Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Joni were the main attractions. More info: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/720429nyt.cfm 1991: [Today] music channel VH-1 aired a "VH-1 to 1" special called "NIGHT RIDE HOME" that was a full half hour of interview, video bits, and teasingly short peeks of Joni playing the instrumental part of "Cherokee Louise." The special also featured a display of quite a few of her paintings from various eras, and many shots of the double exposure photographs that she and Klein had taken in Canada in 1990. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Apr 2002 08:00:04 EDT From: Gertus@aol.com Subject: "About a Boy" I haven't actually seen the film yet but have been avidly reading the reviews which are generally favourable. Sadly though, from what I can glean, the Joni content has been replaced by......The Carpenters! Not being a Carpenters fan, I find this depressing. I had better reserve judgement until I've seen the film but until then I can only surmise that they needed someone with a "cheesier" image than Joni's. Even worse, I was out late drinking tequila and singing bad songs at a karaoke bar (the only Joni title was Help Me). I thought that I might have written the poorly phrased, ill conceived post. Yikes. Nothing worse than those late-night drunken messages. Search the archives for posts last Labor Day if you need any examples. Thanks for the quick post Les. I would have been going crazy today trying to figure out what I was thinking when I wrote that. So my next question, should I warn those on my contact list about this virus? Do you think I have inadvertantly spread it elsewhere or was I just a random name that was selected? Sue n.p. (the Rev) Vince Artifical Intelligence - I got this because of all the recent discussion on it and liked it much better than anyone else seemed to. I was surprized that Spielberg could be so faithful ro Stganley Kubrick, and it was a Kubrick film all the way; Given that, taking Kibrick's career artistic vision as the concept that I as the viewer was entering, I thought it was a super fine movie. The "Flesh Fair" scenes were a direct rip on Gladiator and so I enjoyed it. And Haley Joel Osment - what an outstanding actor. Life as a House - good flick, a bit predictable, but then so was I Am Sam which I liked so much. The young star Hayden Christensen who plays Anikin Skywalker in the new Star wars, that kid can act. I had seen an interview in whioch he said he was glad that Life casme out before Star Wars since he wanted America's first impression of Anikin Skywalker was to be in makeup, inhaling, hanging himself while masturbating, which is how we meet him in Life as a House. A good film to watch with someone you love, especially for this line of dialogue spoken by Kevin Kline: "There is no doubt in my mind, in all my anger and my ego, I was always faithful in my love for you. That I made you doubt it was the great mitsake of a life full of mistakes. The truth doesn;t set us free. I can tell you I love you as many times as you can stand it and the only thing it does is remind us tyat love is not enough, not even close." Of course before the movie is over we discover that love is enough. Training Day: good suspense film, held by interest, some nice plot twists. Momento: incredible film, and while I thought I had figured out the big ending (which in this case is the beginning because the movie plays out backwards) it sure fooled me. This was a movie that I had to watch intently, just fascinayted by the sophiscation of the plot and script, and the very cool acting by Guy Pearce especisally but by everyone in the cast. One of the most intriguing films ever. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: as sophomoric as this movie is at times, one of the more amusing films that I have seen, very clever and funny a lot of times much more than I had suspected. This is the type of humor we are supposed to outgrow but it had me laughing but then again I buy Linkin park albums too so my maturity was long ago arrested. The fact that every time the movie is about to lapse into a predictable dumb movie it twists the joke enough to a new level was clever to me, and the rip offs of (or homages to) oter movies, especially Ben Aflleck and Matt Damon films, was funny. So was seeing Mark Hamill playing Cock-knocker and doing the light saber fight from the original Star Wars while combating Jay who is doing the Darth Maul duel light saber number from Phantom Menance. