Truly there are so many great artists out there touring, recording etc but they are independent or on smaller lables. Listen to folk radio, go to folk alliance conferences, summer music festivals, your local music venue that caters to quality artists, etc...they are just not on major labels anymore. Like Ann said, its not about lyrics or intelligence anymore...In my opinion the majors are about what sells & what sells is sex & violence. But truly, there are sooooo many very very talented, players, singers, songwriters out there that are not getting bolstered by the star making machinery dollars. We, as music lovers have to seek them out because believe me there are many incredible artists out there... ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 00:39:50 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: New job offer!(njc) New job offer!(njc) >>Just got offered a job in Asheville, NC with Haw Creek Forge.<< Sounds great, Asheville sounds great...go for it! ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 03:36:17 -0500 From: les@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: March 2 On March 2 in Joni Mitchell History: 1972: Joni performs at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia 1996: Joni receives Canadian Television's GEMINI AWARD for Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program or Series for her appearance on MuchMusic's Intimate & Interactive Special. - ------------------------ Search the "Today" database at http://www.jmdl.com/today ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 03:36:17 -0500 From: les@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Articles: March 2 On March 2 the following article was published: 1978: "Joni Mitchell Meets Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" - Circus (Review - Album) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/780302c.cfm - ------------------------ http://www.jmdl.com/articles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 00:51:18 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Debut albums NJC Did anyone mention Steady On, Shawn Colvin? ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 05:46:32 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Today's Articles: March 2 what an interesting article to read in hindsight!!!! there's a reference i couldn't get, though: '''Dreamland,' Joni's gem-like contribution to Roger McGuinn's 1976 Cardiff Rose LP.'' what is this? wally - -----Mensaje original----- De: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]En nombre de les@jmdl.com Enviado el: Sabado, 02 de Marzo de 2002 05:36 a.m. Para: joni@smoe.org Asunto: Today's Articles: March 2 On March 2 the following article was published: 1978: "Joni Mitchell Meets Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" - Circus (Review - Album) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/780302c.cfm - ------------------------ http://www.jmdl.com/articles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 05:47:45 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Debut albums NJC ''reading, writing and arithmetic'' by the sundays. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 19:28:12 +0800 (PHT) From: Subject: Re: NJC In The Bedroom I highly recommend this film. Heartbreaking and harrowing. I lost two sisters in separate accidents and the pain can be really excruciating especially when one is growing up and there's just no etiquette or rules to follow when grieving and mourning. I remembered being quite affected by the death of my sister in 1985 and although our family was quite stiff-upper- lip about showing emotions in public and to each other, I can quite understand now how we probably grieved individually and put up a brave front everytime during those years. After watching this movie, I realized one aspect about mourning that I didn't pay much attention before -- my parents' own grief at losing their children. I never saw them cry (my mother did twice) publicly but I wonder how particularly excruciating it must have been for them. They have to mourn for the loss of a baby they saw grow and bloom before their eyes, and having to display a brave front in front of their kids. IN THE BEDROOM is a great film. Its a non-bravura, non-showy type of film that located the heart of sadness that comes from tragedy so very well. Made me remember the equally-good UNDER THE SAND with Charlotte Rampling. Sissy Spacek might win an Oscar for this one, and I would be glad for her having followed her movies ever since I watched her in `NIGHT, MOTHER with Anne Bancroft. But the one who stole the show for me was Tom Wilkinson. The music is great. My favorite song is "Lucky Girl" - a somewhat ironic piece considering her later divorce. I just noticed recently that in "Dog Eat Dog" someone (Klein?) is saying real low and in the background "dog eat dog" through the whole tune - sort of like in a cartoon dog voice - never noticed that before! I saw OP in Philadelphia that year (maybe...93 or 94?) and they were really great live, too. "Bury My Lovely" was the first single (I think). The songs did tend to run together and all sound similar...but I liked the sound so it didn't really matter. It was one of those albums (does anyone else have these?) that I loved, but couldn't listen to it all the way through in one sitting. By track 8 or 9 I would be thinking "Oh my GOD turn it off...I can't stand it anymore!" Weird. Never heard much of the second album. They had a nice sound with really beautiful vocals, lush arrangements, short melodic love songs...they did tend to sound alot alike but they were good songs, I liked the general sound they were getting and it was definately an impressive debut even if it sounded somewhat crafted. I suppose though, ultimately they weren't able to really go anywhere with it as their second album was much worse, sounding like a rehashed version of the prior one. