By no means did she look "old" or a "sea hag," whatever that is (she looked her age, more or less). Of course I'm sure she has aged some since then (boy, have I!), but I really think, as some others have said, that her "look" is largely dependent on whether she's showing her joy or her bitterness or disappointment or whatever it is that seems to trouble her sometimes. Anyway, as always, here's wishing her good health and lots of reasons for joy. 'Wildflowers' is a wonderful recording! I wasn't expecting an album of songs arranged for orchestral instruments. It's really quite unique & beautiful. Lately I'm fascinated by 'Albatross'. When I first heard it I couldn't figure what the hell it was about. But the more I've listened to it the more it becomes clear to me. If anyone wants to hear my idea of what it's about or wants to tell me what their interpretation is, I will ask you to email me off list since this is Joni's discussion list, not Judy's. I would love to hear from anybody who cares to chime in!" I bought Wildflowers when I was in college - in 1969 I think - not too long after it came out. I cannot recall exactly why I bought it, but I am pretty certain it was because I loved Both Sides Now when I heard it on the radio. I got more than I bargained for. It became my introduction to Joni (both sides of the album open with Joni songs - MFM starting side one). At this point, Joni was only a name on the Wildfowers album cover to me. I agree with Mark's assessment of Wildflowers - an album of beautiful songs, beautifully arranged and conducted by Joshua Rifkin, sung by a beautiful voice. In addition to the 2 Joni classics, there are 3 songs from Leonard Cohen (Sisters of Mercy, Priests and Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye - can anyone else see the connection between these titles and the Leonard/Joni pairing ?). Also a gorgeous Jacques Brel song, La Chanson des vieux amants - "The Song of Old Lovers". So, how's that for paying attention to lyrics and melody? To which Judy added 3 of her own songs - including the haunting Albatross (was this a bold move by her - pitting her own work next that of the aforementioned trio ?). Two of the songs are foreign language songs - the Brel and one in Italian, I believe - gorgeous. I loved this album so much that - to this day - every time my father and I get together the conversation goes "I know you're crazy about Judy Collins." "Joni Mitchell, Dad." And we both smile. I also loved it so much that - a year or so later - my roommate said to me "Since you like Wildflowers so much, I think you might enjoy this", and lent me his copy of the newly released LOTC. It took me a short while to get used Joni's less accessible voice, but of course from that point on, I was hooked. I assume that most of those on this list are familiar with Wildflowers, but for those who are not and might consider going back 30 something years to pick up a classic, I think you will find that this record holds up very, very well. We did manage to party again on Friday night and went out to dinner with my other friends that were visiting from Chicago. We had a fabulous time in a new restaurant that my friends opened here on Lee Circle (very french me oui). Jack picked us up in a stretch limo and dropped us off in style. While we were there eating and having a grand old time several models (of the female persuasion) came in and were seated at a table near us. They were very striking and commanded the rooms attention for quite some time after that. Well that's until all of a sudden they one by one got up from their table and came over to ours and planted kisses on Yael, after that WE were the center of attention (they must have thought we were somebody for sure after all that). It was one of the most erotic things I have ever seen and it was in public. After that my other friend asked one of the girls and give me a kiss which did and quite well I might add (ok so she was a cute blonde and that made all the difference). After we finished our dinner I had to go over and give them all a kiss good-bye and thank them for there enthusiasm (I am sure that's what Julius would have done). We went back to my friends hotel room (which was closer to an apartment/condo) and played music into the night and of course had a few rousing choruses of Come Pick Me Up. While he is no Ryan Adams (LOL) he has some neat stuff, mostly based around a blues type format. This live recording has a cover of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. I think the best song on this recording is one called 2002, which sound very autobiographical, after reading your post. One of the songs I like the best on this recording is a song called Lorena and there is another bluesy one with rap type vocal that is cool called Bullets. He has a real rap type thing running thru him and even colourful lyrics filled with expletives. I would be happy to send you a copy of this if you wanna check it out. I received your demo this week and was truly blown away with your singing and the recording itself as well. My faves are Walk on By and Do What You Love (obviously Sherelle!!!). I wish you the most success and also would love to help you in any way I can. Have you thought about trying to do BG-Vox for someone else as a way in (so to speak). I see your style fitting in with many types of artists. Look what happened to Sheryl Crow. Your demo sounds great and could get your foot in the door to do someone's tour which can lead to contacts and many other chances for you (not to mention more money to finish your record). Someone like Michael Frank's might be a good start cause he is kindof a weekend warrior these days which means you might be able to hold down multiple jobs. Just a thought. Hope to see you at an upcoming gathering and be able to hear you live and have the chance to play with you. May you have many blessings in your endeavours. And thanks for this post and I agree to the utmost me too. When you are someone as beautiful and talented as she you are bound to absorb stuff thru the media and other demons so that people think they own a part of you and feel like they can make some stupid comment like Hopper did. The same goes for her sex life. I get crazy when they beat that stuff into the ground. As far as Yes goes well don't get me started there either. I love the new album now although I had a little trouble with it at first. I really like the orchestra, but miss the keyboards. I have been to so many Yes shows I have lost count (which may account for the other part of your question). It was funny one night having a martini with friends (go figure) we were discussing Yes and Close to the Edge specifically when I ran to the cd case to get only to realize I did not have it on CD (lost stolen or I was stoned). I had like 20 versions of it live and I had the album, but did not have the CD and that's what we were talking about (the diff between album and CD). Loved the post about Carly too. I didn't see any mention of Joni in the credits. It will be on the website, though, and perhaps on a soundtrack cd so maybe a few new Joni fans will be captured. What a perfect use of that song! I think the tape was labeled "Sarah's Tape" so it was probably a compilation of songs of the times Sarah had made, and Joni was there. To see Claire's mother singing along to the tape alone in the kitchen was just too great. The show has consistently been terrific, but this one was the best. Willie the Shake emailed me on this subject and I told him that I used to think Wakeman was what made Close To the Edge so great but now I've revised my opinion. The keyboards are awesome but boy howdy, Steve Howe's guitar really makes this record! I'm sure this change of heart has a lot to do with being on this list. My appreciation for guitar playing has really grown since being exposed to what you all have to say on the subject, not to mention hearing Paz and Marian and Terry and others play at Jonifest. She let me borrow the Patty > one the other day and I love every song on this record. Speaking of Patty Griffin, last night I managed to catch a rerun of the Austin City Limits Songwriters Special that was taped a couple of years ago. Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Buddy & Julie Miller & Dave Matthews, all sitting on the stage trading songs, playing & singing with one another. It was awesome! Dave Matthews performed a couple of songs from the then unreleased 'Everday' accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and they were gorgeous! I have to say that I saw Patty Griffin a few years ago open for Lucinda Williams and I wasn't that impressed with her. But last night I really enjoyed the sound of her voice. She & Julie Miller both have a way of going straight for the heart. Very soulful & beautiful singing voices. Patty sang backup on one of Julie's songs & it was very haunting & beautiful. And of course Emmylou is always awesome. She & Dave's duets on 'Gulf Coast Highway' and 'Long Black Veil' were so beautiful.... And I still contend that Buddy Miller can play anything that has strings. I'm so glad I caught this show because I had only seen part of it before. It was stellar from beginning to end.
