Marian, thanks for this info...as you can guess I'm anxious for them to record! :~) You should be a part of this group as you're a master of Joni's material. Off the top of my noggin, here are some general "trivia" nuggets: < Subject: Re: New York Rules!!!(njc) My turn. I'll be in NYC from June 26th to July 1. Love to be there as the Pride festivities peak. One thing we have planned is dinner and going to see the legendary Barbara Cook in concert June 30th at Lincoln Center. Would love to have one and all meet us either for the concert, dinner, or both. I always end up at Judy's to see and hear David several times so maybe a meet and greet there one evening and some music and eats somewhere. Whatever. Just want to male sure I meet up with the JMDLNY's. Always a highlight of my annual trek. This is a good start and a big help. I started trying to write some trivia and I could only remember something about a rain king for BSN and the thing about the inspiration for Man From Mars being one of Joni's cats and that Joni didn't go to Woodstock. Trivia really isn't my forte! I'm sure the band will be very appreciative for this and any other bits of trivia that anyone here can think of. > I would encourage the band to explore > http://www.jonimitchell.com > and > http://www.jmdl.com > I'm sure they can come up with REAMS > of info about these songs. This is of course really excellent advice! I'm not sure what their computer situation is or if they will have time to do a lot of research before they begin their scheduled concerts, though, and I think they were hoping to save some time by asking me (and also effort, because they are probably most comfortable reading things in German and probably find it difficult and tiring to search through all the available English info for the specific trivia gems). Since I'm not that great at trivia and I know there are folks on the list like you who remember all the little bits and pieces, I thought I would try asking on the band's behalf. So, thanks to you Bob, we've now got a few bits and pieces for the songs: Both Sides Now This Flight Tonight Woodstock All I Want Big Yellow Taxi Free Man In Paris Man From Mars How Do You Stop Can anyone add to the above, or supply some info for these: Raised On Robbery Amelia Black Crow Coyote Dreamland In France They Kiss On Main Street > Marian, thanks for this info...as you can > guess I'm anxious for them to record! :~) > You should be a part of this group as you're > a master of Joni's material. It would be kind of hard to be in the band because they live far away from Vienna, but of course I would love being in a band with people who love Joni's music as much as I do. Maybe I should try to start such a band in Vienna! In any case, I hope I will be able to go to the show at Lafnitz. If I do go I might be able to sing one or two songs as a guest, and I will take pictures and send a report to the list. Thanks again, Bob. Marian, I don't know if this is much help but when I produced our SB Tribute, I had the performers play in chronological order & in between the songs I read some info that I had compiled from the JM website...I wasn't sure if this would work but the feedback I got from the audience is that they loved hearing all sorts of info about Joni that was new to them. It wasn't specific to the songs so much as about her life during those periods. ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 13:07:58 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: How Do You Stop In a message dated 5/2/2002 8:13:03 AM Eastern Daylight Time, SCJoniGuy@aol.com writes: > How Do You Stop: A Dan Hartman song (he also wrote the 80's hit 'I Can Dream > About You' and many others) and a single for James Brown, which is how it > came to Joni's attention. > The lyrics section of the JMDL says HDYS was written by Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight. None of the sites I looked at delineated who did what. BUT Hartman & Midnight wrote the entire "Gravity" project for JB (a South Carolina native). "Living In America" was the most well-known song from Gravity. I'm sure the statement about "Midnight writing for Joni Mitchell" is relative to this song, and is sort of like saying that Joni writes for Jim Nabors! LOL! My hunch is that they're more of a "Lennon-McCartney" team than a "Rodgers-Hart" team; that is that both Hartman & Midnight write both words & music. The mystery continues... Covers #29 WOW! I can't believe that May is already here...time for me to release another CD in the continuing "Joni Covers" saga: Three cheers for the great folks who helped me gather up these recordings: Monica Cardinale Stephen Elliott Here's what you'll find on this month's volume: 1. Patrick Regan Band - The Dawntreader: The ONLY other recording of this song I'm aware of...and I love it, it features both male & female vocals, the guy reminds me of Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies. And I love the arrangement and instruments, really fleshes out one of Joni's best melodies beautifully. 2. Enzo Pietropaoli - River: An Italian jazz bassist, Enzo is supported here by a nice female voice, Maria Pia de Vito. 3. Mia Martini - Taxi Giallo: Speaking of eye-talian, here's a version of Big Yellow Taxi sung in the Italian tongue. Mama Mia! 4. Joel Grey - Both Sides Now: Joel will probably always be remembered for his role as the Emcee in Cabaret. I doubt he'll be remembered much for this. 5. Roberto Ottaviano - Sweet Sucker Dance: More Italian jazz, this is a gorgeous recording from saxophonist Ottaviano and a full jazz quintet. Tiziana Ghiglioni provides the vocal. Love it. 6. The Carol Hamersma Trio - Chelsea Morning: Carol's a jazz guitarist, and combines some fine playing with a very nice vocal. 7. Krystyna Olsiewicz - Carey: Krystyna needs to spin the wheel of fortune and buy some vowels! She's a prodigy of avant-garde recording artist R. Stevie Moore, and this reading of Carey is actually pretty straightforward. 8. Kiri Te Kanawa - Both Sides Now: Maybe SHE should have done Carey and called it Kiri! ;~) A somewhat stuffy operatic version. 9. Bobby & I - Michael From Mountains: Don't know anything about this group, just that they recorded in the mid-70's, and thankfully chose this one instead of you-know-what! 10. Eugene von Beethoven - All I Want: Speaking of avant-garde, this one may be the weirdest one yet! The "Eugene" is Eugene Chadbourne, who plays his guitar with a rake at times and puts out a new CD about every month! The "von Beethoven" is Camper von Beethoven, and they joined forces with Chadbourne to make this live record. It's almost undescribable in it's strangeness, yet it has some potential in terms of the arrangement. 11. London Pops Orchestra - Woodstock: A ho-hum orchestral version of the Matthews Southern Comfort arrangement. 12. Jane Henderson - Both Sides Now 13. Jane Henderson - All I Want: These were a VERY pleasant surprise, I loved them both. Jane's got a pretty pleasing voice, and the beauty of these helps to cleanse the listening palate from #10! 14. Blind Guardian - This Flight Tonight: Wouldn't be a complete volume without the required heavy-metal TFN! 15. Lillian Ho - The Circle Game: Wouldn't be a complete volume without the required Asian femvox Circle Game! 16. Rod McKuen - Both Sides Now: Never knew what this guy's appeal was, his voice makes Bonnie Tyler & Rod Stewart sound crystalline. I'm not sure I've ever listened to this one all the way through! Maybe he's a better poet. 17. Jude - Morning Morgantown: Fun, poppy version of MM. A very obscure & hard-to-find recording. Don't know anything about these guys either. 18. Art Lande - For Free: Well, we at least close the volume out with a very lovely selection; a solo piano version of For Free from jazz pianist Art Lande, who recorded an album of songs in 3/4 time that this comes from. He improvs a bit, and the result is a wonderful 5+ minute recording that leaves you longing for more! So there you have it...stay tuned to win a free copy! Bob NP: R.
