All the best PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 12:54:31 +0100 From: "Garret" Subject: The Homecoming NJC Off i went into town yesterday to buy some blank cd's and meet my friend after work; every intention of being home early enough to watch the latest awful episode of Ally McBeal....what happened to this show guys?? It used to be genuinely witty, an intelligent comedy. Now the characters have become unlikeable not only unbeleiveable. This is neither here nor there. When i met my friend she told me that the Irish Soccer team were making their triumphant return, and that a huge welcome home party was being held in the Phoenix Park; that the team would greet the President in Aras an Uachtaran and then be carried across the park by helicopter to the party. Some great bands announced that they would play at the party. Mundy and The Revs for example. So, we went for the double barrelled reason of placing our nationalism in sport and getting to hear some free music. I don't know what it's like in other countries, but this countryn came to a standstill during our World Cup matches. We got to the final sixteen and were knocked out then by Spain in a very tense match! We got to the final sixteen, but you'd swear we'd won by the reaction in this country. Every time we scored it was as if we had won the competition hands down. The craic was great We should have realised just how many people would want to get a glimpse of the team. By the time that we got to the park there were already about 80,000 people. It was being held in the severe far end of the park, we didnt realise how far we'd have to walk. As we got closer we could hear the music. We could hear Aslan. THEN.....we could hear Mundy (him from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack "To You I Bestow", just released his second album), so we ran. We didn't realise there were hills and dirt trakcs Ok, we missed Mundy's short set completely, i mean, we could hear it, just couldn't see anything. They showed some of our highlights on the big screens then; man, it was crazy!!! Some comedians and the eircom mouse intrduced none other than westlife! They only performed one song (awww), "World Or Our Own", since they were headlining their own gig elsewhere. This led into Picturehouse who were great. They have a great song called SunBurst. They did a good little set, closing with their new single. Towards the end of this song, they changed the lyrics into something like "everyone loves the boys in green" and got the audience to sing- what a crafty way to get 100,000 (and growing) to latch onto your new single! More comedians, and the team arrived in their blaze of jetlagged glory following video clips of them greeting the president and the taoiseach in the Aras. As you can imagine the crowd went wild. A great reception for our national heroes! By this point there was, of course, a live television feed. Many of the players and coaches got to give a few words; it was one players birthday, hehe! This was quite brief since the guys were knackered and i'm sure their families had celebrations going down too. The team went off, and the comedians came back on and people started trailing away. We were about to leave ourselves when one of them announced " we leave you now in the capable hands of The Revs". OH MY GOD!!! I love this band (i know, it's another irish band that probably nobody outside of this country has heard). The thing is, though, that i always seem to miss their live performances. They played during my exams; they played when i was working; and i always seem to miss the advertisements. They started with their brillinat cover of Turning Japanese. The crowds were still beginning to disipate, but as the song went on the crowd got very caught up in it (you can imagine me and my friends going just a bit crazy at this point). They threw in the ubiquitous "Boys in green" verse too, mind you. From this they went into Wired to The Moon; a kick ass fun song:) "i met my love in a looney bin, she's wired to the f**king moon" being the repeated line. There was an american woman in front of us that kept giving us disgusted looks when we sang that line (hey, we were just singing, we didn't write the song), but she got thought it was funny when the second verse opens with "she told me she was Monica Lewinskys twin, she's wired to the f**king moon". All in all i thought it was a great welcome reception for the team that have done us proud for such a small nation. It was a great way to end a world cup campaign that started with the Roy Keane "scandal". Heschl's Gyrus, referred to in that article, is an area of the brain that is believed to be the location of the primary auditory cortex, and is very close in position to important language areas (known popularly as Wernicke's area, but more correctly as the Planum temporale *i love these words*:) Research has produced evidence that in most of us this planum temporale is larger in the left hemisphere of the brain than in the right (the left hemisphere generally being the more dominant- not entirely mind you- for language functions). Musicians with perfect pitch (pitch technically being a function of a sound wave's frequency, or number of vibrations per second expressed in Hertz; perfect pitch being the ability to identify the pitch of individual musical notes) were found to have a much bigger planum temporale than those without perfect pitch and nonmusicians. One of the interesting questions raised by that article, Kakki, is within the realm of the usual "nature/nurture" debate. Is this area of the brain enlarged as a result of being exposed to music so frequently and exercising and improving musical abilities or is the musical ability a result of the enlarged brain area? Genetics versus environment/experience. I usually tend to fall somewhere down the middle in arguements of the kind, beleiveing that usually there is some interaction between the two. It has been shown that musical training can enlarge areas of the auditory cortex that seems to respond to piano tones. One study indicated that 25% more cortex is activated in musicians than in non musicians! It has also been found, if you trust the facts and figures, that the cortical area devoted to the fingers of the left hand is enlarged in skilled string players! Ofd course, every study for has a corresponding study against or at least raising importnat questions and highlighting many doubts. I find the following fact from that article very impressive, repeat **very** impressive: "The professionals, who all performed regularly, showed 102 per cent more activity in their auditory cortex than non-musicians" WOW!!! One thing that stood out to me in the article, however, is the large overlap in the figures quoted for the amount of "grey matter" in Heschl's gyrus of the three groups. I'm no statisitician but to me this would seem to make it difficult to draw strong conclusions such as "Musicians have bigger and more sensitive brains than people who do not play instruments". However, the differences are definitely there and this study seems to again indicate that musicians do indeed have "more developed" auditory areas than non musicians, a fact that, i suppose, feels somewhat intuitive. Again, thanks for posting that link; i think i want to read that paper. As y'all know, I'm a big fan of those Taylor brothers. If you haven't seend him, his quite a showman. Different from JT; more of a performer. A master of the stage.
