Many times it has sounded just as good, but never better. It's also interesting to revisit that album (you are just now discovering it, I first heard it in 1968) and consider that although the standard take on Joni's voice back of that time is the perpetual high vibrato-laden soprano, she actually often dips down pretty far in her range, and it's incredibly beautiful, thick with bittersweetness. I'll go further to say that her music (the actual, specific notes) never sounded better than on STAS (often just as good but never better). Part of it is the "debut album" thing, but mostly it's just that she had already formed a complete musical universe of her own, densely populated with whole galaxies of personal melody and harmony, radiant beyond compare. - -Fred "michael o'malley" writes: >Just reacting to the thinness of Joni content on the list these days... >Believe it or not, I've only now just discovered Joni's first album, Song >to a Seagull, originally releaed in 1968 (Say what??) Please pass it on! (njc) Please forward this to everyone you know -- it's all true! My name is Billy Evans. I am a very sick little boy. My mother is typing this for me, because I can't. She Is crying. The reason she is so sad is because I'm so sick. I was born without a body. It doesn't hurt, except when I try to breathe. The doctors gave me an artificial body. It is a burlap bag filled with leaves. The doctors said that was the best they could do on account of us having no money OR insurance. I would like to have a body transplant, but we need more money. Mommy doesn't work because she said nobody hires crying people. I said, "Don't cry, Mommy," and she hugged my burlap bag. Mommy always gives me hugs, even though she's allergic to burlap and it makes her sneeze and chafes her real bad. I hope you will help me. You can help me if you forward this e-mail to everyone you know. Forward it to people you don't know, too. Dr. Johansen said that for every person you forward this e-mail to, Bill Gates will team up with AOL and send a nickel to NASA. With that funding, NASA will collect prayers from school children all over America and have the astronauts take them up into space so that the angels can hear them better. Then they will come back to earth and go to the Pope, and he will take up a collection in church and send all the money to the doctors. The doctors could help me get better then. Maybe one day I will be able to play baseball. Right now I can only be third base. Every time you forward this letter, the astronauts can take more prayers to the angels and my dream will be closer to coming true. Please help me. Mommy is so sad and I want a body. I don't want my leaves to rot before I turn 10. I try to be happy, but it's hard. I wish I had a kitty. I wish I could hold a kitty. I wish I could hold a kitty that wouldn't chew on me and try to bury Its turds in the leaves of my burlap body. I wish that very much. Thank You, Billy Evans ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 01:35:40 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: CSNY at Staples 4/1/02 (njc) Oh wow, it was quite a night at Staples Center. Packed house, nobody looked a day under 40 but all looked very shining and beautiful. Lots of the aging children arrived hours early and hung out in the great restaurant and bar area. Saw at least two grandmas in their 70s in tie dye. There was such a uplifting spirit of anticipation everywhere. The boys all looked so impossibly youthful, especially Neil, who is very trim and slim, with long locks and cowboy hat, just rockin. Graham was hip-hopping across the stage all night. Stills' energy was endless and amazing. Croz looked hale and hearty and happy. A few new songs, a few transcendent moments and a few surprises. Accompanied by the great Booker T. Jones on organ, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass and Steve Potts on drums. Set list: a rousing Carry On that sequed into Buffalo Springfield's Questions; Nash's Military Madness; I'm Goin On; long version of Wooden Ships; new Stills song - Feed The People; new Neil song - You're My Girl about his daughter growing up that had a strong Booker T backbeat; Nash - I Used to be a King; Southern Man; Southern Cross; Almost Cut My Hair; Cinnamon Girl; Helplessly Hoping; Our House (aka Ode to Joni and the cats) which brought down the house; Old Man; Guinevere; The Lee Shore (omigawd gorgeous); Harvest Moon; Stills on keyboard and the boys channeling blue-eyed playing a Booker T song - Trouble Can't Get Me Down; Nash's awesome Half Your Angels (written