His primary instrument is bass; he played and recorded with, among others, Josef Zawinul, co-founder of Weather Report. But in the Pat Metheny Group he sings while Steve Rodby maintains the powerful bass base, as he has for 20 years. And just wait until you hear "Another Life" ... a Richard Bona chorale. Speaking of Brazilian music, have you ever heard these albums: - Native Dancer - Wayne Shorter & Milton Nascimento (also with Herbie Hancock); Milton (1976) - Milton Nascimento (also with Wayne and Herbie); and Awa Yio - Ivan Lins. I've enjoyed her music and slide guitar style for the longest time. I heard and fell in love with Raitt's cover of "That Song About the Midway" before I heard Joni's own version. About the same time I became enamored with Raitt's haunting rendition of Joel Zoss' song "Too Long at the Fair." I very much appreciate her reverence for the blues, too, and she just strikes me as a sweetheart of a woman. As if that's not enough, she also has the cutest dimples since Shirley Temple, imho. :-,) Bonnie has a house in Mill Valley here in Marin county, so I see her from time to time in bookstores and such. In fact, Bonnie Hayes, another Marinite and a great musician in her own right, who I've become friends with over the years, wrote "Love Letter" and "Have a Heart" for Raitt. (What good is a discussion list if one can't drop a few names every now and then, eh? I'm reminded of a line Stockard Channing spoke in one of my favorite movies, "Six Degrees of Separation". "Let's not be star-fuckers," she said. Sage advice. But I digress. :-) There's an article about Raitt in the entertainment section of today's San Francisco Chronicle, incidentally. Apparently, her latest CD "Silver Lining" is due to be released this coming Tuesday. It's said to be a rocker. A New Orleans funkster named John Cleary plays piano and sings on the disc and wrote some of the songs. (You know him, Paz?) Sitting here, I'm remembering how much Bonnie Raitt's music really sends me and I'm thinking that I should make myself a Bonnie Raitt compilation disc to travel with. I'll put the aforementioned songs on it in addition to "Love Me Like a Man," "You've Been In Love Too Long," "Woman Be Wise," one of my all-time favs "What Is Success?" then there's "Angel From Montgomery" and her re-working of Del Shannon's 60's classic "Runaway" and "Since I Fell For You" from her first album, and the Karla Bonoff penned "Home." Yes, they're mostly covers, but Bonnie makes them all her own, I think. She did write at least one of the songs on the new CD, according to the Chronicle article. Thanks again for the report, Susan, and thank God for Bonnie Raitt. - -Julius > Now grant it Bonnie may not be in my top 5 singers, more like top 10. The review I read starts by saying "Once Warner Bros. Records ruled the charts, flourishing with acts as rich and diverse as Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac and Frank Zappa. But this was more than simply a successful record label, it was a country club of a company where artists actually liked executives and the executives really liked the music. It was proof that art and commerce could live together happily." I'm gonna check it out just for kicks. Love Joni's version, but Bonnie's is far better. If you're looking for a solid Bonnie compilation, Julius, she's got a good one out from 1990, "The Bonnie Raitt Collection", that has a lot of what you mentioned plus a very cool live duet with her mentor Sippie Wallace on "Women Be Wise". There's a single bare tree nicely framed in the window so you can see the silhouette in the moonlight. In the distance, the city is dark mostly and hidden by trees but one tall building stands above the trees and, all lit up, provides a pretty skyline to the cool downtown that is Asheville. In the morning, I wake up to the sunlight and the songs of what must be several different kinds of birds, all layered on top of each other, woven together in what would seem to be impossible to duplicate or fashion with musical instruments...indescribably intricate, unworldly, and graceful, songs that can only be of joy and happy things. This must be how people awoke before there was any electricity or annoying sounding alarm clocks. The products I'm working with in the warehouse are quite beautiful. I know that there will be a booth at a show coming up in Cincinnati. I'll try to get a more complete schedule and let you know when one will be in your town. There are leaping frogs, dragonflys, butterflies, ladybugs, praying mantis', frogs on lilypads, spiders on webs, birdbaths with flowered vines woven around the legs, hummingbirds, vines, vines with morning glory flowers, snails, etc...Great for your garden or in the house. It is possible to order directly from the warehouse. If anyone is interested, contact me or call Haw Creek Forge at (828)285-9785. I was able to hook up with Alice Sebrell the other night at an open mic and had a great night, listening to many talented people. I played "Amelia" which seems to really generate a positive response every time I play it. I think alot of people consider it to be one of their favorite songs. So I set up some nice cushions, put them on the lounge chair along with a nice comforter and sleep out under the stars. YES, I'M IN THE INCLOSED LANAI, BUT THIS IS ROUGHING IT FOR ME!!!! Anyway, it was a beautiful night so I bid the dogs and Ed adieu as I ventured my way to the great outdoors by the cement pond. Now for some Joni content: After reading Lindsay's post the other day, I decided to take my Walkman with me and listen to BSN. I still think it is a beautiful album, and Joni lulled me to sleep. I only got as far as ACOY. Okay Victor, here's where we differ :~). It was still before sun up, when the first little creature started it's annoying chirp. Well, that little birdie woke the rest of the little birdies and soon there was the woven orchestra of every type of bird which you spoke of. It drove me frickin nuts. I would rather have been woken up by Ethel Merman. I picked my pillow up, shuffled inside and got into the big cozy bed with only the whirring of the fan to put me back to sleep.
