How you spice up your food is up to you. But whatever you pick, you always share certain choices with others. And you talk about what you share. Food as a sharing experience can be so soothing. I believe that sharing food - particularly preparing meals together - can be a katalyst in solving problems. This reminded be of gentleman friend (former boss) I use to have....when we would go out for dinner he would help himself to my plate before he would dive into his own. NO LIE! I was taken back a little the first time he did this,I must say. He and I both loved food,so I guess he was curious as to what my dish tasted like. He was fair though, because very enthusiastically he would say.."now try mine! Taste mine!" Also, the rice meal you described sounds very interesting. I do a dish similar: Curried chicken.....over rice. Then I have small bowls filled with peanuts, coconut, chutney,(I use Major Grey's. I have never attempted to make my own from scratch)chickpeas, cut up apples....and people choose what they want to top off their dish with. Locking up Arafat and Sharon together in a > kitchen and ask them to prepare a big meal for a combined family dinner in > private? > As a matter of fact, you know Ehud Barak had Arafat over at his home for dinner when he was pm. I'm afraid Arafat's values are too far apart and an agreement won't be reached this way with him. Actually the reason in my opinion that the intifada resumed and that Arafat didn't agree to Barak's peace plan is that they construed Israel's pullout from Lebanon as a sign of weakness, as a sign that force and terrorism would make Israel bend and give more. When I think about it, what's more to give? I mean the west bank and Gaza are under autonomous rule already. The only thing left to give is the state, which would enable Palestinians to do everything as they see fit, including building up an army if they wish. This is where the line must be drawn because so far the leaders have always said (if you look) that they would accept a part of Palestine only as a stepping stone to reposess 100% of the territory. Anyway, I feel now would be the perfect time from the Israeli standpoint to make peace because they have demonstrated they won't bend to terrorism. So now they can make concessions (and they will soon in Washington) which won't be interpreted as a sign of weakness and only raise the other party's expectations. The only problem is Arafat may feel dishonored to make peace after taking a beating and the cycle of violence will resume. As Shimon Perez said, Israel is perfectly willing to give Palestinians what they want under peace and for which they are using violence. I don't understand the dynamics of this phenomenon, but I know that I have been guilty of it -- and the victim of it - -- more times than I care to remember. Personal attacks, however, are another matter. There should be no place here, or anywhere else, for that kind of treatment. I am sorry you've been treated badly. I remembered the feelings I had when I bought the cd. I had read a review of it in Rolling Stone, and remember the review saying something about Joni visiting Rickie Lee Jones territory in Ray's Dads Cadillac. I was also getting into Rickie at that point as well so I rushed out and bought it. I also remember my minister at the church I was going to at the time coming over and I was playing Joni's Night Ride Home and him liking it. When he asked who that was, I told him, oh, it's Joni Mitchell's new album, and he was like, she's around still? Well that year for his birthday I bought another copy of Night Ride Home and gave it to him:-) For me, my favourite songs are the title track, Come in from the cold, and Nothing Can be done. A few things struck me: On the good side I was amazed to see how well they had storyboarded the action, when one considers how fast it moves and from how many different planes the characters bounce around to and from; I never felt disoriented. Some of the computer work was a little cheesy video game like but most won't notice, and that didn't seem to hurt "Titanic" at the box office either. On the bad side was how really creeped out I was by the scenes of NY destruction (having witnessed Sept. 11 live and in person): I'm sure that they did yonks of focus group testing before release to gauge if people would have this reaction and found that I'm probably oversensitive on this issue. (just being honest here, hope I haven't given away too much) The other problems I had were the amount of "comic book violence" (just what does this mean, anyway? isn't violence just that?) and the script having certain characters paraphrasing Jesus Christ in particularly evil context. I'm not a member of the religious right, but I can only predict that some may find this inflammatory. As more see it, I'm curious to see if this becomes an issue. I think this may be the biggest risk taken by this film, given it's intended for a family audience in the USA. Aside: I did have a vicarious thrill in that young Peter Parker's neighborhood was Sunnyside, Queens where I lived for 10 years. Hollywood never came to town while I was there... Overall, it's trash, but it will make a fortune. My point was that the Bonnie song I referenced is nothing special, a pretty average MOR ballad, but in Bonnie's hands it flowers to its potential instead of becoming a withering weed in Ms. Dion's. Meanwhile, a song like "I Can't Make you Love Me" would sound pretty nice regardless of who's singing it. It's just that strong. That's why I like tracking down/listening to all these Joni covers...the songs are usually strong enough to carry the vocalists, and when BOTH are powerhouse, it's a real joy! It was SO interesting and fun to get the various opinions and views from everybody. I remember one interpretation was quite different;myniece's, then fianci, thinks it was about a wedding or partly about a wedding. When he told me this...my reaction