Hi Bob. I know this was rhetorical, but I don't think it's the being dead that's so bad, it's how we get there. Like, if someone told me "ok, well you have cancer and some night you'll just go to sleep and won't wake up but you'll be ok until then" I'd be bummed, but not terrified. On the other hand, if someone told me I'd waste away to nothing, be in excruciating pain, undergo the typical "slash, poison, and burn" therapies, etc..., well that just scares the sh*t out of me! So, I think that's why. BTW, lest anyone think I'm "so close to that line" I guess I'm not. They say, after a laundry list of FDA mandated tests, I guess every part of me is incredibly healthy, except the one tumor site. The irony of that is just about beyond belief. So, by JoniFest, I'll be the one with little whiskers, a cute pink nose, beady eyes, a tail, and white fur. You basic lab animal - one of 15 such humans turned lab mouse they're testing this vaccine on. It cured 85% of the real mice... (To the medically minded, the vaccine uses the protein CYP1B1, is manufactured by Zycos, and is called ZYC300.) lots of love Anne NPIMH: my mantra "you should never see it coming" and the cute animation that made the rounds of the internet a few years ago, with the cute alien dancing to "I Will Survive" only to be suddenly squashed. It was hysterical. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 15:01:33 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Funeral Music + Heaven joke, NJC My music choice: Stood Up (John Hiatt w/ Little Village). No pun intended. I agree with Bob's choice of Knockin' on Heaven's Door but am afraid it might be showing optimism. The following joke might take away some of the morbidity of this thread: << This 85-year old couple, having been married almost 60 years, died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years, mainly due to the wife's neurotic interest in health food. When they reached the pearly gates, Peter took them to their mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and Jacuzzi. As they "oohed and aahed", the old man asked St. Peter how much this was going to cost. "It's free," Peter replied, "Remember, this is Heaven." Next they went out to the backyard to see the championship golf course the home backed up to. They would have golfing privileges every day, and each week the course changed to a new one representing the greatest golf courses on Earth. The old man asked, "What are the green fees?" "This is heaven," St. Peter replied. "You play for free." Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisines of the world laid out. "How much to eat?" asked the old man. "Don't you understand yet?" St. Peter asked. "This is heaven. It's free!" "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods?" the old man asked timidly. "That's the best part. You can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven." The old man looked at his wife and said, "You and your fucking bran muffins. I could have been here ten years ago!" I've actually contemplated starting this thread, but thought it would sound too morbid. I only know one song that I would want without a doubt. I was playing "Both Sides Now" (from BSN) in a darkened room one night and it struck me that it would be the perfect song for my funeral. It would reflect a lifetime of listening to her music and pretty much sums things up perfectly: "I really don't know life at all." I don't think there will ever be a time when I do! Kerry NP - Indigo Girls - Language or the Kiss ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 10:31:33 -0400 From: "Marian Russell " Subject: A Joni Mitchell musical evening in Austria! On Friday, I drove down to the tiny village of Lafnitz in the state of Styria, Austria, with my friends singer/songwriter Raya O. Coal and her partner drummer Robin Gillard, to hear a concert of Joni Mitchell music performed by an incredible band of musicans currently residing in Graz, Austria. The concert was held at a tavern called "Irish Pub" - a small piece of Ireland in the wilderness of Austria where you can drink Irish beer and choose from among 40 different types of Irish whiskey! The band consisted of the following persons: Vesna Petkovic' - vocals Martin Woess - keyboards Thomas Mauerhofer - guitar Reinhard Ziegerhofer - bass Ismail Barrios - percussion Aaron Ofner - drums Reinhard Ziegerhofer, the founder of the band, is a classically-trained bass player best known for his participation in and compositions for the Austrian jazz-folk fusion group, Broadlahn. Reinhard was a member of the Graz Symphony Orchestra for eight years, has composed music for film and theatre, and has worked with other well-known musicians such as Vienna avant-garde musician Fritz Novotny, as well as Joe Zawinul, Mario Rechtern, Bill Elgart, Chuck LeMonds, and Monika