Details are BBC 1 Wednesday 10th April at 10.35pm. When Hippies ruled the world. The blurb goes: ' Question: Why do shows like this make inteviewees sit in front of a green wall? That aside, this detailed, considered return to the summer of love restores your faith in TV nostalgia fests. Joni Mitchell, author of eco-song prototype Big Yellow Taxi, gives a rare interview, The Doors are widely agreed to be a bit pants and the Muddy joy of Woodstock is relived (sort of). As for a few of my thoughts on #28: <1. The Bully Boys - Woodstock Medley> This one has really grown on me, and I agree with Kakki. It does sound a little Steely Dan-ish (no pun intended Marcus from Denmark) <3. Margret RoadKnight - Marcie> I like this girl's voice. She does an excellent job of Marcie. <5. Morning - For Free: From the 70's, this one sounds like The Association or something...anyway you look at it, it's a version to "Cherish".> Maybe that's why I like this group so much. I *loved* The Association and "Cherish". What happened to The Association? Are they doing Holiday Inns now? <6. Elvis Costello - Edith & The Kingpin> Well, maybe the studio version is better but I think Bob Muller sang this song waaaay better at Jonifest. <8. Gaffers - Court & Spark:> Joni should take these guys to *Court* and let them *Spark* UGGGHHH!!!!! <10. Sandy Stubbert - California:> This is my favorite on the entire CD. I'm a fan of Trisha Yearwood, and I think Sandy sounds somewhat like her. I suppose the "Help Me Rhonda" at the end of the song must be tying in the Beach Boys and "California", but I like it. <13. Loaded Boxers - Big Yellow Taxi> THESE GUYS SHOULD BE SHOT :~) <14. Vocalogy - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Another JMDL exclusive!> Thanks for finding the demo on this Bob! They do sound like Manhattan Transfer. Great cover!!! All in All, another great Covers CD (even if I have to skip tracks 8 and 13 :~) ) Thanks Bob for all your hard work. Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 13:24:50 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: People get ready, there's some questions a-comin' (njc) Hi again, Actually I had four questions: The first two are regarding the (I think) Curtis Mayfield song "Freedom(?) Train" that begins "People get ready/There's a train a comin'/Don't need no ticket/ You just get on board..." First of all, is that the right title? Second of all, for you fellow Laura Nyro fans, did she cover this on C&tBoS? Perhaps I'm confused (what else is new?) -- I haven't see or heard the album in many, many years. There was a lot of train imagery on that album. Particularly devastating was the song "Been On A Train", always gave me chills, and unless I misunderstood it completely, that one was about a friend of hers who died of a drug overdose. Train = drug trip, in Laura's poetic language... The third question is: What's on the new Laura master-tapes album somebody mentioned? I'd go to her site but (as I've mentioned too many times lately) my browser is busted -- something that may get fixed *finally* this weekend). #4: The other thing that caught me off guard was when I was reading about famous people's most memorable moments from TV, in TV Guide's 50th Anniversary Issue, there was Dorthy Hamill talking about seeing the beatles for the first time on Ed Sullivan. Fine and good, but then she says, "...We went out and bought a beatles record the next day, but [emphasis mine] WHEN WE GOT IT HOME WE REALIZED IT WAS THEIR MUSIC BUT IT WASN'T THEM SINGING..." Whuh? This is the first I'd heard of this. I know the *Monkees* were accused (with some reason) of not *playing* much on their earlier albums, and Boyce and Hart and Neil Diamond wrote most of their songs, but they did sing. So maybe Ms. Hamill is confusing the groups *and* the facts? Or is she thinking of Milli Vanilli? :-) Did the Beatles *ever* put out an album on which they themselves didn't sing? If not, perhaps Ms. Hamill did too many triple jumps early in her career... (I have nothing against her, btw) Best to all, Walt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 13:42:02 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni mention on ER Whoops -- this is why i should always read all the digests before asking a question, or mentioning a JM mention -- thanks Janet, for clearing that up -- my only note to myself was "BYT on ER", and when i woke up this morning, I drew a blank. < Subject: Joni on ER Tonight a patient on ER quoted that song that goes, "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone." I've never been one for a Walkman (how ironic) - keep bumping into lamp-posts and misjudging steps on stairs and generally resemble Stan Laurel. Les R sent me a video and CD of the Fest just recently and that got me humming some of the tunes thereof. I'm strolling along and the Mixons' version of BYT came to mind for some reason and I realised I hadn't heard the LOTC version for yonks. One hears so many covers it's sometimes easy to forget what Joni's original sounds like - well maybe not but gimme a break. I must confess to skipping the poppier / played-to-death songs in favour of ... what's the word ... deeper(?) songs; the later works let's say. So I gets back and opens my emails and there's Bob having forwarded the Danish postry: <> Anyway, I put on BYT and though I knew it inside out, it still sounded as fresh as daisy one. So what's yer point WtS? If you played all Joni's albums back to back from STAS to BSN, how long would the running time be? To think that BYT lasts a mere 2mins 16secs and yet it is her ... what's the word ... showpiece(?)