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 9:37:50 -0800 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: RE: House Concerts 101NJC) > Can anyone tell me more about house concerts- what they are, etc.? Thanks! > House concerts have become popular over the last several years and have established themselves as a viable venue for acoustic music, an nice alternative to the bar scene. They are particularly common in the northeast though you will find them in virtually every state these days, some have become very successful, and you will find many national acts like Darryl Purpose, David and Tracy Grammar, and lesser known acts as well playing house concerts. Here is the basic gist of a houseconcert. The host, or hostess, decides to have a house concert featuring a particular performer, or even a couple of different performers. She will then send out word to all her friends and associates that there will be a house concert on such and such a date with so and so. In some cases, this may be advertised in a local paper, on a website, sent out to a mailing list, etc... Though the proccess differs slightly from venue to venue, usually there is a requested donation, around $10, that is collected the night of the show. I think it is done this way to avoid any legal hassles with charging ticket prices for a public event(a venue in Georgia recently dealt with this very issue) and also, its much nicer and meangingful to think that you're making a donation which is really part of the whole point of the house concerts. Generally all the money donated goes directly to the artist(s) and the host does not profit from the performance. So there is no money paid in advance however, it is very common for reservations to be made as these are small, intimate venues and can tend to fill up rather quickly. Most houses will have a limited number of seats(they vary greatly in size, some house concerts have become quite large) anywhere from 30 to 40 or 50 people. I think the reservations are helpful as it allows you to know how many people to plan for and some very successful venues, they will fill up rather quickly. Generally, house concerts are done acoustically, with no equipment, as they are intended to be an intimate affair, and this makes them rather intimate and personal, something you will not find in a bar or large venue. The hostess will usually provide some form of refreshments and perhaps ask some friends to contribute some as well, brownies, chips, etc...There may be a couple of bottles of wine, though my impression is the house concerts are an alternative to the bar scene so alcholic consumption is rather minimal if any, and not the focus of the evening. There may be a donation basket set up to assist with food costs though that is the perogative of the hostess. People will usually be asked to show up at least a half hour beforehand, to allow everyone to be seated for the beginning of the show, allow some mingling and refreshments, etc...so when the show starts the focus will be on the artist. Generally there is no smoking allowed at these things, and the whole idea I think is to create a really nice atmosphere in which to have a performance. At one coffeehouse, that featured Kate Bennett, Jeff Bisch, and myself, we had a friend come and make eggplant pizza earlier that afternoon, so there was actually some dinner type food though that is probably more the exception rather than the rule. When it comes to having a house concert though, the possibilities are wide open and it is something that you create. There are no rules really and you are only limited by your imagination. It might be nice to have some candles set up to create a pleasant mood, etc... I know that there are some websites set up that deal specifically with house concerts and there is even a house concert database. I hope this gives you a good idea of what house concerts are and let me know if you have any further questions. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 10:45:31 EST From: Reuben3rd@aol.com Subject: Re: ladies NJC This reminded me... Once a few years ago my younger sister and I were in Manhattan shopping. As we entered a department store a woman fell in to step with us, and when we got to the door, I opened it and stepped aside to let her (and my sister in). I can't help it...it was ingrained from an early age that you open the door for a woman if the situation presents itself. The woman tore into me with a fury and told me that she was capable of doing it by herself, and that I shouldn't assume that she wanted me to open the door for her, etc. etc. She was quite rude. I was shocked, and didn't respond immediately, and my sister stepped up and pulled the door handle away from her and sort of pushed me into the store, calling over her shoulder: "Excuse my brother, ma'am. He thought you were a lady." Very funny episode. It's a trend that seemed to start in the 1980s, when high-tech glitz started taking over these sorts of televised entertainments. Are they the children of invited guests who are REALLY REALLY excited by every lighting change that hits the stage or every cheap celebrity who mounts the podium? Or are they hired screamers--thirteen-year-old girls who belong to some sort of talent agency that specializes in renting out crowds for events. Do they take lessons in scream production? Are they paid per hour or per event? Are they paid by the artists' management to scream for their clients? (During the opening credits the biggest screams were for the newer artists; the scream level would go way down for anyone whose career peaked two years ago.) Are these screamers so knowledgeable about music that they have a shriek scale: a 10 for N Sync, a 2 for (well, Joni, if she were to show up)? I notice these