One has a organic slant to the far right and the other has an organic slant to the far left. Please, William Buckley Jr. founded the National Review for one purpose, and it fulfills that purpose admirably, to be a mouthpiece of conservative Republican apologetics. I am well familiar with the publication. There is nothing wrong with it being a partisan magazine; that has a place in the national discourse. But it is not objective, was never meant to be, and it isn't. As for Bush, Cheney, and the corporate inside traders: when your best campaign contributor and key insider in the circle is Kenneth Lay of Enron and you are in the oil busiiness and the sleazy ethics of the giant corporations is being revealed (oops, there was a 4 billion dollar mistake in our reports) and the campaign was based on "restoring integrity" you can be sure that Bush will be judged by the same measure with which he judged others. It also takes a lot of gall to propose criminalizing behavior that Bush himself admittedly engaged in, no matter how Ari Fleischer tried to spin that today. In the end, the politics you take is equal to the politics you make. After all that was made over Whitewater, do you think honestly this is going to go away? If you go back in the archives far enough, you will find that I suggested in early 2000 that the only Republican who could cleanly run for the presidency was McCain. That still holds. My original choice for the Democrats was Bradley. Gore beat out Bradley legitimately while Bush used some incredible hatchet techniques on McCain in Michigan and South Carolina. And who funded those attacks on McCain? A lot of Bush's former business partners in the oil business. The chickens are coming home to roost, as they always do. Bush and Cheney are big boys. We shall now see them take what they dished out. That is a part of life. What exactly did Bush admit to that was "criminal?" Not knowing why one of the SEC forms wasn't filled out in a timely manner? Please read the link from National Review. You still don't get my point or choose to ignore it. I'm all for locking up anyone who breaks the law. But first they have to be tried in a court of law and convicted of it, you know? They are not all guilty just because people who don't like them think they are guilty or wish they were guilty. They are certainly not automatically guilty because they are wealthy or have worked in the oil business. And when they are tried or investigated and cleared, their should not be a call to re-try and re-try them over and over until one gets their desired outcome. What the hell kind of kangaroo courts are people advocating? And only for Republicans, of course. Here's some links about Clinton/Gore and the Democrats are Enron for your perusal (and which appear to be from both leftist and "mainstream" media) http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020408&c=1&s=greider http://www.unionleader.com/articles_show.html?article=10765 http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/search/s_7142.html http://www.opensecrets.org/alerts/v6/enron_cong_house.asp > If you go back in the archives far enough, you will find that I > suggested in early 2000 that the only Republican who could cleanly run > for the presidency was McCain. But what was up with that hunk of hair hanging off of Anakin's head? I would've paid good money to jump on the set with a pair of clippers! Oh, and you'd think if one was going to spend SO much money on visuals, they could throw some good coinage to someone who could write a script. That is too bad and considering the stinking state of music here, in my opinion, maybe we need to import some as I can think of at least three that are simply marvelous. I have never seen a Star Wars movie. I am totally unable to suspend disbelief for sci-fi. And if the characters are wearing masks, like Darth Vader, I can't lip-read, so I *really* don't know what's going on. But synchronized swimming, ah . . . it's my one true love. C'mon in, Bob! Off the top of my head I can come up with a number of UK artists who have been on the singles and albums charts. The singles chart has definitely seen less activity than albums but I think that's because singles have been driven by r&b, rap and rhythm based pop. As far as singles go - Spice Girls were still on the chart in 97 and 98. I'm fairly sure that the Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" hit the Hot 100 last year and Robbie Williams may have cracked it as well. Dido had a huge hit single with "Thank You." Dirty Vegas is in the Top 20 right now with "Days Go By." Craig David has had a couple of singles in the Hot 100. Albums - Radiohead, David Gray, Bush, Jamiroquai, U2, Blur, Gorillaz, Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Craig David, Dido and those are just off the top of my head. I know that there is big push coming from the UK recording industry - they're supposed to open an office in NY to help promote British music. Maybe that's why someone fed this bull5h1t story to CNN. Just a couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with a friend in London who is a music publisher and she was talking about how one segment of industry types was moaning that U.K. rock bands weren't breaking in the U.S. and the opposing segment was moaning that the labels aren't spending money to develop real talent with real songs. And instead of putting their money and muscle behind artists that are not rock bands but are garnering interest (like Zero 7, 4hero) they are chasing "dreary rock bands with dreary songs." Her words, not mine. Go figure. I wonder when we're