I think there are two separate issues here. The VG-8 is problematic in the way that all synths have always been problematic when compared with acoustic or even electro-acoustic (i.e., regular electric guitar) instruments. Synths lack the ever-changing, nearly infinite amount of minute variations and nuances in sound that acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments have. Microscopic details of tone in every millisecond of time convey a vast range of emotion and musicality that synths can't. But the other reason I would never say that Clouds or Hejira sound "all the same" as I would about TTT is because of my now annoyingly repetitive complaint about the lack of melodic/harmonic inspiration and invention in Joni's later work. Hejira definitely has an overall sonic sameness (inherent in its design and part of its genius) -- multi-tracked electric and acoustic guitars, Jaco's liquid bass, minimal percussion, vibraphone, Joni's long recitative-like melodies -- and this sameness is a far richer tapestry than synths can impart. Also, within this sonic sameness is an abundance of inspired melodic/harmonic invention and interest. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 10:12:45 +0100 From: Gordon Mackie Subject: This missionary position >Willy, my child, my father... > >Joni compared to Dr Livingstone. I know this, combined with the lack of production on most of the songs after the first two, lead to me feeling every song sounded the same. TTT is the only Joni CD I haven't taken to university with me, and I haven't missed it once, save for MFM - I'd *LOVE* to hear the 'Grace of My Heart' version of MFM. It was a complete version, I believe, and the quality was fine. As compared to the record, there is a solo by Jaco (none by Don) and she does Raised on Robbery, but the last two "album" cuts (Woodstock and GMBABM) as well as Dreamland are not shown. I do not know the Santa Barbara County Bowl from a hole in the ground, so I cannot confirm the venue (the audience was noticeably young to my old eyes). It does have the opening video scenes from Rebel W/O, as well as the Frankie Lymon shots, the Coyote video, and the Hejira video with Toller Cranston, the Amelia shots, Las Vegas on DCFDM, and the appearance by Art Nouveau, etc.) She looked gorgeous (I would underscore this by noting that, given the critical hits she had been taking at that time, her countenance seemed unfettered throughout the performances - here was a person doing exactly what she wanted and was meant to be doing, with no apparent regrets). " it really is true for me. i will say that after TI, which gets alot of airplay from me, i was just a tad disappointed in TTT. ( it quickly grew on me.) i can identify with some of the points made for and against the work as a whole. i beleive it was kakki who mentioned joni had wanted a lush orchestra for TTT, odd she should say this , i found myself wanting to turn up the volume when i played it thinking there was something in the music i was missing. ( ie. a distinction of the different instruments being played.) then i just settled on the opinion that it was just joni experimenting with her new plaything.( the VG-8 ) i personally do think the lyrics are wonderful. who wouldn't be moved by: he wrote, " i wish you were with me here the leaves are electric they burn on the river bank countless, heatless flames ! " i said, " well, send me some pictures then and i'll paint pyrotechnic explosions of your autumn till we meet again i miss your touch and your lips so much... i long for your next embrace ! " i mean...i don't know about any of you but i've got gooseflesh going on here !!! i do think TTT has many strong points and they balance out the weak ones. some of joni's work is a little more realized than others , but what fun it is to go on any journey which joni wants me to take. i will say without joni i wouldn't have gone some of the places i been musically and my life would be less rich for it. again i will say my favorite joni album is whatever one i am listening to at the moment ! bring on the joni, warren keith p.s. for those of you who haven't heard cassandra wilson's new release i'd hardily recommend it ! However, she is so enraged at the decision against the Detroit Boat Club - which means that Joni will never be able to build a cabana on Lake St. Claire and fulfill her dream as a suburban matron - that she puts down her apron, picks up a guitar, heads to downtown Detroit to sing the blues, and the rest, as they say, is history. Issues: Claims of fraud in the inducement and misrepresentation Court: Michigan Court of Appeals (Unpublished) Case Name: Detroit Boat Club v. Shore Club Apartments & Marina e-Journal Number: 14590 Judge(s): Per Curiam - Doctoroff, Cavanagh, and Gage The trial court did not err in granting defendants summary disposition on the basis of the alleged misrepresentation because there was no genuine issue of material fact regarding the misrepresentation related to defendant-Gatzaros's statement that his offer to build a facility for plaintiff was subject to zoning approval. Plaintiff argued the misrepresentation was premised on Gatzaros's statements the rezoning of the property at issue would not be a problem because he had a relationship with the City of St. Clair Shores where the facility was to be built. The court concluded the representation regarding the likelihood of success of a request for rezoning was clearly not based on a statement of past or existing fact, and was more like a promise Gatzaros did not keep. A claim for misrepresentation predicated on such a fact must fail.
