The 9 stories in the movie were all written by women, and they each concerned themselves with the stated subject of love in its many forms. Others involved in the film in addition to Joni were Edna O'Brien, Lady Antonia Fraser, Penelope Gilliatt, Gale Greene, Nancy Dowd, Liv Ullmann, and Mai Zetterling, who directed her own segment, Edna O'Brien's, and Joni's. Joni's 14 1/2 minute vignette presented her as a black male pimp named "ART NOUVEAU", dressed in the same drag she wore on the cover of 1977's "DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER". Joni originally came up with this character when she had to create a persona for a Halloween party. The soundtrack she chose for herself was mostly Miles Davis music, as she told her hometown paper at the start of the project: "My vision of the relationship between the soundtrack and the visuals is very precise. The character I play, for instance, is a Miles Davis fan, and he carries the soundtrack around with him on a big portable cassette player". Joni also contributed the title song "Love", played over the opening credits, which she wrote setting the words of a poem from Corinthians to her music. The film's producers kept extending the release date further and further, a year, then 2 years. As late as 1985 there were still rumblings about a release, but as far as I'm aware, the completed film has never to this day had even one showing in theaters. I have had word of "Love" being shown during small film festival weekends." Bob, playing catch-up... Joni's character is not actually the pimp but a woman dressing up as one for a costume party. I think she sees someone she used to go with or wants to go with or maybe doesn't want to go with at the party. Kind of hazy on that point I guess, but it was a long time ago. The gist of my opinion was that Shawn (with and without Levanthal) and Jonatha have made music that surpasses much of Joni's post-DJRD music. For sure, there is really no other sole practitioner singer/songwriter/producer who has produced a series of nine consecutive masterpieces (her first nine studio albums). Joni is the rare, once or twice in a lifetime, genius. And once again I'll reaffirm that no perceived failing of her later work can in any way diminish her earlier achievement. >by the way fred, i'm not familiar with >your work, how does it stack up against joni's ? There were 4 gorgeous photos of Joni, from 1970-72 era, and of course lots of others of Jackson, Zappa, Neil, CSNY, and some just released new shots of Janis and many many others. He had a couple of album covers up with the photos beside them. And all of them (autographed & numbered by Diltz) were for sale! I find this post interesting in relation to the article that Kakki so very kindly singled out from the Toronto Globe & Mail from 1969. Joni talked about starting with a producer when she recorded 'Clouds' but then deciding to go it on her own because she felt stifled. She confesses that the sound isn't as good as it could be 'but at least I know I'm doing what I want to do.' So it seems that in 1969, anyway, sonic perfection was not one of her goals. Kakki was right. This is a very interesting article and it seems that many of Joni's characteristics as an artist back then are still very much part of her makeup today. You have probably gone and come back from New York. I hope that everyone had a great time. Consider that you may need to be somewhere that enables you to make a contact, or open a door for your music. I don't know. I can't seem to get this out of my head. I've just seen that when a door closes this abruptly and painfully, something even greater awaits you ahead. Please think about this and keep your eyes open for opportunities coming around the bend.