Stadler. Reinhard can play like Jaco Pastorius. I am not kidding. It is worth buying the Broadlahn CDs just to hear his wonderful bass playing! Vesna (her name means "Springtime" in Russian) was born and raised in Nic', Serbia, and has been studying voice in Graz for a number of years. She normally performs jazz music with her partner (a jazz bass player), but she also sometimes performs with an eleven-member traditional Serbian band where the quality of the singing is very similar to that of the Bulgarian Women's Choir which has been mentioned once or twice here on the list. She and her partner want to move to New York next year to participate in the jazz music scene there. She really has a very beautiful voice - she sang very expressively in the ballads and very powerfully in the rock and roll tunes. Ismail Barrios is from Venezuela, but has lived in Austria for some time and apparently knows most of the Brazilian music contingent in Vienna. He had three large vertical drums and an impressive array of various other percussive devices which he played sensitively into the musical arrangements. He was also really nice to watch - very fluid, energetic, charismatic - exuding happiness and pleasure. Martin Woess (keyboards), Thomas Mauerhofer (guitar), and Aaron Ofner (drums), are all exceptional jazz musicians based in Graz, Austria. I had a chance to ask Thomas about the guitar parts - if he had found www.jmdl.com/guitar/ on the internet. He said he did find a lot of things on the internet. He said before he started preparing for this concert, he had never done any playing in open tunings, so it was new territory for him. I noticed that he used standard tuning for some of the songs rather than the open tunings, but he seemed to have used the JMDL info for Coyote, Amelia, and Woodstock. He must have seen the Painting With Words And Music video to learn the guitar arrangement for Woodstock, as it was pretty true to Joni's recently performed versions and that's the only official version in circulation. Thomas had four guitars set up for the various songs, and even detuned his electric guitar for a couple of the songs. Sometimes he played standard tuning chords dur! ing the singing with amazing lead guitar between verses - in these songs, the supporting chords for the lead guitar were played by Martin on keyboards. The entire band are Joni fans. What is amazing to me is that the band managed to learn all of the songs in only 12 sessions and could play all the songs so perfectly with so little rehearsal. There were all very very professional - it was like seeing Joni in concert, but with a different vocalist - very high quality. All of the arrangements were flawless. The concert opened with the recording of Shadows and Light from Joni's S&L album as the band members came onto the stage and picked up their instruments. This then segued into a rocking version of In France They Kiss On Mainstreet. The setlist was (mostly in this order - I didn't write the order down exactly): In France They Kiss On Main Street How Do You Stop Free Man In Paris Big Yellow Taxi Raised On Robbery Man From Mars Black Crow All I Want Coyote Both Sides Now This Flight Tonight Amelia Dreamland Encore: Woodstock Big Yellow Taxi The most impressive songs for me during the evening were: The ballads - Man From Mars, All I Want, Amelia, Both Sides Now - because Vesna sang them so expressively - I was literally mesmerized by her beautiful voice! In All I Want, the piano was the main supporting instrument and the arrangement was totally gorgeous. Black Crow - they did an amazing and very original arrangement of the song with a sort of jungle rhythm underneath - it was haunting. Vesna spoke the words to the first and last verses, hauntingly over the underlying rhythm and music; the middle verse was sung and was faster and more intense musically. I really can't describe what they did with the song very well, because I am not so familiar with the modern musical genres and don't know what terminology to use - the song had a sort of techno feel to it. I was amazed that Aaron could keep the complicated rhythm going throughout the song - it was very complex. This Flight Tonight - another amazing arrangement - slower than Joni's version with a sort of Blues feel to it. Really nice. Dreamland at the end was fun, because they got the audience singing "Dreamland Dreamland.... Dreamland Dreeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaamland!" and clapping - a good way to end before the encore. The audience was very attentive and very appreciative. There were probably about 60 people there - kind of surprising for such a little place out in the middle of nowhere! The band has only scheduled three concerts. I think they ought to do more, since they are so good, and I think they should also record. I wish