Subject: Rufus Wainwright in concert (NJC) Hey all... Just returned from a fantastic experience: Rufus Wainwright in concert. A really funny and talented guy. For a swishy fella, he has a surprisingly rabid following of young women. Teddy Thompson was the opening act and was an absolute treat. Teddy is a member of Rufus' touring band so he came back all of fifteen minutes after his set ended. Also, I literally bumped into Rufus' dad, Loudon, in the lobby. And Rufus' sister, Martha sings backup. She's great, too. Definite highlight was Teddy, Martha, and Rufus trading verses on the senior Wainwright's "One Man Guy." As Rufus is so fond of saying, "Fabulous!." Of course, nothing topped the set closer. Rufus and Martha were joined by Loudon and mother Kate McGarrigle for a stunning version of "What'll I Do." Wow. Wow. Did I say "wow" already? Anyhow, if you know anything of Rufus and like what you've heard, check him out. On more than one occasion, I found myself thinking that Joni herself would approve-even with all of her high standards intact. If that doesn't sell it, I don't know what would. Anyhow, that's all. Hope everyone's feeling good. I sure am. - -J _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2002 09:34:17 +0100 From: "Marian" Subject: Messianen organ works? I am not personally familiar with the works of Messianen, but apparently he used bird songs as inspiration for his music. I think it would be very interesting, not only because of that, but also because it is so rare to get an opportunity to be able to hear the complete works of any artist in one go. Please go and let us know what it was like! I wish I could go, too!!! Man, can that chick party or what? ;~) Anyway, I'm very happy to announce the winners of Covers #27. My song was "Black Crow", and I had a two-way tie between Donna "The Texas Tush" Binkley, who guessed "Song For Sharon" & Steve Harper, who's also a great pal that I saw Joni with in 2000 and he guessed "Blue Motel Room". So between the two, they had the poor crow surrounded! So congrats to youse guys...the only thing better than giving away one free copy is giving away two! :~) Steve & Donna, send me your addresses and I'll turn these CD's over to the USPS. If you didn't win, and still want what's coming to you, e-mail me and we'll hook you up with a copy. And plenty more covers around the bend, so stay tuned, and thanks again to everyone who gave it a shot. A Boho: An artist of any medium caught in the fragile dance between coruption and truth. Should I sing for the roses....or play real good for free? Should I waste away in my masion in Malibu or Hejira myself out of here and run like a white ass deer? Seeing that Joni seems to be fascinated with the twisted dualities that any up and coming artist would face, it seems only natural that the Painted Word would move her so much. Read the book! As an Art History major it burst alot of my bubbles. I like to think it did something similar to Joni :) I am interested in the notion of inspiration, where does it come from, what motivates art at the core, the book shed a new light on that for me. Hope this helped a bit. Picture it, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, on a dreich Thursday afternoon. The perkiest wind is carrying the hail sideways the length of the busiest shopping thoroughfare in the city. By Marks & Spencers, I am standing on a noisy corner with a clapped out guitar hanging from my shoulders and looking down somewhat forlornly at an up-turned baseball cap with a sorry scattering of brown coins strewn therein. My hands are seizing up. It's bloody chilly Willy. So I keep the busking songs a-coming real quick-fire. Nobody stops to hear me even though I'm playing so sweet and high. What to do Baba? I know, I'll retune for a quick rendition of Crazy Cries. That'll get their hands delving into their pockets. Three minutes later, while attempting C77235, the cold has no sympathy for the stretching strings and scheckt ... there goes my G string. Minutes pass as do the scurrying Glaswegians. Ok, the Crazy Cries. Lovely. Attention at last. The clinking of a few more brown coins. "Another one like that," shouts a man of some commendable taste. "Aye, just let me retune." D57543 this time. I look up and the faces have changed. Where's my man of commendable taste? You get my point - three minutes of my dulcet tones stretched to eight if I sing the chorus several times, then the same in silence whilst I retune. Time is money. How many pennies does it take to get to the JoniFest and back? 55545 - going for a song. Is there really a danger here, is there an important EU vote coming up? How serious is the threat? For what it's worth, I have to take thousands of dollars worth of antiviral prescriptions to stay alive (lucky me that I live where I do, and the government covers much of the cost -- and unlucky the many in other parts of the word who die because they have no access or can't afford it); but I also take vitamins and minerals and such, and would be pissed off if I weren't allowed, or if they became even more expensive than they already are, and I had to stop buying them. She's one of my favorite actresses, though. I thought she was good in all of the "Alien" Movies, even the two later, disappointing ones; and very good in Ang Lee's all-English-language debut, a small but powerful film called "The Ice Storm." It's set in Connecticut (I'm originally from nearby Rhode Island), and it's ***very disturbing*** -- but she and Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire -- all of the actors are achingly good, but the movie may make you weep -- it did me -- and gave me nightmares. Not for the weak of heart or stomach. But what a movie. [Speaking of disturbing, I had to leave the computer for a few seconds to set up the VCR to record "The Laramie Project", about the murder of young gay Matthew Shepard in Wyoming a few years ago -- it's on HBO, and I'm preparing for a good cry.] In any case, getting back to Sigourney -- she's best at a certain type of intensity. I'm trying to think fo another actress like her. To a certain extant, Maura Tierney, who's the best thing since sliced bread in my book. She was wonderful on NewsRadio (an American TV sitcom, good enough to be imported, but I don't know if it is), but she's getting more attention right now on E.R., which I imagine you folks *must* get in the UK (she's the troubled nurse, who started as a medical student, her mother is occasionally played by Sally Field, etc.). Like Sigourney, Maura T. acts with her eyes, and can generate three emotions at once when's she at full blast. Neither is the kind of woman you want pissed off at you. Whoa! There's a much-discussed film called "Kissing Jessica Stein", in which two young women, extremely tired of their shitty luck with men, decide to try out same-sex love. At the end of the movie, there's a quick fast-forward to three months later, at which time the two young women are "still in love", but one of them decides she doesn't want to have sex with the other and goes back to her boyfriend(!), and the other moves on to other women. This pisses some people off, as does Anne Heche's behavior (and some of the press's snide remarks about same). For what it's worth, I think Anne Heche is a fair actress but a bona fide nutcase, and not a role model for *anyone*. :-) *But* I know three people -- and I mean I know them well, two of them for nearly 30 years, and the other for about 20 -- whose sexuality *is* fluid. I knew a fourth, one of my lovers, in fact, but he passed away. And I've known many other people fairly well who were fluid in one way or another. Ultimately, my take is that most people's sexuality is *not* fluid -- most people are gay or straight -- but to deny that some people may flow from one sexuality to another is to deny the facts. By the same token, I've known some people who've said "oh, well, *all* people are basically bisexual" -- I think that's hokum, too. And for the vast majority of us for whom sexuality is fixed -- to think that we *can* change (for whatever reason, religious dogma or otherwise) is folly. Live and let live, I say, and I wish all people would say, and move on. It astonishes me that even here, this issue needs to be debated, still! "I'm different from you -- isn't that great!" -- or at least, "Who cares?" I know that's easy for me to say, Mack -- I live here and you live there.