was...HUH? Splain yourself boy!! I guess at the time he and my niece were planning their wedding.....so the multitudes...misery.....brought his upcoming wedding to mind. Now Me: :) :) :) Bree, you make me smile. Laurent, it is a piece of racist trash. I can select any grouping of things that I wish to "build" a "case" to "profile" any category of peoples that I want., This email that you forwarded is exactly the same type of racist trash that was and is distrubuted by the Klan, or any number of white Christian supremist organizations, to "prove" that African Americans and Jews are whatever they want to say that African Americans and Jews are. It is easy: jusy select the "facts" to "prove" your "case" and just like the email that you forwarded, the defense is always, "it is the truth, man, look at the facts." For years I used to read this shit growing up about blacks and Jews - racist literature abounds with things like this. South African apartheid defenders used the same type of "reasoning." Now it is directed against Muslim males of a certain age, as in South African, it was used against blacks, colored, and Asians to justify pro-filing, which they were honest enough to call apartheid. And you know what this reminds of most? I posted a few days ago how Holocaust (Shoah) was at the root of everything that I believe and teach and preach. The reason is, because people of my faith and ethnic backgrounds perpetrated the Holocaust - now there is a group to profile, Laurent, white Europeans. After all, no one comes close to white Europeans in the ability to kill 6 million people and inflcit terror. Relatives of Timothy McVeigh, the Unibomber, Milosevic. Anyway I pledged my life to make sure that if I ever saw signs of Holocaust again, I would raise my voice before it happened, when the warning signs were there, because that is one thing (of many) that we owe to the 6 million. And what this profiling email reminds me of is the anti-Semitic propaganda of the Nazis. This is just a cyber version of the Elders of the Protocols of Zion, which was also filled with "facts" and "dates" and even pictures of the "Jewish conspirators" and which was defended as being 'the facts, man, look at it, it is all right here.' And then the Nazis added, Who burned the Reichstag? A legally convicted Jew! And they added whatever other facts they had to prove that the Jews needed to be profiled, looked at closely, and subject to profiling by the authorities -- so Stars of David and ther word "Juden" were painted on their stores (damn Jews, they are everywhere, have to identify them) a nd you had to profile them when they traveled so mark their passports with the phrase "Juden" because we could not travel safely unless we could identify the Jews and watch them, and then of course to make profiling easier, Jews had to wear the Star of David. A Jew traveling had to be searched, they were smuggling, they were stealing, they were a threat to our safety and security. Then of coursed they had to be kept separate from us, put them in the ghetto. Anytime, from anyone, I see this type of profiling racist trash being passed around, I will protest, and I don't care who is passing it out or what the ramifications are, or who the victims are of the trash that is being distributed. Let me clear: you said you passed this on, you did not write it, but you disseminatted racist filth in doing so, and any moral authority you claim so far is now gone in my opinion. I don't give a damn what you think about me, but then again, I will not be silent in the face of this. I am not a Jew. I am not an Arab. I am a Christian., And people ion the name of my faith have done terrible thinsg by keeping silent. When I was ordained into my church as a member of the clergy, the following was very much in the theology of every one who took part in that service: First they came for the Communists, and I didnt speak up, because I wasnt a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didnt speak up, because I wasnt a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didnt speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me. by Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945, survivor of Dachau, imprisoned 1937-1945 in fact because he did speak out, one of the few pastors of the Confessing Church who was not killed by the Nazis. I don't know that I could survicve Dachau for 8 years, but I can survive being flamed in the JMDL, so go to it, but that profiling thing is racist and filth of the lowest order. Mercury will be retrograde from May 15 to June 8, but you will feel the slowdown sooner, as early as May 7 or before. With such a strong emphasis on domestic, family matters, and career, you can probably expect to receive some important papers for your signature. If you can help it, don't sign anything until AFTER June 8. If you do act you may regret it, as the situation will remain fluid all month. In this highly changeable environment, chances are you are missing pieces of vital information that won't be given to you until next month. Be patient. I doubt you will be able to announce a home or family-related decision until June 10, the date of the solar eclipse. This is part of my personal horoscope, but you're right Mark. Bravo is doing a series of programs on songwriters. I happened to catch Deborah Harry & Chris Stein awhile ago as part of this series. It was interesting and Debbie can still sing as well as ever. She did a couple of songs with Chris & another guy playing acoustic guitars, 'One Way or Another' (I'm gonna gitcha gitcha gitcha gitcha gitcha) and a really pretty song from 'No Exit' that used some of her upper register. Gorgeous. I never realized what a fine voice she has. The interviewer was trying really hard to get Debbie to make some comment on the debt Madonna owes her as far as image, etc are concerned. Debbie dodged the questions and didn't comment on the Material Girl. Shows class, imo.
