[Michael Paz Subject: JMDL artists available at CD Baby, njc Now that I'm back on my feet financially, I'm able to buy music again. Tonight I ordered two JMDL-related discs from CD Baby. First was the long overdue acquisition of Jeff Bisch's "40 watt stars". You guys will be surprised to hear that our own Bryan Thomas (who hasn't checked in for too long) released "ones and zeros" in 2002. I picked that up too. Amazingly, you can buy quantity one of Bryan's new title for $10 or quantity of two for $12. Buy one for $10 and get the second one for $2. I went for it. I guess my radio dj friend will get the second one. Hey, I'm helping Bryan "push digits". Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll try Rebecca Jensen's "Byupe" (2002). She thinks enough of us JMDLers to count herself among our artists. Rebecca, are you lurking? If you go over to www.cdbaby.com you may also want to consider these discs which are already in my collection and are recommended: Kate Bennett's "Over the Moon" Victor Johnson's "Tangled" Bryan Thomas'es "Radio Plastic Jennifer" and Clark Carlton's "Salt Water" BTW, "Beautiful Morning" is from some other Victor Johnson, not ours. You won't find CDs by Gregg Cagno (USA, New Jersey?), Fred Simon (USA, Chicago), David Lahm (USA, New York City), Big Yellow Taxi (Denmark), Beth Patterson (USA, New Orleans), Maurizio Falcone (Italia), Karen Goldberg (USA, Baltimore), Alexandra Fortier, Louis Lynch, Don Rowe, or Shadows and Light. I am not used to that as a matter of fact. Even when my lovely mother died in year 2000 I could not find any tears in my eyes probably because she died at her (so-called) prime age. But after watching the November 11, 2001 terror attack at the World Trade Centre on the CNN documentary, I felt that was the highest level of man's inhumanity to man. The attack was unimaginable. It was like watching the firm called "TITANIC". I really really sympathize with the people of America. I'm sure they never baigained for such a heinous attack. Coal concert - sjc I had the good fortune to be able to attend Raya O. Coal's CD presentation concert at Unplugged in Vienna's 9th District Wednesday night. Formerly known as Ramona Kasheer, Raya O. Coal (vocals, guitars, accordion) appeared with her new band - Robin Gillard on drums, Juergen Mitterlehner on saxophones, Toni Burger on violin and mandolin, and Reinhard Ziegerhofer on bass - with guest appearances from Thomas Uhegbu on keyboard and Michael Steindl on flute. The concert was wonderful. Raya is very captivating - her beautiful melodies, unusual chord changes, and surprising rhythms are an outward expression of her deep warmth and humor. It is so hard to describe her music because it is such a wild mixture of influences not only from one song to another, but also sometimes even within one song. In one moment it is a folk ballad and in the next it is jazz, in another moment you could imagine you are being serenaded by a gypsy songbird, and the next moment you are in an African chanting session. I feel like somehow she is expanding the boundaries of musical possibility. During the concert, one of her songs sequed into Big Yellow Taxi, and for the encore, she sang Twisted with Reinhard on bass, and instead of singing "instead of one head... I've got two" she sang "instead of two names... I've got two... " which made everyone laugh. I've been listening to her CD, Cut All The Strings, for the last two days. I love all the music on it - like Joni's songs, these are songs that I can play again and again and not tire of them, songs I want to sing along with, songs that run through my head without the help of the CD player. Raya wanted to include a version of Woodstock on her CD, but there were some hangups with getting permission. Hopefully it will appear on a later CD. I highly recommend her music to all JMDL members. She really is a very talented artist who could use your support. I am sure you will be extremely glad if you take my advice and go to the trouble to order her CD. He's the Market Manager at WMSP-AM, WNZZ-AM, WLWI-AM & FM, WHHY-FM, WMXS-FM, & WXFX-FM. Yeah he's an industry 'wheel' but he *don't know jack* about Joni. R&R asked Mr. Barker: "How did the events of September 11 affect you?" He replied: "It reminds me of a song, 'You Don't Know What You've Got (Until You Lose It).' Sept 11 made it clear that, while we are an all-powerful nation, the parts that make up the whole are very fragile. But the fragile nature makes us protective, and that's what makes us strong. Like a splash of cold water in the face, Sept 11 was a wakeup call. Also, it reminded me of what an important role our medium plays. Radio rallied to the occasion on September 11, and it continues to do so today." In fairness to Bernie, it looks like the R&R writer and / or editor interpreted Bernie's mangled quote as if it was a title but we all know it's not a title. It's possible that Bernie gave them the first bit and the editor incorrectly added the sub-title, making him look silly. At this time, the group was recording their first album, which included a cover of Bruce Cockburn's song "Bird Without Wings". In July of 1968 the band went through some personnel changes and asked Bruce to join the group. "3's a Crowd", with Bruce, went on the road as the opening act for The Turtles and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, as well as a one-off engagement supporting Grand Funk Railroad. The group broke up in April of 1969. The group's history is quite a fascinating story about the early Toronto days with Neil Young, Steve Stills, and Joni references sprinkled here and there. It can be read in great detail starting here: http://www.jmdl.com/today/ttextsearchresults.cfm?searchstring=pryor Once there, click on the picture of Joni (or the links) for all the info. I had no idea Bruce Cockburn went that far back. I do remember seeing Richard Pryor a couple times on the Ed Sullivan show, obviously back when his act could appear on prime time. Are you suggesting some kind of a first strike policy? Do you think that will end the violence against/hatred of America? Why do you think the WTC attack happened? Do you buy Bush's line that it is because they loathe freedom? Bin Laden has said he would be happy to call an end to the targetting of the US if we get our military presence out of the Arab countries and stop supporting Israel's occupation of Palistine. Do you think our foreign policy is due for re-assessment? Should we continue to occupy foreign lands to protect business and oil interests? What a great game six degrees is because of all the behind the scenes information that is shared, thanks to Bob also. I am a huge Bruce Cockburn fan and am thrilled to see that he is so well known south of the border. :-)) I saw him in the early days, in concert here in Hamilton (Hamilton Place)..can't remember the year. It was incredible. He was so young! For some reason, I remember this ... he wore a plaid shirt, jeans, boots, and most of all, I remember that he was so humble. He seemed really touched that he was so well received. He is an incredible guitar player, writer, singer, activist. He did an awesome show, just Bruce and his guitar. He had those brass chimes hanging from his wrist and the sound was magical..just a hint of bells as he moved his arm. Hamilton Place is a fairly large venue, however, it felt like we were in a small club because Bruce was so warm and open all through the night. Bruce sure gets around. He has performed with Jonatha Brooke on her CD Plumb (thanks for the reminder bro). Bruce was in concert in Toronto recently at Con Hall and I am still kicking myself because I waited too long to get tickets, and sure enough, they were sold out once I got around to it. Perhaps he will be in the Philly area sometime soon. And speaking of guitar playing .. Les, have you heard the CD called Six Strings North of the Border (a collection of Canadian guitarists) ? It is fabulous and I think of you everytime I hear it. Mags. np: arrows of light, Bruce Cockburn Circles in the Stream live CD, concert in Massey Hall, Toronto, April 1977, no way you can sit still listening to this one !! he's right up there with Joni imho :-) I recommend this CD highly / never grow tired of it...ever. ===== You open my heart, you do.
