Gus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 05:04:49 -0800 From: Julius Raymond Subject: Re: The Last Waltz" Thanks, David. A little more info here: Rhino Leads The Band Through One 'Last Waltz' (Billboard.com, 3/11/02) Rhino Records, United Artists, and MGM Home Entertainment have teamed for a variety of projects to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the final concert by the original incarnation of the Band, later released as an album and a film under the name "The Last Waltz." United Artists is re-releasing the Martin Scorsese-directed film for a limited theatrical run beginning April 5, while Rhino will issue a four-CD boxed set version of the album on April 16. A special edition DVD from MGM arrives May 7. The five-hour show, held on Thanksgiving Day at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco, found the Band's Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel backed by a dazzling array of guests, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Emmylou Harris, and Van Morrison. The original 30-track album documenting the show was released by Warner Bros. in 1978. The new boxed set, supervised and remastered by Robertson, tacks on 24 more tracks from the concert and rehearsals. Among them are Band performances with Mitchell, Clapton, Dylan, and Young; Robertson's demo for "The Last Waltz" theme; two previously unreleased jams; and more. Robertson also wrote the introduction for the 80-page CD booklet, which features rare photos and memorabilia. Beyond digital transfers and sound mixes, MGM's special-edition DVD sports a featurette with interviews of Robertson and Scorsese, plus the latter's original storyboards. A previously unseen "jam footage" series features the Band with such guests as Young, Clapton, Starr, Stephen Stills, Ron Wood, and Dr. John. Robertson and Scorsese also offer a shot-by-shot commentary track, while Helm, Hudson, and various other participating musicians and crew members supply a second commentary of their own. The film returns to theaters April 5 in San Francisco, and will also open in New York (April 10), Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Toronto (April 19). Robertson also supervised a digital remix of the soundtrack, which will be heard for the first time in Dolby 5.1 stereo sound. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.David Sapp" To: "joni list" Sent: Monday, March 11, 2002 8:02 AM Subject: The Last Waltz" > there should be some joni tunes on this: > > THE BAND CELEBRATE "WALTZ"'S BIRTHDAY > > The BAND's "The Last Waltz" will be released as a four-CD box set on April > 16th, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the landmark concert and film. > The box set, overseen by Band guitarist ROBBIE ROBERTSON, includes the > original soundtrack's thirty songs, as well as twenty-four unreleased tracks, > including a rehearsal with VAN MORRISON. If there is no "NJC" in the header field, the message WILL go to Only-Joni, regardless of content. For instance, YOUR message has no Joni content, but since you did not enter the letters NJC in the subject line, it will go to everyone. My response has added the letters in the subject, so the Only-Joni people will not see it. If you are in fact getting messages that have NJC in the subject line, you should let Les know. A small working class home. Kind of like one that I lived in when growing up. The concert was so small I think I only invited one or two friends. It wasn't my house. She may have been performing alone, I don't know. . .there was no equipment set up or anything. People were coming in and it was raining out. Everyone was bringing in water. . . it was all over the linoleum kitchen floor. Joni and I were sitting at the kitchen table. At first I had nothing to say, too scared. No one was bombarding her or anything. We were just sitting and watching people bring puddles of water in. Before you know it, the kitchen floor was one big puddle. There were kids around and I think one of them was crawling. I said to joni "we should really get this water up." I don't remember Joni's response or if she even had one. . . so I found a spaghetti mop (the kind I use). It was worn and it had been missing half of its spaghetti! So it was like I was using half of a mop. I absorb the water methodically and squeeze out the mop each time in the bathtub. The bathtub is now filled with water, the water is clean. This all takes me a while. I go back to sitting with Joni. We start talking. I am no longer scared for some reason. We are again watching people arrive, everyone is comfortable with one another. Joni and I start making philosophical jokes about the people arriving as we observe them. Even though we are joking about the people coming in, we are in no way insulting them. We are gently commenting and laughing. It is a loving atmosphere (with the people). Joni leans into me, she leans her head into mine, and puts her hand on mine, in a loving friendship way. Her hand is big (and of course, accomplished). That's it. Dreams are so real. . . sometimes I think they could be an alternative reality. Really. Was anybody else at this house concert? :) Hey, you never know. NP: bugs in my house that I can't seem to get rid of. Ladybugs and Box Elder bugs. :) :) :) Marianne _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 12:25:11 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Julia Fordham and India Arie (NJC) Wowee Joseph - this is wonderful news! Ice chests are packed with wine and beer. The little woman (little pun) is in the kitchen preparing yummy delights. Candles are out. Tiki torches are in the yard where Kakki once sat as regal as Miss Scarlett in here day. The phone has not stopped all day with people ringing up to confirm they are coming (better start building the east wing, these things are getting to large). A few listers have checked in and are also arriving. I am so blessed and am very happy in nervous anticipation of the night ahead. I wish you ALL could be here.