screamers on TV shows that don't even have much built-in excitement: "Rock n Roll Jeopardy," for instance. What is there about Jeff Probst that would make one tear one's vocal cords? Just wondering. You can go back to what you were doing now. What I am saying is that the majority of humans are not interested in preservation, justice, humainity, fairness, grace, and overall real, true natural beauty. For example, many would prefer the bang of fireworks or a car racing around a track, etc. to a beautiful sky, a work of art, a starry night, a drop of rain on a sunny day, a flower, or seeing four deer playing free in the yard. I have the Alicia Keys CD and love it, not as much as Joni but I think she has talent and stands out from most other carbon copied MTV midriff girlies.....anyway, I just think that music is way too subjective to be judged in this manner, call me a cynic but 99,9% of the heavy hitter awards : Best Album, Best new Artist etc..... all have videos on MTV, they are products of marketing research. To me Joni is a once in a lifetime miracle of creative genius and what makes her extra wonderful is that the tiger can't tame her. In 1969 was the award about how much $$$ you could make the producers??? That's what the Grammys seem like to me these days. Steve's concert website is http://www.thelivingtradition.org/tltbodyconcerts.html i haven't read your intial question or victor's reply cuz i'm on digest....but i think you are asking about hosting a house concert? they range in size according to the amount of people they can accomodate...the one i played (russ & julie's) has been going on for several years & is pretty well known around the country...last year one of the LA tv stations did a spot on their concert...& the night we played a guy from npr was their interviewing everyone & recording...don't know if or when anything will be broadcast... at any rate its a huge & growing thing...the best thing going for both musicians (who get listened to & paid decently) & the audience who gets an intimate show & to hang out with the musicians afterwards... here is a photo that shows you the performer space http://www.jrp-graphics.com/houseconcerts/concert45.html & you can also read lots of info there about their experiences in hosting & the guests that they have had (some of them quite well known...it was an honor to join that list as we were probably one of the least well known but that is what is so cool...the audience comes to hear new artists as well as the better known ones) here is their links to other press about houseconcerts http://www.jrp-graphics.com/houseconcerts/press.html russ & julie really have the whole process down (& a waiting list to play there which is years long!)...they can host between 80 & 100 plus folks...they used to rent, but eventually bought, folding chairs...they move all furniture out of their living room the day of the show (with help from friends & family) & the artist plays in space in the front of the room (& supplies their own pa or just does without)...there is a stairs & a balcony at the back which can accomodate the overflow if their aren't enough seats...i am not good with square footage but the key is being able to move furniture out & set up chairs... everyone can bring desserts, snacks, drinks, russ & julie also supply coffee, teas, soda, some desserts...there is an intermission break when everyone can mingle & eat & drink, etc. they were also kind enough to feed us all before the show! great soup & homemade bread... they said they don't make money, actually often loose money but they do it for the love of music & getting to host & know musicians...their kids have grown up with these events so its been wonderful for their kids too...they do these once a month & now sometimes are able to get local businesses to sponsor a show which helps defray the costs & the sponsors get two front row seats...after years of doing this they have a mailing list of 500 people...they send out emails, flyers, press releases, etc. they give all the door money to the musicians, they used to charge $10 but recently raised it to $15... we hosted a house concert once for around 30 people...rented the chairs & moved out some furniture...victor & holley hosted one that we played at the was really lovely too... i have looked into a couple of houseconcerts in the austin but they want to hear me play live first before they will book me, which is fair... i have probably answered more than you wanted to know! kate, feeling yucky cuz we have no water, waiting for the plumber to come fix our broken water pipes (of COURSE it breaks on the weekend!) ******************************************* Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** -----Original Message----- From: AsharaJM@aol.com [mailto:AsharaJM@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, March 02, 2002 8:06 AM To: waytoblu@mindspring.com; joni@smoe.org; kate@katebennett.com Subject: Re: House Concerts 101NJC) WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Victor, thank you VERY much!! