts on this influence? Heather PS - I have taught college students. All I can say is that .... I've seen all types ... and man o' man the excuses I hear!! I think I will publish them sometime :-) ___________ The rest of what Bree wrote: So it is just as well that I can not have children. I just know when I was a child I never wanted to bring shame to my parents...I had tremendous respect. It was always in my mind somewhere when I was doing something I should not have been: What would mother and daddy think? My siblings and I had curfews and certain things were expected....lines we could not cross. Certain language was out...I never, never would have dreamed of calling my parents some of the names I've heard kids call their parents today. I think in most cases it is upbringing.....and what you said....trying to be more of a friend than a parent. Frankly, my parents never tried to be my friend because they were not, they gave birth. We had fun times too...but they were my parents first. Oh and there are social problems that enter into it too. One parent homes....two parents homes where both work and the kids run wild. I feel sorry for some kids today....they are forced to grow up way before they are ready. This is what scares me. Childhood is so short and fleeting..why encourage grown up things? I think of these little girls in the beauty pageants. It sickens me...make-up, halter tops. I want to smack some sense into the mother. I think it is child abuse!! (it makes my blood boil) Well....I thank God I did not choose teaching as a profession...I've heard too many horror stories from teacher friends of mine. I think teachers should be paid more than than almost any profession I can think of. Quadruple what they make now. (raise upon raise every year) Anyway...I've zigzagged a little...but a very interesting topic. Bree n.p. Actually a number of my friends at Comiskey are working musicans and among the sports fans that I know at many levels - granted I don't hang out with NASCAR folks - the range of interests and knowlege is as varied there as it is in the JMDL. And when to the University of Michigan football games, the PhD percentage of fans goes way up. Last year before one of the games we were having a fascinating discussion on the legacy of Rabalais. The guy who runs the Sox message boards wrote his dissertation on "Conversion as Ethical Intersubjective Temporality: The Time for Religion and Change in the Work of Emmanuel Levinas." We have to have something to talk about during time outs! We may look like we are all dumb jock sports fans, but never stereotype... I wasn't surprised that people waxed eloquently on Joni Mitchell, although that was pleasant; what made my day was when the one dude popped up with the lyrics to Amelia to argue his point that she was the best songwriter ever. He had to have those lyrics right at hand to have posted them so fast - so that's a real Joni fan out there. The consensus of White Sox fans is that the body should be taken away from that theiving and corrupt John Henry and that Ted should be cremated. And that the Red Sox are cursed and will never beat the Yankees. However, we also we are cursed. What we need is a magic elixir like from Donatelli's opera... White Sox had a mild fever but it gone, just as outrseason is. I will have to deal with the fact that our government seems determined to go to war with Iraq as quickly as possible - why is it that Saudis run Al Queda and we have war against Afghnistan and soon Iraq? Oh yes, we have oil contracts with the Saudis - anyway, while we look for a pretense for war, I am having a few moments of peace enjoying baseball. Real life intrudes all too quickly and painfully. And I will be among the first in line on Carlton Fisk bobble headed doll day! If I don't get my Carlton Fisk bobble headed doll, that would be like letting the terrorists win. Osama bin Laden, you will never get your terrorists hands on my White Sox bobble headed doll collection! Maybe someone should sell folkie bobble headed dolls - Joni, Baez, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan... free to the first 10,000 fans at whatever concert - would pack the place out. The Grateful Dead cry out for bobble headed dolls. Then you could sell them in bobble headed doll sets: first your CS&N set, Y sold separately, then a CSN&Y set, then a S and an N sold separately, C&N together - then the reunion set - the possibilies for the bobble headed dolls boyfriends of Joni Mitchell would be a collectors dream, look at all the bobble headed dolls you'd have to buy to have a complete set!. I make a great aunt though! I take a lot of interest in my nieces and nephews...they know that I love them and they can come to me anytime. Recently I bought a new car, so I gave my old car to a nephew. When I say gave, he had to earn it...he had to help several weekends in my yard...... do some interior painting.....I think earning something helps children realize the value of things better. (besides I needed this work done) ;-) >There is no doubt about it ... children are work! Absolutely!! I'm just glad that I can unload them....give them back when I'm finished with them. I think respect is really lacking....I'm thinking of a teacher I know.....when she relays some of these stories to me....I'm incredulous. They call her names....get up from their seats without asking permission.... leave the classroom, she told me she feels like a glorified babysitter. She has to really modify her lessons (dumb-down) because of the short attention spans. She could hardly wait to get out of there and get home...I told her it sounds like leaving a battlefield. But you can not hit little Tommy because she would find a big fat lawsuit waiting for her. I feel sorry for her because she can't really teach like she wanted or thought it would be like this. I guess those elders mainly being family members. I >must admit ... there was a certain fear factor that all six of us had of >our >parents. We definitely had lines we DARED not cross. Yeah..the trappings, we are all caught up in this...not just children or young adults. Disposable world....I do have some thoughts on this....abortion on demand, euthanasia, and a myriad of other things. I think these things have devalued...cheapened us and we really don't know the full effect..not for years to come.