! Let's say you were going on a long car journey with people who had never heard any Joni, except BYT (and there's that mental block thing going on therein - oh no that wailing woman!!) but these people were of a "discerning" taste in music and you wanted to compile a selection to introduce Joni. Which songs would you opt for? The reason I ask is that I will be long driving with some friends soon and would like to do away with this myth that BYT epitomises Joni's music. They are the type who shrivel up whenever that wailing woman comes on. Maybe time I got some new friends. We've had HITS and we've had MISSES. I'm gonna combine the titles and call the compilation HISSES (FOR BUMMER SONGS). Maybe just half a dozen Joni songs dotted throughout a compilation tape. I'm thinking along the lines of: Car on the Hill, The Jungle Line (a great one in a car), The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines; driving music. Any thoughts very welcome. Michael, yes, storm to sunup is classic. I had not realized just how much i had missed it all these years it had been away. Gino has the ability to take one deep into a netherworld of emotion, running the gamut from ecstacy to heartache, self-analysis to self-realization. He is not mentioned when the discussion of great songwriters are pronounced but cannot fathom how he can be overlooked; as that or a singer, perfomer, etc. Had to work 66 hours last week and exhausted but when arrived home decided to listen to him for hours. Michael, we could cloister, get appropriately in that state of mind, and drive deep into the Gino experience, for only those who have felt him can understand. "where am I going?" damn, what a tune. Used to listen to the lines asking that question about when I am 35 and wonder myself. Now, at 45, i realize all the time has passed me by but still strong and legs aren't too weak yet. I posted a couple of weeks ago that I did not like jazz and Fred took me to task for it, as he should have and that is the beauty of this list for it teaches me something each day i go to it, but I meant traditional jazz for Gino does delve into jazz often and does it beautifully. It was that sort of thing. Get some band that could sound a lot like the Beatles, put it on the market fast, call it "All the Beatles Lovin' for You" or whatever, and sell it for a $1 or so less than the average LP - that happened a lot then. (She was in Elziabeth as the dying Queen-the other one, not Elizabeth who was played by the brilliant Cate Blanchett). She has appeared in many films and tv programs as well as on stage. the good thing about this country is that talent will see you thru. It certainly is not her looks. She she herself says, she is fuckin' ugly. But a lovely warm up front person who can can act the pants off the pretty women actresees we are used to seeing. She'll never get an Oscar tho cos she is just too ugly. NJC A young man of 33 phoned to day after a puppy. He sounded very nice on the phone. I learned he was a banker, had recently broken up with his fiance, bought a new house. He has bought the puppy her bowls already-in fact just one-a combo for food and water that was shaped like a floppy dog. He sounded very excited and somewhat camp. He duly arrived. A very pleasant looking 'coloured' man(I say coloured becasue he wasn't asian and he wasn't afro caribean or Black and when i asked he said he was amixture of various europeans) ) with a lovely open face and eyes and smile. He was still excitted and showed the blanket he had bought for her. 'would she like the colour?' he asked. He asked if I would tkae him to the Pet Shop and help him choose the right collar and lead. He then asked my opinion about which colour would best match her coat colour. he has called twice already, once to aske me how to clean up puppy pee. Bog roll, I said, soaks it up pretty good. Oh and he also asked if his own Herbal essence shampoo was good for her. Finally, he said he was naming her Jesse. Now was he or wasn't he? If he was, do you think someone should tell him? Seriously, this is a wonderful home for the puppy. I had kept her longer than usual(6 extra weeks) cos only wankers expressed an interest in buying her. There are so many of them about. Most cannot even say Lhasa Apso. Then there are those that wnat a particular colour cos of their carpet. Or those that own a big dog, the gaurding type, who want soemthing small for the children to play with!! Even without the big dog, my answer is still no. - -- bw colin DAK,BRO GC, 950i, 940,860,864,890, 260,Silver 830,860, 580 and 270, Passap 6000, Duo80. colin@tantra-apso.com http://www.tantra-apso.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Apr 2002 01:40:25 +0100 From: colin Subject: Re: Chile NJC Soth america. Tight rockin' band, Paul did lots of solo stuff on acoustic guitar, and had a couple of surprises up his sleeve that truly blew me away, (I don't want to spoil it for anyone with tickets, if you don't want to know, don't scroll down VVVV) RR He performed his tribute to John, "Here Today" from the Tug of War album on acoustic. Then he brought out a ukelele, and said, "you know, George was a great ukelele player, if you went to his house, he would pull out the ukelele, so one time I told him I had worked out this song.." and proceeded to play (and sing) "Something" - --quite lovely. Too many other highlights, "Lady Madonna", 3 songs from the new album, "Hey Jude" singalong with the crowd..."Maybe I'm Amazed"...his voice was as good as 30 years ago and hung in there for the whole 2 1/2 hours....whew...the cat is truly a force of nature. CSNY were playing there 3 days later, but by then I was 175 miles away...