On page 216, there is a two page colour photograph of Joni Mitchell (taken by Leibovitz). Our Joan is beautiful, back to the garden beautiful, stunning, beyond words beautiful and this picture captures that. I have had the privilege of seeing Joan in person twice. Once at the Maple Leaf Gardens on the 98 tour, and last October in Toronto at the Hommage for Joni. She beautiful on the inside and out. Both Joni's voice and her piano chops are in fine form. *shiver* A night of many surprises for both Joni and her audience. Sometimes it was hard to understand but I did my best. As I see it, the borderline that Joni sees running down the table is a scratch, something that damaged the table, and the table symbolises something that most people are sharing together while sitting around it, and the borderline is something that can't be fixed, like a scratch. Now, new research finally unravels the mystery. Inside sources, who will remain forever undisclosed, have revealed Joni's dental records, which tell a sordid tale of the sufferings of the artist. From root canals to plastic crowns, from plaque to vampire teeth, her mouth was a disaster area (like her recordings of the period). The same sources report that Joni's husband held her hand throughout the infernal dental sessions, and therefore the 80's were also his dental nightmare, as well as ours. Just Kidding, Nuri. _____________________________________________________________ Free email, web pages, news, entertainment, weather and MORE! I think I was at the same concert, of which I have written before. When an itinerary showed up on the list that mentioned another Duke U. concert in 1976, I became uncertain of which one I attended, but further reflection makes me close to sure it was 1974. I didn't have any comparable experience, just enjoyed the concert from fairly far up in the Indoor (now Cameron Indoor) Stadium. I lived in Raleigh at the time, following attending Duke 1966-1970 for an AB and N.C. State U. at Raleigh 1971-1973 for an MPA. Where were you that was a 45-minute drive to Durham? Sounds like farther away than Raleigh or Chapel Hill, closer than, e.g., Fayetteville or Greensboro. I was just now looking at the Fleischer book. Norman Seeff seems to have a way of bringing out a sultriness in Joni. There are several of his photos in this book and Joni looks HOT in most of them. Joni is a unique looking person. She's one of those people who can look completely different from one photo to the next (Billie Holiday was like this as well.) Joni has one of the most exquisite set of cheek bones known to man, marvelous deep-set eyes and a very sensual mouth. She is endlessly fascinating just to look at, as if she herself is a work of fine art. The blank unholy surprise of it all (stealing a line from 'The Philadelphia Story') is that the inside is even more fascinating and remarkable. She has given us glimpses of that inner self over the years and the collage those glimpses make up has made us all hungry for more. In a way she is like a very intricate puzzle and I suppose it's only natural that those of us who love her art want to try and put that puzzle together and get the full picture of the 'real Joni.' But this puzzle has some pieces mixed in that may or may not belong. What is truth and what is creative invention? Only Joni knows for sure. In the meantime, we do have the face and, as I and others have already said, the face is fascinating in and of itself. I saw the full size print of the Liebowitz picture when the exhibit was in Seattle. Unbeknownst to me, Travis was watching me when I found it. He said my mouth dropped open and I got this great big smile on my face. It is truly a stunning picture and emanates the most wonderful aura of Joni's soul. Here goes: A work colleague who knows how much I love Joni and Bruce gave me a CD with Bruce Cockburn covers, which I played as soon as I got home. While listening to the song, All The Diamonds in the World, my hair stood on end...and I KNEW I had heard that voice before, an outstanding female voice which as far as i am concerned, nailed Bruce's emotions dead on. I couldnt put my finger on it, so I picked up the cover and had one of those OMG moments. It was Rebecca Jenkins!!! Just ask Jimmy and Coyote Rick about her voice. And what, you may be asking, is the connection to Joni? Well, Rebecca was one of the performing artists who paid tribute to the magnificent Joni Mitchell in Toronto last October at the Hommage. Rebecca did one of the most amazing, soulful versions of Two Grey Rooms that I have ever heard. As far as I know, Rebecca doesnt have a CD of her own work, really too bad. Bob, her Two Grey Rooms would stand up against any on your cover project, in my humble opinion as the best. Rebecca sings from deep within her soul. Mags, staring at boxes ;-P np: Lovers in a Dangerous Time, another Bruce Cockburn tune performed by the Bare Naked Ladies and again, imho, I like this version a lot!