going to see some mashups on the chart...The Nirvana v Destiny's Child one was priceless. n.p.: Randy Newman - one of those movie songs on Sessions @ W.54th - -------------------------------------------- "Radio has no future" - Lord Kelvin, 1897 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 12:09:13 +0800 (PHT) From: Subject: Re: aggressive encusackment NJC > I would however make an exception for Joan Cusack. I can't forget her scene-stealing turns in BROADCAST NEWS, her facial expressions in WORKING GIRL, her deranged chronicle of her life story via a slide projector in ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES, her "fuck Barbra Streisand" venom in IN & OUT and ... practically every movie she's in. Hi all, I haven't been posting lately, and I've missed chatting with you all, and reading digests. i just got my browser and other corrupted stuff more or less fixed, after four months, and I'm feeling better (see below). My deep loving thanks for all the support you've all shown me in the last few months. I'm lucky to have you all as cyber-friends, and can't wait to meet many of you in a few weeks. I just wrote Anne Sandstrom a note, and decided to post a slightly abbreviated version of here since so many of you have asked me to keep you posted. Anne, hope you don't mind my sharing this with everybody. hugs to you all, Walt Anne: << It's good to see you posting to the list. How are you doing?>> Me: So far, I've only posted to the Fest-list, but yeah. i was in a silly mood this morning, and made a few cracks. :-). <> I'm doing okay, good moments and bad. Brain isn't too damaged, and I've stopped the most likely culprit. I do indeed know about T-20, a fusion inhibitor, whole new category of antiretroviral. I tried a coupla times to get in a study starting two years ago, but then I stumbled on the regimen I'm still on, which worked really well -- until just the last few months, when I started slipping. The irony is -- and I'm sure you know about this kind of thing -- you have to be sick *enough* (numerically) to get on yet another study, and I'm not yet -- my numbers are still too "good" -- but at least T-20 has gotten easier to administer. Now it's an interdermal injection, self-administered, rather than an intravenous, which you'd need to go to someone to give to you *daily*, as it was two years ago. Maybe by the time I'm ready to switch regimens, T-20 will come in the form of a pat on the knee. ;-) <> Yeah, I'm sorry I've been out of touch so much. Things are *so* sucky here, financially, legally -- Robert's evil, stupid family (a gynocracy, excuse the expression, of sisters and nieces) letting him take care of his mom without any help from them for five years as she slowly lost her mind , *then* stepping in and insisting on being in total control -- against his mother's wishes, yadayadayada. She (Mom, Carmel) is a lovely woman with whom i have much in common -- we're both bibliophiles, and we used to talk for hours about various things we were reading, as Robert mowed the lawn or bought groceries. Carmel used to help Robert financially, and as everything has gotten more and more expensive, this has gone from being extra cash/fun money to being absolutely necessary for things like rent and food; and now that his sisters have come and ambushed R and his mom legally, that source of funds is completely unavailable. *My* mom tries to help, but she's 80 and not rich. We were assigned a pro-bono lawyer, but he turned out to be a lemon, missing two appointments with us, and more crucially, a filing deadline(!!!). So he basically made our situation worse. Sigh. In the end, we'll almost certainly have to leave the City (SanFran). I faced this last fall as utility prices shot up exponentially (thanks, Enron and all the other insanely avariscvious energy companies); Robert, who's lived here since birth, has found it harder to accept. But we're looking at a friend's house tomorrow in beautiful Yuba City (North of Scaramento, considered the armpit of California) for possible rental. Three bedrooms, with all the amenities and a backyard, for $700/mo!!! We're paying $1200 for a teensy one-bedroom now. The bad news: With any luck it'll only be 105 in the shade there... Give me fog anytime. ;-) Anyhoo, that's a brief (for me) synopsis of why I disappeared from the J-list, temporarily. Overwhelmed. Oh, also we got a piano!!! [Robert's mother's. As with her car, R's sisters had no objection to her giving these things to Robert *until* she became incompetent, so they could contest her giving him anything after the fact. Arrrgggh! Sorry, but the pointlessness of it gets to me sometimes...] I've been working on piano arrangments of various Joni (Gift of the Magi is real tough!) and Burt (Bacharach) songs for the last two months. Yehaa!!! Oh, and I've got the beginnings of a possible lyric! First one I've attempted since i was 14. It's silly, but it *might* work. Tentative title: Couch Potatuh (rhymes with procrastinatuh). I'm so looking forward to the Fest, to meeting you and everyone in person! And to the songwriting workshop - -- speaking of which, what exactly is the workshop about -- working on lyrics, melody or both? Anne, how's your pain, your energy levels? *My* biggest problem now is fatigue, and i hope i can work out a schedule with naps so i can do *everything possible* at the fest; in any case, there's much will here, so there'll be a way. :-) Love to Ann (and to all), and counting the minutes to the Fest, Walt ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #286 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
