They're both Joni songs that appear on "Covers, Volume 31"! :~) Yep, I'm a day late & a dollar short like they say down south, but it's NEVER to late to bask in the warm glow that can only come from a collection of Joni covers, and July finds us with yet another gallery of glorious gems from around this great world of ours. Thanks to my "pally" Jody Johnson for her help in contributing to this edition! Love ya, gal! And of all the volumes I've assembled, this is surely one of them! Here's the rundown: 1. Kentucky Express - Big Yellow Taxi: Don't know if these guys ever played Hee Haw, but they could have...I wouldn't have noticed anyway with all those half-clad gals running around! 2. Jeanne Newhall - The Hissing of Summer Lawns: The only other vocal recording of this one that I know of. And an excellent one it is too. Nice, full arrangement with great playing & singing. 3. Dana Winner - Dat ben jij: I guess that means Both Sides Now, in any regard that's what song she sings. While I'm nutty for foreign language versions, this one proves that not all the cheese that comes from Holland is tasty! 4. Dana Winner - Both Sides Now: Basically the same music track, but Dana gives it a go in English this time 'round. 5. Cheryl Fisher - Moon At The Window: I LOVE the fact that Cheryl Fisher chose this song as a jazz cover, I just wish she was a better singer. Not that she's bad...there's just something missing here. Anyway, she's a big Joni fan as I found out from her, and her band is perfectly wonderful. 6. Cheryl Fisher - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Ditto for this one, but she gets some extra points for difficulty - not an easy melody to croon in case you haven't tried. 7. Elmerhassel - Big Yellow Taxi: I can GUARANTEE that these guys were never on Hee Haw! Nice and punk-rocky, I love the energy on this Taxi take. 8. Gerd Schinkel - Parkuhrn (Big Yellow Taxi/German) 9. Gerd Schinkel - Beide Seiten (Both Sides Now/German) 10. Gerd Schinkel - Das Kreiselspiel (The Circle Game/German): Gerd's also a big Joni fan, as witnessed by the fact that he included THREE Joni covers on his private issue CD "Treibgut Im Wind" (Dust In The Wind). He's quite a guitarist, his vocals are right on the money, and Mr. van Tiel (who is MUCH more worldly than I) tells me his translations are very good as well. 11. Courtney Lawsing - The Urge For Going: Another lovely take on one of Joni's earliest songs...Don't know anything about Courtney, but that doesn't stop me one bit from enjoying her lovely voice. 12. Ann Sally - Both Sides Now 13. Ann Sally - All I Want Ann is an Asian jazz singer, her voice is really nice in a slightly flawed way, if that makes sense. You can tell she is passionate about the material. The band behind her on both these tracks is just outstanding (But really & truly, Asian singers should never attempt the word "unravelling") :~) 14. Tanya Chua - I Don't Know Where I Stand: Like Bree said, the thing that jumps out at you immediately is how much the bassist sounds like Jaco. Imagine Jaco & Joni on those Clouds songs - oh, my! Tanya, a pop singer from Singapore, does a more than capable job - one of my personal faves on this disc. 15. Something Extra - Woodstock: Something Extra is the girls' acapella choral group from Yale University...this one stopped me dead in my tracks. The arrangement and execution of it is a treasure. And we haven't heard the last of these ladies... 16. Tori Amos - River Live; (Indianapolis, IN 2001) A tip of the old covers hat to Stephanie Morrison for putting me on the trail of this one! An audience recording from her "Strange Little Girls" tour, the quality is good and of course Tori gives it her all. 17. Pat Kelly - Both Sides Now: Pat is a South African pop singer, with a couple of records out. His version of the ol' warhorse isn't the best, but certainly not the worst, and bounces right along in a fun way. 18. Mark Murphy - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Mark has previously graced our collection with his great take on "Barangrill". He's got a nice rich, smooth voice that lends itself well to Joni's lyrics and to this melody. 19. Irene Sheer - Big Yellow Taxi: Another one that I don't know much about, other than the fact that her song is a "Sheer" delight! ;~) So there you have it...19 songs, 19 hits! From Singapore to Kentucky, folks all over the world just love that Joni! :~) Bob NP: Jonatha Brooke, "Paris" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 20:21:03 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: under [blank] NJC <> Catherine, are you insinutating that I'm NOT passionate about expediting engineered process equipment for an Eli Lilly Humalog manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico? Trash it all you want. Baby I'm a want you - dumb. dumb, dumb song Cherish - I am with Bob, that was a good song, starts with a definition of the word and expresses some very human relationship situations (I don't know how many times I wish that I had told you...). And while Bob may have slow danced to Cherish, I was the one who knew how to fast dance and got to dance with everyone's girlfriends since they were too chicken to fast dance. Rest assured I am teaching my grandson Gage some of my better moves, and he has a few of his own, he will be quite a mover on the dance floor when the timte comes. Andy is still around. I did a gig with here in NZ earlier this year......in fact he's on the comeback trail: www.andykimmusic.com I believe is the website. The man is a showbiz genius! Rock Me Gently, Sugar, Sugar, Baby How'd We Ever Get This Way......great songs by a very clever dude. For a while he was called "Baron Longfellow" -believe it or not. Loathe him and the song. Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch" Darn, that one was dreadful and how many times did they play it? Nine million. And how about Debby Boone and it -- "You Light Up My Life". My goodness, it was on every five minutes. , Bread's "Diary" Kind of like the song. Reminds me of a very good time. I like the group fairly well but the main attraction is David Gates and that voice. Later on in his career he had "where does the loving go". I adore that tune. , England Dan > & John Ford Coley's "I'd Really Like to See You Tonight" One of all time favorites. Summer, youth, friends, love, excitement, the future. Simple? Maybe, but its simplicity is what made it so great. , Morris Albert's > "Feeling", David Geddes' "Run Joey, Run", and even "Babe" by Styx. Three major stinkers but have a friend that loves Styx. Guess it just goes to show, once again, apples and oranges. (okay, I do have Bread's > Greatest Hits) Have it to and I like it. He's lost his job and is working about 3 hours a week. Being the warmhearted, loving man that he is, he still managed to sound great. On Friday, he just got turned down for a Visa for his trip to the U.S. Being a single unemployed male is next to impossible to leave the country. So, unfortunately he won't be attending Jonifest this year. He also said that the cost to use the internet is outrageous, so we won't be hearing from him for quite awhile. He wanted me to tell everyone how much he misses his Joni family, and he loves you all. He will try to post a message sometime in the future. He *does* have a new significant other that is living with him, and he's very happy about that. It's amazing how someone who's country is going through so much could still bring a warm smile to my face. (NJC) Hello All- I am So high right now that I just have to share tonight with all of you. Mikey's baseball team (The Destrehan Gators) was the number one seed in the league going into the playoffs last week (with only one loss). They one all of the playoff games and played the championship game tonight. A few games ago Jack happened by the ball park while we were playing in a stretch limo to give Mikey and Julian a ride home. The team were in awe of their pals of course so I told them that IF they won the championship game that I would spring for a limo ride to go eat pizza. The game tonight was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. They batted first and scored 3 runs first, but then the other team (who were really really good) tied. Then we went ahead again and then they got a grand slam and went ahead. It was back and forth for 5 innings. Mikey made some incredible defensive plays at third base and then w3as asked to go to catcher where he made more amazing heads up plays. In the top of the 6th inning they were down by one and two outs. The batter was a player on our team who has struggled terribly at bat all season and has struck out umteen times. I am sure many of the players and parents thought we had had it, but I know a lot of us optimists were still praying and sending positive thoughts and with a full count he swung and got a base hit with 2 RBI's giving us the go ahead run. BUT the other team still had another at bat. We walked two and then they got a hit. We got two outs and then one of their best batters was up (with the Grand Slam guy right behind him). Once again we were forced into a full count situation with everyone biting their nails. Our man on the mound was a very inexperienced pitcher as was the starter of the game. Our two main pitchers could not pitch because of league rules that limits them and forces teams to use more pitchers, but both these guys did and outstanding job against all odds. Our boy threw the third strike and the game was over. Every player on that team contributed to this season one way or the other. I am so honored by that fact and so very proud of each and every kid on the team and the coaches. Jack pulled up after the game in a stretch NaviGATOR (with Gator signs on the sides) and whisked them off to Cici's Pizza for an after game party. Those kids had the time of their lives and boy do they deserve it. Just had to share my joys with all of you and let you know that I miss you all and have not participated with you cause of my bizzare schedule with the likes of (just in the last two weeks): Merle Haggard, Andy Griggs, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and The Gang, Pointer Sisters, Thelma Houston, Dennis Quaid, David Allen Coe, 12 Stones (great band watch for the videos at House of Blues), Norman Brown, Impromt2, Rashanna Patterson, blah blah blah. Anyways, the vacation is the light at the end of tunnel. Also looking forward to Jonifest and seeing many of you there. Jack said tonight he is really coming. My best to you all.
