Upon closer examination of the lyrics, the song was about a lazy day with thoughts ranging from food to missing someone, then: "... Joni Mitchell is on the radio.." This song reminds me so much of Suzanne Vega's "Tom Diner" where the character reminisced her lover while detailing all the movements of people around her: an objective correlative to her feelings. Haven't heard yet of Espen Lind but when I listened to all the songs in his latest, there's nothing to motivate me to buy it. Maybe except for that very brief Joni reference. I am not an expert in this - just have some general working knowledge over the years. In the case of regular radio broadcasts, I understand that ASCAP/BMI figures out royalties on a kind of averaging system of how many times a song was played, in how many markets, size of market, etc. I've also heard that they pick various markets across the country at random to monitor to get an overall average. Even though it is not precise I think they derive the average based on statistics and information reported by the broadcaster. Like you said, there is electronic monitoring of regular radio stations and there is also information which is required to be reported regarding the average of how many listeners tune into a particular radio station/market share, etc. It seems like these regulations which have proposed to apply to the internet/digital broadcasters seek a way to obtain the same kinds of data as is reported/monitored by the radio broadcasters. How else can ASCAP/BMI determine the average amount of play for a particular song, number of listeners/market share of the internet, etc. broadcasters in order to properly track the royalties due? You indicate that there is a way to track most of the data required through use of the "bot" software. (I have no knowledge about "bot" but it sounds like a monitoring tool). I think the "listener log" aspect sounds very invasive, but again it seems they are trying to determine a way to measure the amount of listeners tuning in. Perhaps the requirements they are proposing to derive the required data are far more draconian than that required of the radio broadcasters. The proposal does invite comments regarding the burdensomeness of the new requirements. Maybe the internet broadcasters (if they haven't already) need to band together and establish their own advocacy group/lobby (and get some good lawyers to help them!). The intention of the proposed regulations is to protect the copyright holders, but it sounds like the copyright office definitely needs more input from those most affected, rather than the RIAA. By the way, wasn't it the original purpose of the RIAA to protect artists? Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 23:40:57 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: RAP, racism & hip hop culture njc Your prof. is right. It's huge. As you may or may not know Hip Hop is really big in this neck of the woods. Cash Money Records is based here and Master P is from here and is based out of Baton Rouge now. (all kinds of Rap stuff but also some artists in the Hip Hop vein) I find that it crosses over racial lines with the greatest of ease. I worked a hip hop show here in Hammond, La. And the artist were from the Cash Money label (many of the people I have worked with before) and the audience were predominantly white (with tons of Latinos and Hispanic people as well). Probably 70-30 white to black in the audience and all black artists. These kids walked the walk and talked the talk as well as knew this music inside out and were as loud as the PA system singing along. What is a mind blower for me is how the suburban kids like mine that go to private school get into the whole culture as deep as they do. They like all kinds of music including Joni Mitchell and Beatles, but there drug of choice right now is rap and hip hop and r and b. Mikey even asked if he could buy some jewelry like the Cash Money boys. Julian knows the lyrics to so much of the stuff on the radio and both he and Mikey listen to so many of these artists. We were at a bike shop picking out a new ride for Mikey and a rap record came on the radio inside the shop. Julian pointed out to the salesman that the song was by Juve (short for Juvenile). The salesman was very impressed and wanted to know how old Julian was (4). It's encouraging to me that the kids seem to be color blind regarding the music. I guess that's the way it was for me at first cause I don't remember being into the lyrics so much as just the sound a nd feel of it. Growing up in Motown and being surrounded by the sweet soul music of the day was a blessing for me. It's all good with me but I have to admit that I find rap and hip hop music tedious and boring (kinda like disco is for me). I have had some amazing folks on the TV show (like the Ghetto Twinz, Mystical, Fiend, Juvenile, Mia X, and many others) who's lyrics I find really provocative and compelling, but I get bored with the beats. Mikey says that's what he likes the best. All of a sudden I feel like my father (only maybe NOT as bad). Mikey and Julian even dig the old disco stuff mostly because there mom loves that era and they all start dancing around are transformed into little Gloria Gaynors, Bee Gees, and KC's. AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Give me a stiff martini with some Joni back. Just some of my opinions and observations. Peace Michael P.S. I meant to comment some more on the culture and was gonna tell you of all the hip hop arts, crafts, etc. that are being produced locally and they have there own section at Jazz Fest and are being displayed in places like House of Blues etc. > This is interesting because I am in a hip hop class this semester. Early on I was ardently rooting for every single athlete in every competition! Unbelievable and amazing. Not that I know of. I believe the Recording Artists Coalition (RAC) recently formed-is the first of it's kind. Maybe you are thinking of ASCAP which started out as an advocacy group for composers and publishers. Hey Gary, I hitchhiked three hours from my hometown in Southern Ontario to see Joni in Stratford in '69, It was magical as always, especially the part where she gave me a daisy at the stage door after losing my pen while signing autographs. One of the other people backstage asked for a kiss (and got it). That wasn't you was it? Thanks for the Chuck Mitchell info.