(not to mention having spent my allotment) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 22:10:42 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: with all this talk about CSNY now NJC Hi Mags, I can relate to being turned off by the big ticket prices and lousy sound experiences! In my case, I didn't jump until some tickets at work became available at the last minute and I decided to ignore the cost ;-) because I just had to go. My previous experience with them at Staples had been excellent sound-wise and to be frank, this time the sound had some flaws, but the spirit of the boys and the music somehow transcended it. A lawyer I work with was gushing all the next day - has seen them in all combos since the early 70s and said this was the best show he'd ever attended. Anyway, Mags, if you are close by any of the following towns in the near future, you might just get another chance (oh look, there ARE a few possibilities :-) Kakki 4/8/02 8:00PM Pepsi Center Denver, CO 4/10/02 8:00PM Frank Erwin Center Austin, TX 4/11/02 8:00PM Reunion Arena Dallas, TX 4/13/02 8:00PM National Car Rental Center Sunrise, FL 4/14/02 8:00PM Ice Palace Arena Tampa, FL 4/16/02 8:00PM Coliseum Greensboro, NC 4/17/02 8:00PM Philips Arena Atlanta, GA 4/19/02 8:00PM First Union Center Philadelphia, PA 4/20/02 8:00PM Baltimore Arena Baltimore, Maryland 4/22/02 8:00PM Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY 4/25/02 8:00PM United Center Chicago, IL 4/28/02 8:00PM Tacoma Dome Tacoma, WA 4/29/02 8:00PM Rose Garden Portland, OR ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 22:39:08 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: True Confession (njc) With all the different music discussed around here, I'm sure that all of us have at one time or another felt on the outside looking in, either because we don't "get" the particular music/musician being discussed, or maybe have just never heard much or any of it. I have a really big admission to make. For years now, I've listened to people, especially Paz and Fred Simon, rave on in depth about the miracle and genius of Pat Metheny. I've cringed every time, not at all because I don't like Metheny, but because I just wasn't getting or seeing what they were sharing and I've always held Fred's and Michael's musical sensibilities in the highest regard. Why wasn't I connecting on Metheny?? What component was missing in me? ;-) The most wonderful thing happened to me recently. A few weeks ago I was in the car and suddenly a song came on that instantly stunned and overwhelmed me with its beauty. Big time omigawd. Afterward all that was said was "from Pat Metheny's new album." I felt a rush of bliss - oh yes, maybe now I'm on to it! Then today at work, the same thing happened - another song came on and as I listened thought "AHHH...oh, oh, this is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my life - what is this??!" Again, all that was said was "from Pat Metheny's new album." Oh my. I can't even describe it - it's just one of those things that you know when you hear it - like the first time you heard Joni or Laura. It's a new level, a new invention of music. Wow. The new Metheny "Speaking Of Now" is on its way. And thanks to you all who kept telling me ;-) Kakki NP: Buffalo Springfield - various demos from the boxset ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 02:22:13 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: True Confession (njc) In a message dated 4/6/02 2:01:39 AM Eastern Standard Time, KakkiB@worldnet.att.net writes: > I have a really big admission to make. It's funny you should mention Pat. Just happened to stumble across this tonight by pure accident after reading Patrick's post about Baez and realized I'd missed her concert here in NJ. He's playing this week 4/10 at The State Theatre in New Brunswick which is a stone throw away for me. Here's my chance....I hope they're not sold out With their self-titled 1978 debut, the Pat Metheny Group (originally Metheny, Dan Gottlieb, Lyle Mays and Mark Egan) crafted guitar-based jazz-fusion forged from electronic and folk-based structures. Sounds like math class, but it wasn't so complex; Metheny's work, solo and with the group, has always been described with words like moody and atmospheric. At his worst, which isn't often, Metheny grows self-indulgent and unfocused. At his best, usually as part of the "group" or working with legends like Ornette Coleman or Sonny Rollins, Metheny's note choice and placement, along with his expert use of silence, enable his music to appeal to (and often befuddle and disgust, respectively) both the masses and the intelligentsia. The current Pat Metheny group only retains Metheny and keyboardist Mays, but it also adds trumpet, vocals and additional percussion. Look out for rhythmic excursions. -- Andy Fenwick Rose from nj ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #148 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