after the Oklahoma City bombing and now dedicated to 9/11); an extended Suite Judy Blue Eyes with Stills playing solo guitar that sounded simultaneously like banjo and mandolin on an instrumental interlude; Neil's Let's Roll; Long Time Gone; Neil's Hear No Evil, Feel No Evil (in My Heart); and then Joni fans - the most ROCKIN ROCKIN version of Woodstock I've ever heard - intense, passionate and tearing off the roof with Neil ending it with a few solo notes a la Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner; finishing with Keep On Rockin in the Free World - the house on their feet dancing, clapping and shouting it out. Encore: The most Byrdish version of Eight Miles High I've ever heard them do, with Neil channeling McGuinn's guitar. Throughout the boys were very mellow but energized and the crowd was right with them singing along gently and unobtrusively like a children's choir on almost every song. I recently read Croz's lament about no one wanting to hear them anymore, how the music biz wants the Britneys, etc. Well, listen here Mr. Crosby, I don't think Britney is going to see the same crowd of shining faces 17,000 strong, ditching work early and fighting traffic to want to be nowhere else than seeing her and singing along to her every song by heart 35 years from now. You are the classics and will ever be. And we will be always be there as long as you are playing. ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Apr 2002 08:13:04 -0500 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Song to a Seagull 1968 In a message dated Tue, 2 Apr 2002 4:21:00 AM Eastern Standard Time, FredNow writes: > although the standard take on Joni's > voice back of that time is the perpetual high vibrato-laden soprano, she > actually often dips down pretty far in her range, and it's > incredibly > beautiful, thick with bittersweetness. This was also the first thing to hit me...I too was late in coming to STAS, I had heard Night In The City on the radio, and that was about it. I remember buying it (after joining this list) and listening to I Had A King, and being amazed at the way she sang "Brown", so much lower than anything she sang on Clouds, which I had had for a long time. The other thing that gnawed at me was that even though I had never heard I Had A King (or a cover of it), the melody was strangely familiar. It took me a bit to realize that what I had heard was the sampled melody in PM Dawn's song "The Ways of the Wind". Yes, STAS is an amazing debut...certainly not without flaw, but outstanding nonetheless. While I accept that she isn't as consistent as she once was, Joan's melodies and chord progressions can still be brilliant and unusual - "Two Grey Rooms", "Harlem in Havana", "Sire of Sorrow" - these are just a few of the songs that match her famed 70s output. And lets not forget the controversial DED album, which, as those of us who listen to the music and not the production can testify, contains some of the best tunes of Joni's career... "The street was loud/from an angry crowd/ and I thought of you/I thought of you dreamer..." I know these as two titles for the same song, the one with the refrain "Will ye go, lassie, go, and we'll all go together, to pick wild mountain thyme, all around the purple [or "bloomin' "?] heather. Will ye go, lassie, go?" -- one title being associated with the Scots, and the other with the Irish, tho' I don't remember which goes with which -- and the song as traditional, which could equate to "unknown," but a number on the same list are credited as "tradicional" (I need not translate!). I notices some mention of Culver City and decided to add a bit: Haven't been to Culver City myself, but my partner's dad is a city planner there. More interesting is the Museum of Jurasic Technology, which is one of the most original and fascinating places I've ever heard of (has anyone been there?) > I know nothing about Culver City -only that it is in LA and that is where my ex > came from. So what is it? is it gang infested or something? Culver City was originally a typically sleepy SoCal working-middle class town that grew around the former (now Sony) MGM studios and Howard Hughes' Aircraft Company. Judy Garland grew up there as a child and I think Marilyn Monroe, also. It's not particularly glamourous or interesting compared to say, Beverly Hills or Hollywood or Malibu, but it has become a bit more upscale in recent years because land is so tight in the city and it offers close proximity to a lot of the LA business (Sony Entertainment) and recreation (the beach and Marina) hubs.