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. I went to the web, and found a LOT of info!! Silly me, I thought this was such a grass-roots thing, I wouldn't find it on the web. Instead, I found a plethora of information, and even a website from people that had hosted our own Kate Bennett this past month!! Kate: how big was their space in their house? That's the only thing I am a little nervous about- stuffing in enough people to make it worthwhile for the performer. There are still beds left, and some new accomodations have been added, as well as the option of a day pass. Check it all out at: www.jmdl.com/Jonfest2002. You can see all the information without registering for the Fest. Check out the Information page and the Question and Answer page for all the detailed information!! Even if you are not planning on attending, you can join in the fun by (and greatly help to keep jmdl.com up and running!) and receive a special Jonfest giveaway by making a donation to Les Irvin for the JMDL. The time you have spent here in good company warrants a donation of some sort, don't you think? Make checks payable to: "Les Irvin" and send to: Ashara Productions, LLC 40 Parsonage Lane Topsfield, MA 01983 Donations for the giveaways and raffle items can also be sent to this address. If you are not sure what kinds of things we are looking for, how about a Joni momento, a CD that you have put out, (Victor? Gregg? Kate? David Lahm? Christene? Jenny? Anne? Bryan?) a Joni songbook, t-shirt, poster, video, book, picture, etc. If you'd like to donate something, but aren't sure what to give, you can always go to e-bay, do a search for Joni Mitchell, and perhaps get something not too pricey. The giveaways and raffle make it much more festive, and also helps to raise money for the JMDL website. Just for fun, I went through to see how far we are spanning the globe this year. Believe it or not, this Jonifest represents 21 States, 9 countries, and 5 Continents so far!!!! If one has the space, I highly recommend hosting a house concert, or series of house concerts on a theme. It's rewarding for the artists and hosts alike. I started doing house concerts way back in the early 1980s at my place in Long Beach. We had a large deck in the backyard and hosted events for about thirty people during the summer - we even had Melissa Etheridge one night when she was comparably unknown. She did an all acoustic performance, which I wish she would do more, but that's not what made her famous, now is it? You just never know who may start in your own back yard! The method I use. Invite friends, family, neighbors till you are full up, charging $15 each which includes a simple supper (usually a food for the masses: chili, soups, salads, or pasta) and soft drinks, coffee, tea. One trick I learned -- don't buy bottled water -- instead place a large bottled water cooler (3-5 gallons) in the food vicinity, you save a lot of money. People were welcome to bring their own wine (Hollywood Bowl style), I supplied openers, plastic glasses, etc. We would start on a Saturday evening at 6:30PM, with food, then the artist(s) would begin performing at 8:00, break at 9:00 (cookies, etc. served) wrapping up at 10:00 or so. It's really not that expensive - I could throw one for about $75, which if you consider the cost of attending a show out with dinner for two, you can easily exceed that amount. I'd pay that - the contributions go to the artists. I'd do one a month in May, June, July, August, and September. It usually gets to the point that "advertising" isn't necessary - they just fill-up on their own. Brad and I haven't hosted a house concert in the last three years or so. I really like doing them outdoors in the summertime and we got out of the loop when we renovated our back yard. We always intended to resume, but time gets away. You all have gotten me motivated again and summer is coming! I almost didn't know it was her!) which talks about the upcoming Joni documentary. In their Hear & Now section on p. 72, "Blue Movie -- After setting her last three feature films in a musical milieu, Allison Anders (Grace of My Heart) is making a documentary about -- surprise -- a musician: Joni Mitchell. Anders is shooting the recording sessions for Mitchell's next album, which finds the singer revisiting vintage originals like "Circle Game" with the London Symphony Orchestra -- and pairing with "day players" like Ry Cooder, Wayne Shorter, Billy Preston, Herbie Hancock, and (tentatively) Neil Young. "Some of it is material she did as a young girl, with a soprano voice and an acoustic guitar, now with an orchestra and an alto," says Anders. "It's so interesting to hear these same songs with wisdom. Not that she wasn't wise before, but it's like 'I thought I was on to something then, and now I *know* I am.'" I am a week behind, but I just clicked on a digest and saw a little Grammy talk, and had to weigh in (I hope this hasn't been beaten to death or posted already). First, I missed the first half, but the part I did see -- whoa, mama! I have sadly come to the conclusion that I am.... old. Yes, old. I just don't get it. Now I know what my parents thought when I was having this freak-out about seeing the Human League 20 years ago on the Grammys, and what anyone over 18 was thinking back when I was freaking out over all the 80's shit that I still love so much. I just ain't buying it with these people and their little dance routines. Alicia Keys, well, I've always dug her, in part because (don't freak out) Fallen always has somehow, and I don't know why, reminded me of Sam Philips' "Stop" (can't explain why), and I love both songs. So, when she sang I was into it, and then boom, she starts doing this tango thing, and I am lying there saying "WTF is this shit?" and the evening went downhill from there. And I am sorry, proud Canadian that I am, but I would love to just kick lil' Nellie in the arse because she is so annoying and full of herself (but I do love that "Turn out the Lights" song). Ugh, she's annoying as all hell. And then, to top it all off, Dylan comes on, and OMG, I am so sorry, but what the hell was that? Might as well have been singing Chinese folk songs backwards for all I could understand... Good Lord, nobody can make fun of my love for industrial music ever again who liked that....Bring back Soybomb! And I *was* liking Outkast until that performance... what the hell was that? Ok, there, I've done my old person bitching... ahhhh... gotta get back to bed, I need a mustard plaster for the rheumatize.... ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #100 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
