Lamadoo ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jul 2002 08:34:39 +0000 From: "Mike Pritchard" Subject: Re: blank (long) NJC I think it's becoming clear to everyone that having a job, any job, never mind a good job, is becoming a privilege and not a right. In all countries, in the private and public sectors, everywhere it's tougher to keep your job and much easier to lose it, or better to say it's easier for your employers to get rid of you, however experienced, wise, efficient, or productive you are. I have been teaching English here in Barcelona for 11 years now and have worked for more than a dozen schools. All of them have ripped me off, fired me, lied to me, underpaid me, or all of the above. Without exception, including the public university. In response I have become freelance and have had the most productive and interesting 18 months since I made my decision in January 2001. Now I decide who I teach, what price to charge, what timetable is acceptable to me, who I will not allow to make racist remarks, what tax rate I will apply to my earnings, and all the other paraphernalia of being self-employed. I decided to get rid of all my part-time contracts (at one time I was working for 5 schools with resulting confusion and chaos) and concentrate on finding my own clients, keeping only one contract with a 'respectable' very Catalan, very Catholic school 'just in case' my own clients dried up. I also do freelance proofreading and correction for the government website and also improve the English of academic papers written by non-native speakers at the universities. There are drawbacks, of course. Waiting to be paid, especially. I have worked for the local government since March and will be paid for my work in December, when my contract finishes. How I am expected to survive until then is not the government's problem or concern. They pay a better rate per hour but, boy, do they make you wait. Every year they offer me more classes and every time I take it on and consequently have to limit my availability for other classes, classes which pay at the end of the month. I was debating whether to go 'full-time' freelance and really to take the big plunge but this decision has been taken out of my hands. I have been fired by the Jesuits because the law states that after three one-year contracts they have to, by law, make me a member of the staff. They have decided to end my contract and not to offer me anything in the future because they want a 'leaner', easier to fire squad and a smaller number of people with tenure. So off I go again to the lawyer and maybe sometime down the road I will win the court case and receive the compensation I am entitled to. This is standard procedure here and I have been through this before. The only boss who has never shat on me is me, and so my decision is clear. Do not depend on anyone except yourself, because nobody cares about you. I am not bitter about this; I am used to it, but I am in a better position than lots of people who have been made expendable by the government's decision to help businesses to fire their staff more easily, putting thousands of people of my age out of work and with little hope for anything in the future. To get unemployment benefit here you are required to accept any job at all up to 30 kilometres from your home. Refusal means no money. I know an English teacher who was sent to a factory to work a night shift where there was no public transport to allow them to get there. Saying no means not getting the money. Macjobs are all there is for these people and the young people leaving school. The government propaganda machine never stops churning out 'Espaqa va bien'. Yeah, right. If your initial post drew Bob Mueller out of his socio-political cocoon, it must have been controversial enough to strike a nerve in many of us. 2. I say thank you to Bob M and Kakki for their ever thoughtful, well balanced responses. It takes a lot of the pressure off of the rest of us ;-) 3. As for 'statistics' on 'social mobility', I strongly urge that we not throw out statistics. The adage "lies, damn lies and statistics" is a sound one in the the real world - as an actuary, I wince daily at the barrage of statistics cited in the press and other media THAT ARE ALMOST NEVER SIGNIFICANT IN THE CONTEXT THEY PURPORT TO SHED LIGHT ON. It is very difficult to conduct studies that produce statistically sound conclusions (e.g., whether taking birth control pills are good or bad for one thing or the other that might later ail you). It is harder still to cull a statistically significant statistic out of a bunch of superficially significant numbers. That said, I would ask you to contemplate this facet of 'social mobility' that may reflect to some degree on the way the rest of the world views the US : immigration/emigration. I refer specifically to the number of Americans abandoning their country to live in other countries, and vice versa ( not to mention the demand curve, which is even stronger). 4. In the area of statistics, the answer "it's the bell curve, stupid" is often correct. (The word stupid is part of that phrase and is definitely not aimed at anyone on this list). Not everyone in the US lives the American Dream. But a good percentage of people do live well - especially, I believe, those who work hard, embrace their 'dream' and get on with their lives. 5. It often takes two or three generations for the economic part of the American Dream to bear fruit. For example, all 4 of my grandparents were immigrants. They suffered throughout the deprsession, and their 8 children did not go to college. They did all work hard, though - not as entrepeneurs, which is only one way to go in America - but in corporate and civil service jobs - and their children all did go to college - mostly state schools. And 12 out their 13 grandchildren are doing well (it's the bell curve, stupid ;-0 ), and their kids realize that education has value in more than one area of life - intrinsic as well as economic. Some of them have gone and/or will go to Ivy league schools, professional schools, etc - and before you know it, you're talking about the Bushes and the Kennedies and the Gores and - to complete the bell curve - the Cuomos ;-) - sorry - that's a New York joke. Looking around me, I believe that education is of obvious economic advantage, on balance (I have some training in statistics, but my opinion is based primarily on anecdotal evidence - it is not necessarily because I trust the reported statistical analyses presented in the press that might appear to confirm this point). 