I believe this is a collection of UK library music but it reminded me of the pretty funky bass line played by a friend, Mo Foster, on the theme song for a British TV series called 'Minder' ('I Could Be So Good For You' by Dennis Waterman). And very coincidentally, Mo rang me up last week to ask if I knew about a great website he'd just discovered - the jmdl guitar database -and we had a laugh about my 'trainspottery' type voice as I went off on one. Having been a top UK session bass player for many years, Mo (who has recorded and toured with some amazing people including Jeff Beck, Joan Armadrading, Van Morrison, Nanci Griffith and many others) recently wrote a great book called "17 Watts? - The Birth of British Rock Guitar". Apparently the title of the book has been changed to "Play Like Elvis - How British Musicians Bought the American Dream" by his American publishers who thought that Americans wouldn't easily grasp the significance of "17 Watts". I found Mo's explanation on his website at http://www.mofoster.com > "Around 1960 my school band, The Tradewinds, > upgraded its back line of little 5 watt amplifiers with > the purchase of a wedge-shaped, blue and white, > 17 watt, 4-input, Watkins Dominator amplifier which, > at 38 pounds 10 shillings, we could just afford between > us. But the band was divided by the prospect of such > awesome power: did we really need 17 watts?". > Twenty years later Mo toured the United States with > Jeff Beck and a bass rig which, alone, was rated at > 1,500 watts! The book has loads of anecdotal material from people Mo has recorded or toured with including Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Joe Brown, Clem Cattini, Eric Clapton, Lonnie Donegan, Vic Flick, Herbie Flowers, Roger Clover, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Hank Marvin, Brian May, Gary Moore, Joe Moretti, Pino Palladino, Rick Parfitt, John Paul Jones, Francis Rossi, Gerry Rafferty, Mike Rutherford, Big Jim Sullivan, Andy Summers, Richard Thompson, Bert Weedon, Bruce Welch, and Muff Winwood. I know Joni has taken some brilliant shots in her time - I wish I could reach her to tell her about London Underground's current art photography programme - http://www.thetube.com/content/platformforart/ I think I've mentioned before that until I "gave up the day job" about 8 years ago, I worked at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden publishing posters and books from their archives - and, at the time, always thought how great it would be if one of Joni's paintings could be commissioned by the Underground (it certainly would have brightened up my journey to and from work each day!). London Transport has a long history of commissioning top artists of the day to design art posters for their underground station walls - the subway system is often described as 'the biggest art gallery in the world' as several million people use it every day) and they've often employed top North American artists, including the likes of Edward McKnight Kauffer and Man Ray in the 1930s and 40s, to try and brighten it up a bit and help passengers pass the time while waiting for a train. I would love to see some Joni snaps today - as I wend my weary way. I did find his old CD's at Amazon.com and think I may order some of them. I will also be on the look out for some at garage sales this Spring and Summer. ..Last night I went to a party of some friends called Copacabana Nights. We even had a dance instructor...who taught everyone the 'Swing'. I could not dance...not because my feet do not work...but because I have an injury in my right wrist and thumb from carrying my accordion wrong. It hurts like hell...and so ...no taking anyone's hand during a dance. It is a good thing I do most things left handed. I see a kinesiologist who specialises in injuries to accordion players. And my friend Shelly the therapeutic masseuse massages it at the coffee shop. :) I had planned to sand my floors this month...but I will not do that now. I am not playing the accordion for another few days. Another accordion friend told me to apply Arnica to the sore area. Any thoughts out there? I don't know that any schedule has been announced. Hopefully it will see the light of day this year. The record will consist of some of Joni's earlier songs, recorded with a full orchestra a la "Both Sides Now". Those of us who saw her on tour in 2000 got treated to (possibly) some of the new arrangements. As for the long-awaited tribute, I think that it may not ever appear. Recently, some JMDLers have enthusiastically pointed out how advanced my Alzheimer's has become when I've been confused about artists or titles, so maybe I am wrong about the title, and -- surprise! - I can't remember the author. But I know the book is by a writer who lived in Provincetown when it was published a couple of years ago, if that helps anyone remember what the title may be. The Joni reference in this book is about singing her songs at camp when the subject of the novel was a boy in the 1980s, I think.) _A Prayer for Owen Meany_, by John Irving _She's Come Undone_, by Wally Lamb _Speaking with the Angel_, edited by Nick Hornby _Who WIll Run the Frog Hospital?_, by Lorrie Moore Thanks, --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 03:05:14 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: joni in fiction - help me! some of you may have heard of a novel called ''hopscotch'' [original title: ''rayuela''] by argentine writer julio cortazar. in another novel, ''libro de manuel'' [''manuel's book''] cortazar not only mentions joni mitchell several times, but he also writes a whole poem dedicated to her. julio cortazar is quite a heavy weight in international literature, so this was a major tribute to joni. the novel is very hard to get, and i had to burn my copy when the military took over and searched houses to fond ''subversive'' literature [don quijote de la mancha, for example]. but if whoever finds the book, maybe in spain or mexico, that person will find a lost gem. i remember that the main character in ''libro de manuel'' was eagerly awaiting the release of a joni mitchell album in paris [because of dates and stuff, i assume it was ''blue'']. his left-wing comrades made lots of fun of him because he was a Marxist that loved ''american'' music. later in the book, the poem to joni mitchell begins ''joni mitchell, american baby...'' i thought you might like to know this bit of trivia. wallyK ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 01:11:36 EST From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: joni in film Bob Muller has done a superb job of compiling a list of Joni's music used in films. Thanks, Bob! But there are also Joni references that aren't specifically about her music playing on the soundtrack. For example, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks arguing about Joni in "You've Got Mail." Bob also e-mailed me about Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz in "Vanilla Sky," viewing Joni's art. Plus a shot of 'Blue' in Cameron's Crowe's "Almost Famous." So if you have any Joni sightings at your next movie -- Herself, her art, black crows, or whatever -- please let me know. I thought it would be interesting to study as part of pop culture. So I have some questions just for my own curiosity that deal with issues we are grappling with in discussion...I kind of already have opinions but want to see what anyone has to say... Is there really a hip hop culture? If so is it really so diverse? If not what culture is the basis for hip hop? Like my professor says.... You can try the justly titled REMINISCIN' IN TEMPO released by PBS that features alternate takes of Ellington's famous songs, like "Take the A Train". It also features the lovely "Come Sunday" with the great Mahalia Jackson. You could substitute tuba too. Except for Sharon,I have not heard her, but I know she plays with much feeling and will give it soul that is needed. Upon closer examination of the lyrics, the song was about a lazy day with thoughts ranging from food to missing someone, then: "... Joni Mitchell is on the radio.." This song reminds me so much of Suzanne Vega's "Tom Diner" where the character reminisced her lover while detailing all the movements of people around her: an objective correlative to her feelings. Haven't heard yet of Espen Lind but when I listened to all the songs in his latest, there's nothing to motivate me to buy it. Maybe except for that very brief Joni reference.