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Apr 2002 17:29:55 EDT From: KLCass21@aol.com Subject: Joni Films Hi, Just received PWWAM on DVD (Shadows & Light DVD on the way - Yippee!). I showed up at the Greenville airport three hours early, because when I was in Atlanta I kept hearing over and over, show up early, show up early...and it didn't occur to me that there would be NO ONE THERE at Greenville at 9 in the morning. But as I didn't have alot to do, I sat around writing and ended up writing a new song, which I finished up on the plane, called "Heavenly Eyes" that just flowed out like water...I came up with the music this morning at Kay's and I just love it...I guess my muse has finally returned. I spent a few hours at the MET musuem and it completely tired me out so I suspect I will head back to Kay's soon. I'm going to try hitting an open mic tomorrow night and then I head back on Tuesday. more later, Victor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Apr 2002 17:37:49 -0400 From: Subject: Greetings from Bleeker Street!(njc) I arrived safely in New York yesterday afternoon. I think it may be a different album or possibly I think she had worked with all of the members of Miles' second classic Quartet and those would be, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony WIlliams and Ron Carter. I think the liner notes to the Mingus album she mentions working with Mr. Williams and Mr. Carter in rehearsals. If she did work with all of the Kind of Blue musicians, she would have worked with John Coltrane (who died in 1967), Bill Evans, and others that have left my mind for the time being. I WISH she had worked with Coltrane.. That would have been OTHERWORLDLY!! SO, unfortunately, I think she worked with the former, second classic quartet members. She has said several times that the sound on "Nefertitti" and title track of the same name was a sound she tried to emulate with some of her guitar work on Hejira in particular. That is all from here. Blair, NOW 22 :) If I recall, she once said that >she has worked with everyone who was on "Kind Of Blue" >in particular. Check out some of the previously uncredited musicians in this excerpt from Rhino's history of the Monkees: "After Rhino's 1994 purchase of everything Monkees-related, including all sound recordings released and unreleased; all 58 episodes of the TV series; the film Head; and the hour-long TV special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee (even the Monkees logo now belongs to Rhino), the label embarked on a massive reissue campaign of all nine original albums: The Monkees; More Of The Monkees; Headquarters; Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.; The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees; Head; Instant Replay; The Monkees Present; and Changes. In addition to the original lineups, each album contains a bonanza of bonus tracks, alternate versions, different mixes, non-LP A- and B-sides, unissued songs, live cuts, and radio spots. For the first time, musician credits are provided for each track, at long last detailing who played what. There are some eye-opening revelations here, as such stalwarts of American music as Harry Nilsson, James Burton, Earl Palmer, Hal Blaine, Leon Russell, Jack Nitzsche, Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles, and many more are identified as collaborators and contributors to The Monkees' recordings." Also Peter Tork and Stephen Stills were good friends back then and both tried out for the Monkees - but Tork won the part. So I picked out Norah Jones at Target and brought it back to my office. After all Brian is behind her on most of the songs. After "Don't Know Why" the track that is playing on Kink Fm I start to notice a certain whisper in her voice this is mildly distracting. After all 14 tracks were done I played it again to trying to figure out where her music was coming from, the bluesy pop sound is rather simple to shake my foot to but my heart had nothing to hold on to except her pretty brown eyes on the cd cover. So to compare her voice I listened next to Madeleine Peyroux / Dreamland Cd Her Lady Day voice is tight and pure no whisper, the fantasic Cyrus Chesnut backs her up on "Reckless Blues" by Bessie Smith. Sure Norah Plays ok piano but imagine Ray Charles behind her on "Cold Cold Heart" or the "Nearness of You". Next for a spin is Holly Cole, Blame it on my youth CD Holly has a whisper in her voice but knows how to use it differently on each song plus she has the ability to rein! vent and reenergize songs like "I'll be Seeing You" and "Honey Suckle Rose". The producer for Norah, Arif Mardin could be assigned the credit for creating a collection of songs sounding a little too mellow. Maybe Greg Cohen the producer for Holly and Madeliene's CD would have brought out the Eartha Kitt that resides closer to her heart which is apparent in track 7 "You Turn Me On". In a previous list there was some poetry about roses as a "rosamane" I can only add that Hybrid Tea roses are the working girls of my garden you have to really pay up front ( with the fertilizer ) before you bring the blooms in to your bedroom. How bad am I a Rosamane, well last year my mission was to breed a yellow and pink edged climbing rose by crossing Eden with Lawrence Johnston at this point I have some germinating rose seeds giving me some hope.