6. Americans - more so than many other countries that are less heterogeneous - work together to try to make things better and cure our many ills. We do not always succeed, and there are many who do not even try - some who sabotage - , but by and large, we try. And so progress is gradually made in most cases, even though we all disagree with the solutions in some cases. Perhaps we need to do more to be our brothers' keepers economically as well as militarily - but our economy is not a bottomless pit. 7. I know we are 'ugly' in terms of being culturally and linguistically 'egocentric', and have a tendency to beat our breasts too much. I claim rights once a year (usually around the 4th of July). I think it's interesting, if ironic. Here I go again with one of my simple opinions, but speaking from experience, the way I was raised, and personal conviction, I've always believed that college/university is overrated. When I graduated from high school, a good friend of mine was dumped by her boyfriend after an argument during which he proclaimed that going to college was to continue with his worldly education, and she replied that going to college was simply avoiding entering the real world for another 4 years (or longer). I think each side of the argument has merit, although I lean toward "get out there and go to work." There's a shift in the workforce these days ... folks are returning to the trades again, and I think that's good. There has long been a vacancy of talented tradespeople, and most of us bitch about it (when shoddy work is performed), but not too many parents have encouraged their kids to follow that path. This has left us with way too many "educated" people who have ended up working in jobs they could have gotten right out of high school. Of course now they have all that financial aid to repay, plus they missed out on four years of earnings while they were attending university. (No wonder people are filing for bankruptcy in record numbers.) I think my brother and sister-in-law had the right idea ... my brother is a sheet metal worker (this required apprentice training during the day and classes in the evenings, for 4 years), and my sister-in-law is an MRI technician (having been promoted from x-ray). Neither has a university degree, but between the two of them they're making around $95,000 a year, which may not sound like a lot, but it goes a long way in Northeastern Ohio. (Several of my cousins think my brother and his wife are filthy rich.) Both are 32 years old and love their jobs, and they have many years of promotions and pay raises ahead. As for me, for the last two years of high school (1975-76), I studied "secretarial" applications for 4 hours every day. Then I enlisted in the Air Force and went to "tech" school for 6 months and then repaired radar systems for the next 10+ years. I got out in 1987 and moved to Texas. Around 1989, I got a temp job that acquainted me with PCs. I soon turned the temp job into a full-time position, and with the assistance of phone conversations with "Bill" -- who lived in NY and who I never met in person (he was contracted to my employer) -- I learned and taught myself DOS. When Windows came along ... well, how difficult is that, really? (For the record though, I still dislike the mouse. The keyboard RULES!) Anyway, between the knowledge gained in high school and since, I'm now extremely well compensated (in both pay and benefits) for the admin/database work I do. Although I've taken many stabs at attending college/university, I don't have a degree, and I don't think I need one. Because of what I know regarding admin, computers, etc., (which I belittle at times, since there are many who know much more, at least about computers), my boss and coworkers think I'm the most amazing thing since sliced bread. I LOVE MY JOB, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm pleased to make the money I do, but it's really not about that ... it's about loving what you do. When it came out in '73 I was in grade school still, and all the kids adored it. I found it grating and offensive to the ears. If anyone does actually appreciate this song please explain the attraction!!!! yes.... I like it. I think the song is okay.. .. is it this one?. . . ."we had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. ...." yeah. . ..it's an okay song. I flip through so many radio stations while I am in my car within the course of a few minutes. . .I find myself recycling old songs from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's ("in search of truth and beauty...") so many of these older songs top so much of the songs I find on the radio nowadays. hey. . .if anybody responds to my post can you also respond to me privately (I don't get NJC, thanks) Marianne I actually have found m _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jul 2002 20:44:28 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Joni and other artists 2000: "Joni Mitchell" - Jam! It was really great. Now. . . . is there anyone out there (Bob? anyone?) who has a compilation of all of her shared work? I would love to hear every bit of it. Has anyone out there been so diligent? Thanks. Very unassuming man-not full of that 'star' bull. Anyway, they had a Canadian product on called a Turd Twister. this is quite unbelievable. It consists of a shallow tube that you stick up your bum. Then there are various different plates you stick in the centre of it. These shapes are like those pastry cutting things one uses to cut pastry in different fancy shapes. You do this just before you have a poo. The winters in Canada are obviously way too long. Mitchell, a Saskatchewan native who wrote and performed songs such as ``Big Yellow Taxi,'' ``The Circle Game'' and ``Both Sides Now,'' was made a companion of the order, the highest designation. Also appointed companions were former Supreme Court Justice Peter Cory, Toronto social activist and feminist author Doris Anderson and Roger Blais, a renowned engineer, scientist, teacher and entrepreneur from Montreal. Cockburn, known as much for his outspoken social activism as his folksy music, was promoted to an officer of the order after previously being made a member. Lorne Michaels, founder of TV comedies Saturday Night Live and a nine-time Emmy Award winner, was appointed a member of the order. The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize Canadians for outstanding lifetime achievement and service.