I could have a recording of the concert, as it would be something I would enjoy listening to again and again - especially the different arrangements of Black Crow and This Flight Tonight. You can see all the information without registering for the Fest. Check out the Information page and the Question and Answer page for all the detailed information!! Even if you are not planning on attending, you can join in the fun (and greatly help to keep jmdl.com up and running!) and receive a special Jonfest giveaway by making a donation to Les Irvin for the JMDL. The time you have spent here in good company certainly is worth a donation of some sort, don't you think? Please make JMDL donation checks payable to: "Les Irvin" and send to: Ashara Productions, LLC 40 Parsonage Lane Topsfield, MA 01983 There is also a Scholarship Fund to help those that are having financial difficulties getting to Jonifest this year. If you would like to donate to this fund, please make those checks payable to "Ashara Productions, LLC." They are sent to the same address above. Donations for the giveaways and raffle items can also be sent to this address. If you are not sure what kinds of things we are looking for, how about a Joni momento, a CD that you have put out, (Victor? Gregg? Kate? David Lahm? Christene? Jenny? Anne? Bryan?) a Joni songbook, t-shirt, poster, video, book, picture, etc. If you'd like to donate something, but aren't sure what to give, you can always go to e-bay, do a search for Joni Mitchell, and perhaps get something not too pricey. The giveaways and raffle make it much more festive, and also helps to raise money for the JMDL website. To see how far we are spanning the globe this year: This Jonifest represents 21 States, 9 countries, and 5 Continents so far!!!! 'Song of the Wind' by Carlos Santana. I know there are no lyrics but I'd like the audience (is that what they're called? I don't like the word 'mourners') to be thinking along the lines of "Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go". If these songs were played at my cremation I'd be both dead, and grateful. mike in Barcelona and in good health (how's that for Zeugma?) , and touching wood. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 10:36:17 -0500 From: "Donna J. Can somebody please let me know immediately if the joni list received my report about the Austrian Joni Mitchell cover band concert in Lafnitz? I find this attitude rather insulting and have experienced it >> myself, even at my age! geeze!!!! Could it be that some people are >> threatened by us? Could this contempt/disrespect be a way to try and >> throw us off balance? An attempt to knock us down because of the power >> and wisdom and sense of self we gain as we age? Mags, I am not so sure it all comes from "out there." As a matter of fact, I am 43 and feel I am treated the same by others as I always have been. I sense no contempt coming from anyone; the dislike for my changing face comes from my own self, when I see it in a mirror or reflected in a window. My own disappointment in the loss of youthful appearance eats away at my self-confidence about my appearance and causes me to project, to assume that others see me the same way I do. As for contempt, I feel more respected now than I did when I was younger. Those younger than me seem to give it automatically, whether they know anything about me or not (feels a bit like cheating, on my part), and those older are respectful as a matter of course ... good old-fashioned manners, I assume, or maybe the good sense that comes with maturity. >> From: Denny Giovanetti > Anyway, enough of my nonsense. You folk have more important things to do. Ha! You've been lurking long enough to know that jonilisters don't think there are all that many more important things to do than talk about our admiration for joni's genius and the beauty of her musical and lyrical output -- unless it's actually listening to the music itself. Not so curiously, what you don't like one year, you may discover in a new way the next. I still skip over Paprika Plains and the odd other thing as I listen, but I don't write them off forever. One day, I may appreciate them in a way I'm unable to now. She still astounds me, after almost 30 years of listening to her music almost every day. Her songs are so layered that there is always something new coming to my attention. Joni's music is one of the many things of beauty to be enjoyed on this planet. Joni makes my day, so many days. Well folks, forgive me for being about 12 digests behind, probably, by now. We are playing computer roulette around here since I bought a Mac so I could work a couple days a week from home, and the digests have been going to the old computer in the cool, dark basement. I am a light-and-warmth worshipper, so I rarely get down there to watch tv either.
